Leather Steering Wheel re-wrap?

I have a 97 XJ with the leather steering wheel which is showing its age with a lot of cracking and some minor ripping. Has anyone ever had a shop re-wrap their steering whel with new leather? If so, is it the same quality as the original or is it not quite up to par? I know the cheap way is to buy a steering wheel cover and call it a day but I don't like how thick the wheel is when a cover is on it. Also if anyone has done this, how much did it cost?

It can be pretty pricey. To get an OEM quality rewrap you're looking at over $300. For our heeps, it's probably better to do a product similar to Wheelskins. You might also be able to score a used one in the junkyard in good shape. My steering wheel on my 2000 looks nearly new. I don't know why some of them fall apart while others seem to look great for years. I think it may depend on if you have sweaty palms or not! :)

Check ebay... I picked up replacement one for $45 that was in great shape. It even had the cruise control buttons. I plan on hooking up my garage door opener to one of the buttons.....

I have had good luck with wheelskins steering wheel covers on a bunch of different cars. They're stretched over the steering wheel using stitching which is pretty easy to do - just need to make sure that you really tighten the lacing well for the best look. People have been surprised it wasn't OEM
