Anybody know what either of these go for in the junk yards ? I either want a 29 spline 8.25 or I was thinking of being cheap and since I cant afford to regear anytime soon, I was going to get a d35 from a 4 banger so I can at least get 4.10's... I want to run 31's or 32's and more desert than rocks... any help would be appreciated.

everybody says that , but my last jeep had a d35 and 31's and I womped the crap out of it for 3 years with no issue and I love to chirp 2nd in the rain ? the main thing is the cost... $500 for the rear for gears and labor or $200 for a d35 with 4.10 so it won't be a complete slug and carry a few extra alxes and maybe polish the turd a little.

If you want to toss in a D35 temporarily while you save money for a real axle setup, then do it. It will take 31's as long as you don't get in the rocks and stay oof the skinny pedal. Probably pick one up on here, or in the yard for $150ish.

I would hold out for someone upgrading their current setup, and take whatever they have, much better way to get an axle capable of 33's and already has gears, locker, etc.

In a couple years (when I decide to go to 37's) somebody will get a sweet deal on a 29 spline 8.25 with a detroit, 4.56 gears, Yukon axles and also get my D30 with 4.56, trutrac, and Yukon shafts as well.

Point being...If you can wait...theres always a good deal to be had.

Indeed, $300 got me a 29 spline 8.25 with 4.56 gears and a no-slip. I sold it a year and a half later for $300, after giving it a complete rebuild.

Seriously, Dont waste your time putting in another d35. It's just not worth your trouble..

my only other choice would be to keep the 8.25 I have and no gear unitl I save and that could be a while... my tranny already slips like mad with the 31's now... I figured it would be terrible with 32's or 33's and no gears.

dana 35 with 4.10s' ~$150
new driveshaft $40

4.10 gears $200
8.25 install it $65
install if you shop around $175

Yeah, its twice as much to do it right, but you won't be doing it again next year.

LIAR!! When I had Ryan go thru it had broken pins! But other than that....:D
I have a 8.25 here in my garage for free. I will even raise the shock mounts and trim the pumpkin...or is that the third member...or is it called a diff housing.... :D

It had broken pins? Wierd. It was rebuild maybe 3,000 miles before I took it off the jeep (due to pinion bearing failure). *shrug* ;) That's what the welder is for.

Cal, the best quote I got was $250 from my uncle and this is on the vehicle... is that good ? The problem is that it is the 27 spline 8.25 so then I still have to convert it to 29 splines it is true what they say J.E.E.P...... JUST... EMPTY...EVERY...POCKET

Thats $250 for labor, plus parts? Or 250 with parts and labor? Just to regear or a locker install as well?

You have to replace the carrier to go to 29 spline, so you should do that at the same time..

$250 is about average retail cost to regear (it gets alot more expensive) but most area's have a couple of jeepers with reasonable skill and tooling for a regear that do it cheaper. We have three or four here in OC/SD that take care of the club members inexpensivly.

That was just labor and no locker install.... I planned on becoming a member but money is running out fast. The plan started as converting to 4wd and the 4.5 super flex with leafs and 33's and gears.... Unfortunately when the money came so did the bills and now I get 3.5 with aal's and 32's if I can find a way to gear for cheap otherwise it will be a new set of 31's will an inch in tire really make that big of a difference. I have 31's now and it is not that bad I can still break them loose whenever I want but I do feel some slip not sure if that is do to the tranny going south or just from the tires. It is way better than my last jeep with the 5 speed... it did not like 31's and 5th gear very much

i say go 8.8 out of a Exploder with the limited slip, 4:10s, and rear discs for around $350 or so. damn near a bolt in too. But it is a couple inches skinnier so you got to run wheel spacers in the rear.

its about $175 per axle if you're in like flynn with a gear guy. I got mine done for $200 per axle (labor only).

at $500, you need to stop going to 4WP. :D

Seriously? I think its cheaper than that at the dealership. I can get it done for $100 per axle going to the "cheap" guy or $175 per axle going to the local race specialist .. who happens to be a naxja member and treat his friends right.

Talk to your local members. Someone will hook you up.

I tell you what to do, Pay me $400 per axle. I don't even do gear installs, but I could make at least $100 off that!!!!

I hope that at least one of the gearheads will PM you and give you better pricing.

$500 install is :looney:

Another note, IMHO, if you are having tranny issues, get that fixed before you think of re-gearing. The gears will do you no good if the tranny is :explosion

I hope you get a great deal on gears and get the tranny checked/fixed.

I think the ole tranny has a little life left in her.... it just leaks so I keep an eye on it a quart a week is all she asks. I am just going to have to save up and get her done right. As far as the slipping goes I have a brand new car that slips the same... so I just think it is an american car thing. I do believe it is time for a tps from what I have been reading. I hate the irs.... they need to send my money now : P

My tranny has been slipping when cold in the morning for nearly 18 months, its fine after a couple minutes and stays solid until its parked overnight again. It used to make me nervouse, so much that I picked up another aw4 and put it in the garage..

I don't even think about it anymore. I get in the jeep, and let it warm up in drive instead of in park. By the time my garage door closes and I have my seatbelt on I'm good to go. I wouldnt worry too much about it.
