Tell me about it.....I did however find out i have a LOT of drain plugs in the floor they are metal with a silicone around it...i need to find a place to get rubber body plugs to put in their place.

i plan to remove the carpet in my 2000 xj to do a full floor covering like rhyno lining or that roll on stuff hurculiner, hopefully before i get into ur situation lol, i just really hope theres not an issue with wiring run along the floorboard that you'll have to loom and hide. your inside will look pretty sick once it's all covered and plugged with some rubber plugs... it will be alot easier to run a water hose inside to clean out the mud and soda spills!

Yep thats what I'm saying I know there are some wires in there to deal with but shouldn't be to bad half of them I put there when installing the stereo system lol Think I'm going to look for some kind of ruber or plastic to run them through. Going to have to do some looking around to see what is out there but sure can find something.

why not those black looms they use for the engine bay? then just black tape it like every 6 inches or so... keep it tidy, then if it were me i'd get those little loop things where they look like a P where you feed the wire thru it then screw it down to the cab to hold it in place think that would look decent, and sorta hidden.

I've gone the no carpet/herculiner route, here's some feedback.
It takes FOREVER for the smell to go away from that stuff. Plan on at least 3-4 good warm days for the stuff to dry and the smell to go away enough to even DRIVE it. Even then, it was weeks before it as "almost" gone. Any areas that get warm (above muffler) will start smelling again every time it gets hot.
There are a few wires under the carpet, but not too bad. I just re-routed them under the center console. There's one to the seatbelts, one for e-brake, more if you have power seats, etc. I also used Husky liners, they covered whatever wiring was left. What I ended up doing was scraping off as much of the herculiner as I could, just cut up a couple pieces of indoor/outdoor marine style carpet to put in the footwells, threw the husky liners over that, and called it good.

Put enough insolation down and that should solve that.
So PJ what did you end up going with after taking the carpet out?
bluejeepkid
March 29th, 2009, 20:17
just spray the liner right over the insulation?
BigDog
March 29th, 2009, 20:24
Yeah but your going to want to glue the insolation to stick it to the floor. Make sure there are no holes around the area and be sure to coat it good when spraying the liner you dont want any moisture getting in there and getting trapped that would cause a bad molding.

What i did for now is just pull the carpet off the floor and sanded what minimal rust i found and sprayed it with white spray paint (my jeep is white) and just threw the stock jeep floor mats in....works quite well and there was no noise difference but i can however hear a growling noise fron my dana 35...YAY! NOT.....

To make you feel better, I set up my 44 gears one morning (3am) and wheeled it later that...morning. When I laid the rig on it's side all the fluid drained into the tube and drum without my noticing. I drove half way home like that - until it seized the F up breaking my main shaft in the process. I went to fetch a trailer, came back and my back window was busted out. Couldn't get the SOB on the trailer, so I called a tow truck. Weeks later, I managed to break the 44 free enough to swap out bearings and gears, but not without a pry bar coercing it's way into my calf.
Moral of the story is it coulda been worse :)

Like John said above,
I did the Hurculiner thing also when I built the cage. I cleaned up the entire floor (front and rear) and put 2 full coats of Hurculiner on it (I got it at Joes and I don't think I paid more than $45 or so? $100 sounds pretty high to me). It took at least a week to dry and I don't believe I drove it for at least a month (mine doesn't get driven often anyway). I put the insulation and carpet all back in it once it was totally dry. For at least the next 4-6 run's it stank every time I drove it and I was begining to think it would never go away. It is totally fine now, but it was bad for a LONG while.
Other notes:
1. It is MUCH louder without the carpet and insulation, I prefer the carpet in.
2. There are already drain holes in these Jeep, you can use rubber or "boat" type bungs to use them regularly if you need do a search.
3. There is VERY little wiring under the carpet if you wanted to keep it out it wouldn't be diffiuclt to keep it all out of the way or under the center consul.
