I had a great time in Moab and environs this weekend, despite being a passenger the whole time. I keep bugging my buddy Adam to pay for a NAXJA membership since he seems to wheel with this club more than anybody else.
Thursday
On the way to Moab we drove up Snow Flats Road to visit Moonhouse Ruins per Von’s suggestion. Thanks for the advice, it was well worth it!
Moonhouse is a unique structure as it was built into an alcove with an additional outer wall protecting it.
Hiking down and across McCloyd Canyon to the ruins. Look carefully and you can see them tucked under the ledge partway up the opposite side:

http://www.fototime.com/F08961E86403D52/orig.jpg
The BLM has a fee tube set up at the road, $2 per person. For the price they supply an ammo can at the site with information about the ruin, as well as a notebook in which you can leave your thoughts or comments.

Behind the outer wall. The mud plaster, pictographs and other decorations were in great shape.

All of the interior doorways had signs asking people to not enter. They would have been a tight squeeze anyways, so we stayed out.

The stripe/dot pattern was repeated on the inner rooms:

We encountered the “old ones” while there. Several small groups of hikers came and went, they all seemed to be well past retirement age and wanted to chat. We bailed out on them as we had made plans to meet Ryan that afternoon.
The original plan was to meet Ryan and Clint at Arch Canyon on Thursday and run Arch Canyon/Hotel Rock on Friday. Jack warned us that Jeep Jamboree USA was going to do the same trails as us so we made a hasty change of plans in order to preserve the “wilderness” experience that these remote, seldom used trails provide. JJUSA was going to split up their group, with half spending the day on each trail on Friday and Saturday. We met Ryan in Comb Wash around 4pm Thursday. That left time to do a quick run up and down the Hotel Rock Trail without having to share it with anyone.

We got off the trail with enough daylight to setup camp in Comb Wash. TJ put in a request for a campfire. There was a fire pit and wood left by previous campers, which took the chill off our canyon bottom location.

It was small enough to still be able to enjoy the stars on this clear, moonless night.

Jeep Jamboree planned to leave the trailhead at 10am, with plans to finish around 5pm. We left at 8 in order to be able to avoid them on the trail. Our little group heading up Arch Canyon:

Clint rolled into camp sometime during the night. The early departure didn't give him much time to sleep in the meantime.

This is my favorite spot for photos in the entire canyon. We lined up the Jeeps for the usual shot but TJ stole the show!

We made excellent time, reaching the end of the trail by the time JJUSA was scheduled to be starting. BTW, according to the new travel plan put out by the Monticello office of the BLM, the trail was supposed to be closed shortly before the usual end during the summer to allow Mexican Spotted Owls a peaceful nesting location. We saw no gates or signs, so I am not sure where we should have stopped. We ended up driving to the end of the road and parked with the intention of spending a couple of hours hiking and exploring from there.

Adam and I hiked up to Cathedral Arch while the rest of the crew went up to Angel Arch.

Approaching Cathedral Arch. It is a lot bigger than it looks from the canyon bottom!

Looking through the arch, you can barely make out the Jeeps parked far below.
http://www.fototime.com/6365AF3DEAB9A82/orig.jpg
On the return trip we got an early warning of the approaching JJUSA group so we found a nice wide part of the road to pull off, out of their way. A few minutes later their 13 vehicles passed by us and we were on our way again.
http://www.fototime.com/58FD1BCB1A12EAF/orig.jpg
In our haste to get ahead of the Jamboree group we bypassed the large ruin at the canyon mouth on our morning trip in. On the way out we stopped to check it out:
http://www.fototime.com/84FD5B4EEA60FE3/orig.jpg
Ryan and Clint had plans to remain in the area while Adam and I had reservations at Canyonlands Campground that night so we parted ways.
Moab was getting geared up for the car show, which on Friday night took place on Main Street. Crowds were setting up for the evening on the sidewalks:
http://www.fototime.com/8ABB25FA1A47C89/orig.jpg
The slow, noisy parade went on all night, making sleep difficult.

Normally quiet Canyonlands Campground wasn't this weekend.

We slept in late then hooked up with Tom and Jack for a trip up Gold Bar Rim to the Golden Crack. The day started out nice but gradually became colder, windy and rainy at times. At City Market, we chatted with Steve before hitting the trail. Did you get any wheeling in?
Starting the trail with nice weather
http://www.fototime.com/644C364C1366034/orig.jpg
A couple of Tom’s friends joined us on this run, while Tom rode with Jack. So we also had a TJ:

…and another XJ.

Jack brought up the rear, with Tom navigating.

Tom also paid his way by spotting

We ate lunch and watched the show at Golden Crack, while thunder cracked overhead.

Under intermittent rain driven by a cold wind we began the return trip back to Gold Bar Rim. Jared, Kyle and Derrek caught up to us, swelling the group to 7 vehicles. This was probably the largest gathering of the weekend.

http://www.fototime.com/F5B41988D730094/orig.jpg
Due to the inclement weather and distinct lack of doors or windows, Derrek had to periodically take cover under ledges as the rain came and went.
On the way back we made a stop at the rim for photos

Well I finally followed Alex's advise and became a OFFICIAL Member  (Even though I drive a JK :dunno:)
I had a great time this trip. It was great to meet more people from here. Alex is always telling me the guys from here are "good people." So far he has proved that.
Looking forward to more trips with you guys.

Way to go Adam!
Mary, it is a steep hike down, across and up the canyon, with one big ledge to clamber over to get to the ruins. The Geriatric Hiking Club was out in full force that day and didin't seem to have any trouble with it though. The route was kind of hard to follow too, but I think I have a gps track from the hike I could send you.
I have many more photos in my albums here:

We did make it out wheeling.
We Hit Flat Iron Mesa on Saturday and had a great time on easter egg hill and the Intimidator. After moving camps to the north end of town with Ryan and Derek Sunday morning we all hit The Pickle and that was a lot of fun. I will get pictures up as soon as I can. Paul Broke his rear spider gears on the Pickle and Matt rolled his Jeep on Steel Bender. It was different from our other trips down there but still had a great time.

Loved the write up and pictures as always Alex. I suggested Moonhouse on purpose because I knew your pictures would do it justice! I would still like to visit the BIG set of ruins on the left side of Arch Canyon about 3/4 of the way to the end of the canyon.

It was good seeing you guys again, even if it was just for a day!
Yes, enjoyed it quite a bit, even if only a short visit. I like it when you are riding shotgun Alex, like having a personal photographer along for the trail :D Great writup, and I knew I'd be missing out on your S. Utah exploring.
And welcome to the club Adam!
The following is what we did before we ran in to you on Gold Bar. After that day we camped Saturday night off of Spring Canyon bottom Road and Sunday kept to Dirt experiencing a true test of navigational skills all the way in to Green River.
Kyle and I met up at a gas station in Draper about rush hour, He brought his young son along for his first wheeling trip. We grabbed a quick bite, solved the oil leak on my 4.0 in the parking lot:o, then hit the road just ahead of a storm front.
Arriving some time after dark near Klondike Bluffs we found the first suitable spur behind a low ridge with a camp site and simply camped inside our Jeeps. http://inlinethumb06.webshots.com/45445/2292242280043863621S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2292242280043863621gIPdPo)
Sunrise came early but having slept well I got out for a walk with the camera in tow. Cloudy but warm, the storm had stayed to the north!

not sure on this one, rose-heath maybe? it was in bloom all over though.

After the other two were up an at it, Kyles son showed me all of the small rocks lying about "ja-red-hey-look-,-rock-you", then we made for Moab and breakfast. Thinking it was later in the morning I was shocked it was only 8:30 when we sat down to eat. An hour and a half later we were at the park enjoying a car show already in full swing.

At the show I recieved a text from Alex, they were headed to the Gold Bar Rim trail, so we made for the Jeeps while browsing at a few last cars, then Kyle noticed he needed some shock bushings for a front left eye mount. After locating some and installing them in town, we made for the trail and on the way decided to get gas at Arch View Resort. Then we passed Ryan on the way who met us there and showed us where He, Derrek and Clint set up camp nearby. Derrek was about to leave for the show but wanted to wheel instead so the three of us made for Gold Bar to catch the other group.

I'm surprised I never never crossed any of your paths out on the trail based on some of the trails you ran.
On Saturday afternoon, we also ran Bull Canyon and then headed out to the Surprise Overlook of Day Canyon. We were hiking to Gemini Bridges when the rain first started in the area.
On Sunday morning we did 3D....but we got a really early start, so we were probably long gone by the time you guys made it to The Pickle

Great Pics Ryan. Now seeing a pic of that snake I am surprised we missed it.
On the way back I realized the Jeep wasn't running up to par. We put a vacuum bag on my air filter and after 3 days this is what it looked like. Should of taken it off when we left Moab to come home.

haha. When you suck a lot of air through that supercharger thats what happens. I notice that the air filter in my Dodge truck with that big old turbo does the same thing. It seems its always twice as dirty as my other vehicles in the same amount of miles driven and it never sees any off road use.

Ya it's Air Hungry! We were only getting 2psi on the way home, from 7-8 going.
I need to get more bags that helped out a lot, just need to take it off for the trip home.

Thanks Alex, coming from you that means a lot to me.
I love your style of photography: the environmental portrait. Up close and personal, candid photos of people doing what they enjoy, in beautiful places. I have always liked looking at that kind of photography the most, unfortunately it is something that I don't do well myself. Keep doing what you do so well and keep posting 'em!
Honestly my biggest complain is low light noise. Besides...a man can never have too many toys.

Funny thing about that. We get to Hotel Rock and what does Alex pull out?
"Hey Ryan, lets see if that camera of yours will fire a flash wirelessly"
It does... So now thats on my list of things to buy too.
It still doesn't help with campfire photos and such where you want the low light effect.

The video looks good! She prolly would have made it up sooner if it weren't for the extra 500 lbs of stuff on the roof. :D
Ryan, have you tried turning on "long exposure noise reduction" or "high ISO noise reduction" in your Nikon's custom menu? It may help out with your noise situation. Be aware that when long exposure nr is on it takes double the time for each exposure because the camera takes the photo, then with the shutter closed it reads an equal length exposure from the sensor and subtracts any hot pixels or other noise from the previous photo. It is a surprisingly effective system and is free!

Yep, it's on. It works well for super long exposures but where it lacks and where I wish I had more control is faster shutter speeds at high ISOs.
I get very little noise if I take a long exposure photo at anything below 640 ISO but at 800 its enough to bug me any anything higher than that is unacceptable.
