I've got a 90 Cherokee Laredo with a 5sp manual, I believe it's the ax-15?. I just discovered a nasty leak, and tracked it down to the part of the transmission that bolts to the tranny mount. Apparently, the previous owner somehow put a crack right above the ears for the mounting bolts. My question is; What is the technical name for this portion of the tranny, and can it be replaced without dropping the entire gearbox? Thanks a lot all!

Sure looks like that is the housing. If it is, you may as well pick up a junkyard tranny.

Ask the welder if he can do it. If he says its better to pull it, then do it his way for the best quality job.
