Does anyone know what different automatic transmissions I can put in my 86xj with a 2.5? My trans is shot and to rebuild it is $650, but I have seen several used transmissions for less(and yes money is an issue).

auto or stick?

go to the JY. you can get one cheap! prolly round 100 dollars on half price day. Those T5s cost alot of money!

you can use a later model t5 but you need to keep your bellhousing from your transmission.

for Autos, TF904 and TF999 you can pick them up for cheap on craigslist. I gave the last one I had away..

The auto used OEM in the XJ behind the 2.8L V6 is a "special" version of the Baby 904/A904 three-speed - it's a Chrysler transmission with a GM bellhousing.

You can get better results if you swap it out entire for the THM700R4/4L60 from an S-series or a 4WD Astro/Safari (unless you're 2WD, then you can open that up to include F-body and 2WD S-10/S-15/Astro/Safari.) You'll likely need to have a new driveshaft made, but it should pay for itself with some highway use - you'll be picking up an overdrive gear.

Avoid the THM700R4 1987 and earlier - they're only fit for scrap aluminum and bronze. The later 4L60E (1995? on up) is electronically controlled, and will require that you bring the controller over with it (which isn't a bad idea if you can grab the entire powertrain, and get the 3.1L or 3.4L V6 with PFI.)

The transmission will mate neatly to the engine, but will require some fabrication to make the crossmember and transmission mount work. However, it's probably a worthwhile swap (the 3.1L/3.4L V6 will drop right in in place of the 2.8L, provided it's a RWD version. I've covered how to look for that elsewhere.)

How much work you want to put into this is up to you, but be advised that the GM/Chrysler Baby 904 is a fairly uncommon beastie... (The 904 is easy to find, but the GM bellhousing makes it difficult. I do not recall if the A904/Baby 904 has an integral or a bolt-on bellhousing - if it's bolt-in, that simplifies things for you considerably. It also shares internals with the rest of the A904s, and isn't that complex of a slushbox to overhaul on the bench.)

Sorry. Yes it is a 4wd and a 2.5 4cyl. I am looking for a trans that would be a direct swap no modifications. I am not even sure what trans is in it now, What do i look for to determine what trans is in it now?

Take a picture of the sump pan, we can tell from the outline. It's the standard method for ID'ing a slushbox...
