sounds like ive got some broken teeth on some gears in the front end. would it be easier to replace the front end or rebuild the axle while under the jeep?

Getting the gear mesh correct is kind of an art, like using blueing and looking at the contact pattern and checking and shimming for backlash, etc. IMHO, it would be easier and probably cheaper to find a replacement on craigslist.

Depends, cost for a complete rear gear replacement up in this area is around $500 if it needs a new carrier, if you do it yourself do you know how to set gears ? the full front end replacement, by yourself, figure an entire day. And hoping the one you got from a junk yard is good plus any parts you need to replace on the donor axle like U joints, ball joints, etc.
