Spoke to JD about 30 min ago or so. He's got a trans mount that has come completely apart and a ratchet strap isn't doing the job.

I'm loading up the trailer and I'll go snatch him up and bring him to the house so we can fix it up right.

Ok, well it wasn't the trans mount..........Thank God too, because JD's running the TNT belly/y-link set up and to change that out we'd still be pulling the suspension and crap...... As cool as that TNT set up is..... it sure makes trans work difficult.

Looks like his hack and tap is a bit worn out. The cut on the output shaft isn't straight so when it's bolted tight, it's put in a bit of a bind on the splines causing it to spin just a bit out of round. The double cardan on the XJ front shaft he's using had new u-joints, but the centering ball was worn out completely allowing the joint to move/vibrate pretty bad - bad enough to allow the t-case and exhaust to slap the floorboards as he was driving. Ate up one of the u-joint bearings/caps too. We didn't have the parts to fix it right.

He's on his way home in front wheel drive and a spare front shaft just in case his front craps out on him.

Let us know how the journey home went JD.

BTW - Hey 'Stang, apparently you were right where JD was broke down earlier today - he saw you at a tire shop off of Smoky Hill Rd east of E470. He was in the lot behind the On The Border restaurant. I'm fairly sure it musta been you as he described your XJ as lifted, OD green with a NAXJA and BOR sticker on the back......

This is why I pulled my transfer case out to do the H&T. First attempt with it in the rig was not pretty.

Good on ya Troy for helping him get on the road again.

X2 sure would have been easier in the long run. But that spicer adapter was toast I think that was the main problem. I'll be taking out the Tcase and recutting the output shaft just to be sure though.:shhh:

You do not need to pull the whole case to get the output shaft!! If you have room you can just split the case while it is still in the heep and the shaft just slides out.

True, but I didn't want to tear the case apart.
I disconnected the front and rear drive shafts and then ran the motor to spin the rear output while I cut it with my grinder and cutoff disc. I then used a 80 grit flapper to clean up the shaft.

I then pulled the t-case, marked the exact center of the shaft and used my drill press to XXXX a perfectly straight hole in the shaft. After tapping and installing the flange I stuffed it back under the heep and reconnected everything.

I really isn't that difficult or time consuming, and the H&T spins straight and true.
