so i have a MJ D44 that i'm putting under my xj, my ruff stuff perches and shock mounts just showed up now i just gotta order the 4.88s, but my question, do you think i will break lots of axles with a mini spool in a 44 with 4.88s and 33s and a auto? its a strickly offroad rig, and i don't get on the gas alot, opinions please thanks!
ps it has a lock rite up front too

Your good.

why waste money on spooling it when you can weld it. esp a mini spool

for 58 bucks shipped to my door..... plus i still have the option to EASILY switch back.... plus i don't have a welder easily accessable

Then what are you gonna do about the spring perches? JB Weld?:D

i was thinking hot glue for good penatration! haha i can get those welded! but i don't want to weld the spider gears because if i get an aussie later it will be a pain in the butt to get them out!

if your going to get a locker for your rear go full case locker.

Yea for $600+.
yeah but you get what you pay for in quality and strength. i personally wouldnt run a lunchbox locker in the rear of a vehicle that is on 33s or bigger. unless of course it is a mall crawler.

^....wrong. ill put my 80 dollar spool against any selectable locker in a strength comparison. no moving parts to break. simple, and the most bullet proof method of locking an axle period.

and i guess all my friends with lunchboxed locked rears on 38+inch tires are just mall crawlers

i guess so... every rig that i have ever dealt with that has an easy locker in the rear with big tires, goes through the pins, springs etc. all the damn time. you would be STUPID to waste $200+ on an easy locker if you are a trail only rig and run 33s or bigger. weld the SOB!

i would MUCH rather run a spool(if needed to update the carrier spread with gear change) or weld a rear axle then dump $500+ on a full cased locker. but as for road/wheeling manners. spend the extra doe and get a decent locker for your axle that will have a long and dependable life. whether it be a Detroit, or arb, or ox.

I ran a mini spool for several years in my rear D44 and absolutely loved it. It was a SoCal weekend rig with very little street time. When I got to Virginia and had to daily drive in big city traffic and it ate up the tires. Awesome on icy trails, predictable and easy to drive on on icy roads.

If its on the trail as much or more than its on the street go for the mini spool. If its the other way around dont do it because of the tire wear.

Below are some threads with my experience running a spooled rear. Mini spool in a D44. Loved it in the rocks, I loved on ice and snow trails (which surprised me), very stable, very predictable, far nicer than the autolocker I have now in icy conditions. I finally went to an Aussie when I started daily driving it because I couldnt afford the tire wear. If I didnt DD I would go back to the mini spool in a second. Road manners of the spool were excellent. Very smooth, no surprises. Very streatable, even better than the autolocker in my opinion because it doesn try to change lanes (like the aussie does) every time I get off or on the throttle.
