Basic 242 Question

I searched posts for the NP242 and found out alot of info for it but there's one thing I don't understand.
The front driveshaft turns in 2wd. There is not a vacuum disconect on the front axle. So, how are the front wheels not getting drive in 2wd?

I probably just need more coffee but I don't see where the power stops.

Thanks for the response.
If it is disconnected inside the transfer case, why does the front driveshaft turn in 2wd?

Because the axle is turning which in turn rotates the front drive shaft and transfer case output yoke. The disconnect is inside of the T-case. Early models up to 90 or so without a 242 have a axle disconnect "CAD" but the NP231J also disconnects inside the T-case as well just like the 242.

I finally get it.
It's not turning from the transfer case to the wheels. It's the wheels turning which turns the front driveshaft.
Muchas gracias.
