Who's in ???
post up!!
This year we are moving camp 1.5 miles east of the current camp spot. The new area will accomidate large RV's and trailer's as well as tent campers.. The area has much more shade and a larger open area for the group to stick together.. There are two ways to get to the new camp spot. From the Houston Mesa entrance you all know and love.. or Take 260 east to Control rd. (Tonto Village) Take control rd (FR64 north west) to FR198 (Pyeatte draw rd.) and make a left. Camp is apx 1.5 miles to the west on Pyeatte draw rd. (Fr198)
Here is the map

I still need a new rear brakeline(tore mine) need to pickup the new rear shaft and get the front shortened and put on the novak shifter but at least the alxes are mostly done fronts going in this weekend so I can mock up the steering. The rear is ready to go in except for the brakeline and Im getting the springs rewrapped at valley spring service oh yeah and I need to put a 1000 miles on my rig in the next month:confused1

I was up in the Payson area this past weekend and drove to the camp site.
I went in the back way off the control road and it was smoother than most of the Tucson roads I drive on every day.
Its EXACTLY 1.5 miles away from the control road and EASILY handled by even MY RV!!!!!!. There is a few skinny places but other than that, its all good. the drive into camp will probably need smoothing out with a shovel before long RV's like mine can make it in with tow rig attached but no big deal.
Although I am unsure if I am taking my RV due to electrical problems but for those that have them, this back way in is the BESTEST WAY EVER, and I will probably go that way even if I tow jeep behind Ford.
C ya there guys

Lata
I drove up today to check out the back way in from Tonto Village... other than a few blown over dead trees hanging across the road (need to be knocked down & cleared) to get a trailer or RV threw,The road is rutted out for about 3-4 hundred yards very doable, also the road is narrow I would suggest sending a pilot driver in first to warn on comming traffic..At the new camp site there was alot of campers some kind of annual event for them approx 20-25 campers... I decided to exit via Huston Mesa road... the road is at its best not rutted out at all the smoothest I have seen in many years & alot more wider.. I have choose to drag my camper trailer in from Huston Mesa road

Where were the blown over tree's at? The control road was smooth and I didnt think that the 1.5 miles in was that bad. unless things have changed in the past week which is possable. We didnt go back out through Housten Mesa though but its nice to hear that it has been graded and smoothed since it was getting pretty rough.
Things are still kinda up in the air on wether or not we will be there. I still have som eelec problems in RV and my gears are still not done yet in the rock jeep but hoiping to have that all wrapped up in a few days.

Trees are located on fr198
The blown over trees are not a big issue, they are dead trees approx 4-5inch in diameter.(firewood) Hopefully someone will take care of them prior to everyones arrival in two weeks but keep an eye out for them just in case the ruts in the road are a good 8-10 inches deep so if your dragging a trailer or an RV take it slow to prevent damage to any plumbing or holding tanks. Once again the entrance from Huston mesa road is the smothest I have ever seen the only issue would be oncomming traffic traveling at faster speeds I gave 2 dirt bikers & quad a good scare

Call Giant Gas station. There is a Giant on 260 and on 87 on the way either direction. Also give a call to Payson RV campgound (I think that's the name). They are just N of Giant on 260 on the opposite side of the road. Could also try the KOA south of town, don't remember the name.

Well, UPDATE!!! Archangel got my gears installed yesterday but when we went to start it for the test drive it wouldnt start. a fuel pump later and still no fuel pressure at the rail.
Brought it home last night and began working on it this morning. Changed the filter and rubber line and now have fuel pressure at rail and it started but runs like CRAP. misfireing and studdering and just overall NOT good.
I am thinking electrical since I also unplugged EVERYTHING and plugged it back in and also crimped on a new fitting onto the ground of the relay next to the battery.
So, I will continue to troubleshoot it but its not looking likely that I will make the payson run this year. I REFUSE to take a jeep that I KNOW has problems as it is NO FUN for me or the rest of the group.
Wish me luck

the light rig is a 65 L60 nissan patrol, one of 975 soft top patrols imported to this country, there was also 1,641 KL60 hardtops imported but we never got the long wb or the pickup, just like toyota they only imported a swb to this country to compete with the cj5 and the IH scout. but enough weird 4wd history for now,you can have plenty more if you come to payson

he had a similar problem a few years ago i never realy had a concrete answer as to the fix but when searching for the problem in my driveway on a trailer at midnight the day before we had to leave for payson. it just started running. my guess at the time was some shit built up in a connector i had disturbed while checking it out it.he has not had any issues since then.
i think it is just payson wheeling that makes his jalopy nervous and it craps out.:flame:

Brian, my rig was dying for no apparent reason. Just would not stay running. Without warning it would stop. But in addition to that, I was having trouble filling the fuel tank all the way. Turned out it was the Evap canister not letting fuel vent properly. Do either of those symptoms sound familiar?
Also it sounds like you turned it off, then it wouldn't start.....then DON'T TURN IT OFF. Payson is only like 4 days away. Shouldn't be too hard to keep her gassed up.:spin1:

More details on Hwy 87 Construction and lane closures. This is direct off of the Tonto NF website
PAYSON, Ariz. (29 April 2009)– The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will close the southbound lanes of State Route (SR) 87 near Sunflower and shift traffic to one lane in each direction in the northbound lanes from May 4 to May 20. The work will begin at 9 p.m. on Monday, May 4 with the closure of both southbound lanes of SR 87 at the junction of SR 188. Traffic will be routed through Globe until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5. At that time one lane in each direction will be opened to traffic in the northbound lanes. A wide-load restriction of 12-feet will be in place for both northbound and southbound vehicles.
This construction activity is part of phase two of the work to repair the highway and slope impacted by last year’s landslide near Slate Creek.
The traffic shift is needed to allow crews to remove concrete barriers and continue other construction work including installation of 12-foot wide drain pipes adjacent to the southbound lanes, and repairing pavement. Speeds will be temporarily reduced to 45 mph during the lane closure, which will last until May 20.
ADOT closed the highway on March 21, 2008 to ensure the safety of the traveling public following a landslide that occurred between Sunflower and Rye near Slate Creek. No one was injured, but the landslide caused sections of the highway’s southbound lanes to buckle and shift, creating an unsafe roadway. The highway was reopened March 27 with one lane in each direction, while construction crews continued making repairs. In May, ADOT opened all lanes of traffic after substantial erosion control and drainage measures were implemented.
Phase two of the SR 87 erosion control project began in early 2009 and includes the installation of a retaining wall on the west side of SR 87 and additional erosion-control measures on both sides of the highway.
ADOT appreciates drivers’ cooperation during this short-term inconvenience and asks motorists to drive safely in the construction zone and be alert for workers and heavy equipment. Motorists are advised to call 5-1-1 or visit www.az511.gov (http://www.az511.gov/) for the latest updates on highway conditions across Arizona.

Thanks to Rob and Justin for all the OVER DA PHONE assistance.
It appears that the no starting and when it does start the stuttering is in the wiring harness. After much troubleshooting I realized I am getting intermittent and non consistant voltage to the fuel injectors. ( Yes JJ, I found the power wire and voltage is all over the board when I get it )
I am not sure if I am going to attempt to fix this or just tear the jeep apart, take the good stuff and build the 2 door in the back yard which is a 91 HO and will get rid of the renix crap once and for all. I have always wanted a 2 door and a HO motor so I guess we will see what happens.

Everyone chipped in and I was glad to be part of a group who helps each other on the trail and off. Thanks for the great time and I hope to see everyone again soon. If not sooner I plan on attending the 10th ann trip if Dave O plans it again.

I can't believe how much fun I had considering how much carnage I endured. You have to have a strong stomach (and wallet) to enjoy this activity.
Total carnage:
Broken rear glass
Taco'd tie rod :wow:
Cut (brand new) Krawler tire
Snapped rear axle shaft
Broken driver's side mirror and housing :sad1:
Two broken rock lights :looser:
Anyway, like I said, I still had a blast. Thanks to Jaeger, Bear, Krakka-ass Krakka, Jeep-Pox and Superman for a hella fun Friday night. That night run was the ish.
Thanks to Dave, Pox, Leonard, Bear, Jaeger and Kraker for the help on the trail. I plan on returning to that trail and making it my b-yaatch. See you guys next time. Let's see some pics !

How was the drive down the hill with no doors, no windows, no windshield with someone else's jeep on your trailer? Does the cruise control work, at least? :wave1:

You forgot to mention the out of balance front tires and the 105 degree heat :flame:...
It was a fun ride for me, which apparently went unnoticed and unappreciated. I heard later on that he would have driven my jeep if I let him... Yea...RIGHT.
Hey Marshall, you forgot to mention the 27.00 bucks you gave my buddy Chris for towing your busted junk 100 miles home...That was awfully expensive for you considering all the other carnage you had over the weekend, but we gave the money to the waitress at the bar as a tip...we didn't want your (insult) money. And Marshall, if you're worried about carnage, maybe you should stick to the mall in Gilbert...
I will never tow anyone home again unless they are a close friend of mine...
That's all I am gonna say I am not going to ruin this thread anymore. Now, where's the rest of the pics! Dave, glad you rolled off the trail alright...Get that thing fixed and wheel it harder! Time for big axles!

pm sent. I tried to call you but the # I had for you is disconnected. If you have something to say like that about someone, you should speak to them like a man. Not air it out to make it everyone's business. That is pretty disgusting.
I can't count the times I thanked Chris. I told him that if you got sick of it I'd drive your Jeep for you, he said "James is fine". You are a weird dude, with some serious issues. Most people do nice things for people to be nice, not because they want credit or compensation.
I gave Chris every dollar I had in my pocket, do you want me to write you a check? I just rattled off all the crap that is broken on my rig, and because I forgot to mention you in a posting you blast me like that?

Well, I went out this morning and verified what I was fearing...I'm pretty sure I toasted the t-case in the YJ. I guess the 100 mile drive from Payette to Phoenix wasn't good for it when it was leaking fluid. I pulled the drain plug and I cannot feel any fluid. When the whole setup is put in neutral, I can hear a "scary" sound coming from inside the case... Could be fun to fix . Will have more details tomorrow when I pull the case out.
