You want a portable or one that stays in your car?
I was going to buy this one; NUVI 250 (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=13428), as it was at Best Buy for cheap, but wanted something more portable and to save money went with the LEGEND (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=30120).
Buy a garmin, best gps on the market and depending on how much disposable cash you want to throw at one will determine the features you have but the secret is the software.
Here is;
US TOPO MAPS & FOREST SERVICE MAPS (http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/cache/offonce/us/maps/onthetrailmaps;jsessionid=B1BED9A1449DCAE697DE120C C5205E81)
You can also download .gpx track files of 4 wheel drivetrails and load them on you gps.

i was surfing their site, and found software that will work on the NUVI series as well... which i think is sweet because of the nice big screen. i got a NUVI 255 on amazon for $115 shipped!
the only problem is the software is 100 bucks... cant decide wether its worth it?

it might be worthwhile finding out how many people have a garmin and split up the cost of the software (is that the right term ) if others have them i am up to going in on one

thats probably a good idea, i just wonder how they do the registration so people cannot 'cheat'

Just found this thread in a search.
I just sold my Nuvi 255 widescreen yesterday to a bud. From what i read it i couldnt use it for topo maps and tracking/route saving.
I figured i could buy the Nuvi 500 as it has topo capabilities i believe. But is not a widescreen version...yet. I have a feeling i'll miss the widescreen..
BTW: the 255W had every forest road i drove in it's software, if the road is on a Gazateer it's preloaded.
