View Full Version : MWC's Redbird Cleanup - Mark Your Calendars!

IllianaXJ
April 6th, 2009, 18:21
As most of of know, the MWC adopted Trail 21 at Redbird. Part of the adoption requires us to maintain the trail at least twice a year. Last year's cleanup resulted in a lot of work done clearing brush and reinforcing a loose bank. The DNR and Redbird Foundation sincerely appreciate all of the hard work put forth to make Redbird SRA the best park it can be.

This year's 1st cleanup will be Saturday May 30th.

The day's events will run as close to this as we can:

9AM meet inside the gate at the back shelter house.
10:00 -> lunch; cleanup on Trail 21.
Lunch -> 5PM; wheel whatever you want.
After 5 - gather at Wampler Lake CG for cookout/fire.

NOTE: Redbird is on EST.

Everyone that is going to attend and work on the trail will need to sign in at the gate as a volunteer. This will earn your free admission for the day. If you want to come and wheel, but not work the trail, you will need to pay the admission. There should be plenty of time after cleanup to wheel, so don't think it's going to be all work and no play.

Camping is available at both Shakamak State Park and Greene-Sullivan State Forest. GSSF is primitive only, but is traditionally where we hang out after a Redbird run. Shakamak has full hookups for those with mo-bile homes, but I recommend reservations.

For more information, please post here or PM me. If you plan on going, do the same.

Thanks!

This trail is the MWC responsability....not mama NAXJA....US!

The trail is signed with our chapter logo, it is up to all of us to maintian it.

Planning on making it this time.

Wussed out last time because all we had to wheel was the WJ, and rain + WJ + Redbird= a very nervous daniel. Now that his wife Amber is hooked on wheeling, it shouldn't be too hard to peer pressure him into showing up as well.

Now i wont be able to make it this year seeing as I will be in Souix Falls, S.D. Myself and a group of local guys will be heading out to Redbird the weekend before you all are scheduleing to go.

My question is can we do a little bit of help prior to you guys showing up? Like walking the trail and cleaning little bit just to make it easier for you all? And is cleaning up just consist of picking up of trash/debris on the trail? Or more involved than that? ----------> this guys never been on one of these "cleanup" events.

You can, sure, but unless you are officially there to clean up, you'll still have to pay the gate fee.

Cleanup consists of picking up trash, removing fallen trees/brush and general maintenance of the trail. In all reality it should only take us a couple hours to do the whole trail. Last year we did quite a bit of major trail work; this year should be pretty easy.

Being that this will be my first time at Redbird...

What is the situation for people with trailers? I know that they do not allow camping inside the park and I am planning on camping at GSSF. Is there a parking lot or similar inside Redbird where I can leave my truck and trailer or do I have to find alternate arrangements near by and drive my XJ there? About how far is GSSF from Redbird? I wouldn't mind leaving truck and trailer there and driving the XJ if it's only a few miles away (it's insured and plated, etc.)

Also, it's only a 3-hour drive but I would like to make a weekend out of it and hopefully leave Friday morning - anyone else heading there earlier than Saturday? If I camp at GSSF Friday night, can I leave a campsite set up or do I need to tear down Saturday morning and set up again Saturday evening?

Sorry for all the questions, but I hate not having a plan...

There is plenty of trailer parking space. You can pay at the drop box at the entrance for the number of nights you want to stay and leave camp set up all weekend. Last year it was 8 bucks a night not sure if the rate has changed. GSSF is only about 5 minutes away from Redbird. There is a cul-de-sac type area that is usually occupied by NAXJA when we go down so thats probably where everyone will stay.

The question is not will the Jeep make it. It is if the Tahoe will make it! :D

Thanks Aaron! If I can leave camp set up then I will probably just set up there on Friday and drive the XJ over to Redbird. I assume like many camping places it's pretty safe to leave your tent, etc. there during the day and people won't mess with it?

I can't wait to get out and do some wheeling! (after the trail cleanup, of course)

REMINDER

To get into Redbird your trail rig must have either current license plates or current OHV decal from either Indiana or your home state.

The plates from your tow rig will only work if the COs don't run the numbers. They can and have before.

Any questions please PM me.

GoSlowGetStuck
May 5th, 2009, 11:08
Excellent reminder, since private off-road parks generally don't required your rig to be plated. There is no way I would risk the plate-swapping routine, but to each their own.

Here is some other information about registering an ORV in Indiana:
http://www.offroad-ed.com/in/handbook/registration.htm

Here is the IN form for registering an ORV, but it sounds like they honor other states' registrations as well
http://www.in.gov/icpr/webfile/formsdiv/00390.pdf

IMO if your rig can pass for street legal, I would just insure/plate it. Nice to have the insurance just in case, and I think my registration/plates run about $20/yr for my XJ.

The trail clean-up, well not a NAXJA run, is a MWC event. You should be ready to pass tech, including insurance.

And is it OK to bring alcohol? Figured I'd make sure before I load anything up.

Also, I have a non-XJ friend who may bring his rig and tag along, any problem with that? He would be able to pass NAXJA tech.

Yeah there is a usual spot i believe you take your first left when you get in the campground and you will come up on a cul-de-sac that NAXJA usually takes over. Its fine if you bring alcohol but its not allowed in Redbird. I'm sure your buddy can come we might make fun of his rig if it gets stuck though. Even though i'm sure a few of us will end up stuck! :D I'd say just look for Rev's Silver Superduty and trailer sitting around. Trail maintenance was very constructive today and we got alot accomplished. The "death trees" were not cut down. We did find a suitable bypass to avoid them. We decided that it was in the best interest of the park if we left them be. We would like to place signs to mark the bypass. It's kind of obvious but signs would be good. There was a couple of trees (one of which was dead) that were removed to clear the bypass. It's still a pretty tight squeeze but much better then we found it. I know I picked up some trash here and there all day. I'm not sure how much we ended up picking up total.

As for the wheeling......not such a grand day. It wasn't near as sloppy as what we were expecting byt, I think everyone that attended broke something. We had another guy attempt to drive through a tree @ 15mph. Yeah, not pretty.......I have video.:D A Redbird trip would not be complete without broken glass. This time, it was Nissan flavored glass. Some form of body damage was had on all vehicles involved. Some worse than others. I have several pics/videos to upload sometime. not sure when I'll get to it.

Thanks to all that helped! It was good to see some others faces!

Have to say it was one of the better weekends this year so far for me. Glad to meet you all, enjoyed the work and wheelin'. Thanks to the guys with the turkey fryer, and to Rev for straightening out Josh?'s front end after the little (big) tree slam. Yeah, we all had a little damage, but it was all in good fun. Except the Nissan, I think he would say that wasn't too pleasant. ;) Thanks for a good time Ed

They made it about 5 miles down the road and his coolant light came on so they took brad's off the trailer and he drove it home.

Hey guys, keep in mind that our agreement with Indiana DNR requires us to do a clean up twice a year. We'll have our second clean up sometime toward the end of their season which is around Thanksgiving time. We've not got an exact date set yet, but keep it in mind!

Thanks again for a sucessful clean up day!

^^ What he said. Made Josh (XJosh95) drive my scary negative-caster XJ and I trailered his back up to his house near South Bend. It'll be a while before it's fully back, need to pull the head and change the head gasket, because coolant is definitely going places it shouldn't.

Jim (ILLXJ) had a fuel leak out of his gas door, AND a small fire in the hatch, within about 5 minutes of each other... could have turned out bad. That rock garden is brutal!

My Jeep was already pretty banged up and my LH taillight was busted, so I received little additional damage :) Had an absolute blast both on the trails and around the campfire, personally I'm glad that we "have" to do this cleanup twice a year! It won't take any arm twisting to get me out there in 6 months!

Well, guys. I'll tell you, that was the best fun I've ever had wrecking any one of my vehicles. The company we keep is outstanding. You guys are turning into extended family. I'm sad to confrim what Flexd and GoSlowGetStuck have already said. I didn't make it home under my own power. I however, do have one of the best friends I could ask for who was more than willing to trailer my Heep the extra 100 miles from his place to mine and drive the 100 miles back with an empty trailer.

I can't say thank you enough to Rev, Hale, IllXJ Jim and everyone else for their help, advice, compassion and all around great company. The fire side chats were sweet and I really enjoyed Rev's cigar he gave me.

I'll take some time and get her fixed so I can come on out again sometime, maybe even the fall clean-up. I look forward to seeing you all, and hopefully more, next time! :wave1:

Hale, that was a cool shirt, but it smoldering was pretty entertaining. My door dent was smooth enough to kick out, just a few scars. I am looking forward to the next clean-up too. I will gather all my forestry type stuff, and bring my 009 and plenty of chains. Man that was fun.
Josh, I figured that steam puffing was a head gasket, that thing was WAY too hot. Like it blew out the side... Glad you guys made it home safe, see ya next time. Ed

Neal says he's ready as soon as he fixes his window. I could use a new header panel but I might not get to that for a while. Either way give me a shout and we'll make a Badlands run, fixed or not. Hopefully Josh and I can make a couple junkyard runs in the next few months and get his rig fixed up. I'd like to make it back to Redbird soon as well, but maybe we'll skip trail 21 :D Unless we have a chainsaw!

Right on man! My buddy gets back from Iraq at the end of this month so he will be ready to go shortly after. Another buddy with an XJ and I think one of their buddys with an MJ will probably go too. I'll post up when we plan on going!

I do have a chainsaw! It could use some bar and chain lube and a sharpening, but it could work in fine style. I understand everyone's hesitance if you still say no. Anyway, I would be down with going with everyone to another run just without my rig. I don't care who I ride shotty with, but I'm down.

21 its not really to hard unless its slick. It is just tight we bypassed the trees of death and got most of our damage in that section.
