Steady accessory/front-engine noise, directly related to RPM

Aside from my other 80's-diesel-Mercedes-noise I've posted elsewhere, as of yesterday I have a totally steady, RPM-related, linear, metal-on-metal sound coming from the front of the engine. It's just enough to be heard while driving, but is quite obvious when stopped/idling. Before I go tearing into this and shotgunning it on my one day off (on an army schedule :banghead:) can anyone jump in here and say "Yep, sounds like a waterpump" or "that's your timing chain"? I've got precious few seconds to make an unknown distance shot here; somebody range me.

Operating temp and oil pressure are totally fine; Jeep is 97 XJ 4.0L
. . . with 160k

Check your harmonic balancer and see if its digging into the timing chain cover.

I don't see any evidence of that, but I did palm the waterpump pulley and was able to wobble it. :looser:

Let's hope this is *the* problem and not *another* problem.
