So Im kind of tired of paying ins on my HEEP and not being able to drive it on the road. I wonder if there is a loop hole for getting an OHV decal for our junks. I know California does tag vehicles for OHV use only, however AZ does not, but its still a fairly new law.

As you can see below it states that it must have an UNLADEN weight of 1800lbs.. OK how about I chop and gut the $h!t out of it so it can meet that requirement.. and then later throw on a cage since all that steel is heavy.

The word UNLADEN means :

unladen

Welcome to EZ Off-Highway Vehicle Decal! Arizona Law requires all vehicles used off highway and meeting the criteria listed below to display an off-highway vehicle decal.

Criteria (All three requirements must be met.):

The vehicle is designed by the manufacturer primarily for travel over unimproved terrain.
The vehicle has an unladen weight of eighteen hundred pounds or less.
The vehicle has been issued an Arizona license plate.

Note: If you do not have a plate issued to this vehicle, please visit your nearest MVD Office or Authorized Third Party provider.
Off-highway vehicle decals are valid for one year. The decal is placed on the upper left hand corner of your license plate.

so what your saying is that we might be able to drive on the street without actually registering the vehicle? As long as we are under 1800lbs.?

1st off, GREAT IDEA!!!! But I dont think you could chop that much away from a XJ. I think the motor, Trannie, T-case and axles would be more than that. BUT HEY, CHOP IT UP, it would look sexy anyway!!!!!!

My question is: Does that mean that the quads we see on the road dont need insurance?

I do wish there was a recreational tag for those of us that dont drive it on pavement that much though, that would be SWEET.

Well req 1 and 3 are item that we for sure can prove. Im kind of stuck on this weight issue. I truhfully dont care if I have to chop, as we all know that this MONSTER is my trail rig.

Here is another question tho: Lets say we can find a way to drop that weight to get the tag, do they require yearly inspections with years to come? Cuz: what if I decide to slap on cage, like I plan too, or like others on here have Fw's down stairs... that will for sure be over 1800lbs. I dont know. Im thinking long term earnings here.

Trust me having this tag on my vehicle will make so much easier.

I do know we have some law enforcement in our chapter, maybe they can help out with this issue.

Bolt on stock tire to get it weighed. :D and empty the tank. pull out seats. you'll get under 1800

if you have a dd and you say to the ins people that you drive your xj less than 10000 miles a year then you can get recreational ins and its like 25 bucks a month or cheaper .

My gut feeling is that you'd get a ticket in an XJ with a copper sticker - since it's obviously over 1800 lbs with the cage and tires.

We all kinda got screwed by this sticker. 4wd vehicles got left out, and dirt bikes and quads now are required to have a current title before they can get that sticker. How many dirt bikes over a couple years old actually still have the titles with them? I know my two don't.

Get rid of the copper sticker program. Why rent what you already own?

"The vehicle is designed by the manufacturer primarily for travel over unimproved terrain."

Because the vehicle still has to be registered with the MVD (assigned a license plate), it has to have a VIN (from the factory or assigned via special construction). The VIN identifies the manufacturer and type of vehicle. No matter how you cut it, the XJ does not fall into the category listed above as it is identified by its factory VIN. :( If you can chop it up and have a VIN reassigned to it, I can see it then flying.

So the issue is not the qualifications for this tag, its the fact that it was assigned a VIN.

That is confusing tho.. cuz if you build a truggy, and take it in theyll give you a vin, same thing if you build a bike or a trailer. Doesnt that sound like a double standard?

Negative - they won't issue a VIN or plate unless that truggy is able to be licensed (issued a license plate) by meeting whatever requirements (mechanical, safety, smog, DOT, etc.) you are trying to register the vehicle under. Off-highway only vehicles have certain requirements. Motorcycles have certain requirements. Vehicles driven on the street have certain requirements... etc, etc.

The issue is not the VIN per se, it's what the vehicle was designed for. The best example I can think of are the guys that build hand made sand rails. They have certain requirements that they have to meet to have them pass the state inspection and be issued a plate and VIN.

In our case, we are taking a vehicle that has already been assigned a VIN and trying to use them for something different than what the original manufacturer intended.

all you need to do is go to the DMV with your plate. Hand it over and tell them you want to registure the vehicle as an OHV. They will give you a small RV plate for no charge.. You are now legal to drive on county roads (STL, BLM and Forest roads.. Easy Cheezy...

From Experience this is the easiest route..

Since you trailer your junk I wouldn't worry about street driving it..

http://www.azgfd.gov/outdoor_recreation/ohvFAQ.shtml#4

What is considered an off-highway vehicle for the purpose of obtaining the OHV Decal?

An off-highway vehicle is any motor vehicle operated on unimproved roads, trails and approved use areas not suitable for conventional two-wheel-drive vehicular travel. Examples include: ATVs, UTVs, trail motorcycles and dirt bikes. The requirement to purchase an OHV Decal only applies to OHVs meeting both of the following criteria:

Designed by the manufacturer primarily for travel over unimproved terrain.
Has an unladen weight of eighteen hundred pounds or less.

Pickup trucks, SUVs, cars and other recreational vehicles are not required (and will not be able) to obtain an OHV decal. All other regulations apply.

They need to change that to include 4 wheel drive vehicles that are solely built for off road use.
