View Full Version : Whats a blown 4.0 worth?

So a family member has a close to 94 jeep wrangler that had the engine die on it. Ive been looking into the possibility of buying the engine from him to use the block and head for a stroker project. I guess the engine died from oil starvation. Two questions... 1. Is a motor that died from lack of oil even worth anything, what usually goes out when theres no oil and can those things be remedied with normal rebuild methods? 2. What would you guys be willing to pay for the engine(minus bolt on stuff which I dont want anyway) including shortblock, pan and head, if you had to pull it yourself?
Thanks guys!

Ask yourself what the scrap price in in your area for an engine block, and go from there.
Oil starvation...
The cam is gone, no big deal, you would probably be buying another anyway for the stroker.
The crank is scored. If it is a standard diamater, you could have it ground .010" under size. It it is really beat, hopefully there is enough left if you have to grind it .030 under. Did it seize a main or rod bearing to the shaft and spin them in the journals? You don't know till you open it up. If it did and a main bearing spun in the journals, it will need to be align bored. Spun rod bearings are not as bad, just a rebuilt or new rod.
So many unknowns; as was said before, start with the scrap value for the engine block, unless you feel really lucky. If so, add 20 bucks to that price.

my u-pull-it charges something like $150 for a longblock. they have $75 engine weeks too. YMMV

You can't give away a running, worn out 4.0l out here. He should give you a six pack to take it.

He's planning on using the block for a stroker....who cares what the condition of the stock crank is?

I just give away bad motors. I actually have 2 renix 4.0's and one out of a 97 that are up for grabs if anyone wants them. Right now they are just yard oranaments at the farm and in my way.

So with me doing the labor, it sounds like you guys say I shouldnt be paying anything for this. Ill give it a shot, but thats going to be a hard one to convince him of.

What's the scrap price for the engine? Offer $10 more than scrap.
Personally, unless he can give you a 1000% promise that the block or head isn't cracked. I'd offer $20, and maybe throw in a case of beer (if he agrees to drink it with ya).

He can't sell it, no one will pay anything for it. He just needs to find someone to take it..........especially since you have to pull it. Of course, if you haven't run across what you need somewhere else, and it's worth it to you to give him a few bucks, that's up to you. Make him help you pull it. :)

not sure if your referencing the OP or my post. The motors I have are pulled and ready for new homes, or possibly as ditch filler in the near future.
To the OP, I will drop it off in your drive way, but that is it :D HAHA! Too bad this is not the year I can make it out west to wheel, we are heading east this year and south as well.

My neighbor has a 94 YJ that his kid took out one night and just about killed.....the HO came back with a real bad rod knock. I pulled a 91 XJ 4.0, pulled his 94 and swapped the front end pieces over to the 91 and dropped it in for him over a weekend. I kept his 94 long block, with all the bolt-ons, as payment (and he bought me a 12-pack). I'll be stripping it down and selling off all the extras, and build my stroker from it this summer.
For me, it was a fair trade-off.

Off the top of my head, I can think of at least 4 4.0's sitting around out of vehicles, within say 20 miles of my home. A couple of them only have about 50k on them, some are even original renix that still run good.
I couldn't see paying for one.

If i had a place to put it and you lived a few hundred miles closer Tyler i'd take that 97 motor off your hands!

The question is do you want to drive to MO to get that motor?

I didn't mean that specific one. But it's nice to know that in a decent sized market, you can find cheap or free 4.0's that are in good shape.
