So something told me that a full tank of gas should be getting me more than 250 miles from about 17 gallons of gas. ( mind you i have 31" tires ) If i do the math that means i get around 14 MPG's city and highway combined. Thats pretty awful. Then today i decided to see how off my milage is so i mapped out my route from my house to my sons school and it said it was approx 17.2 miles from home. I set my trip meter to 0 and drove to his school. When i got there my trip meter read 15.9 miles. So the difference here was 1.6 miles
How do i calculate my MPGS to reflect the difference? I usually fill up right around when the yellow " low fuel " light comes on and top off around 17-17.5 gallons of fuel. I would think that i would be getting at least 275-300 miles out of a full tank of gas. am i wrong? can someone help me figure this out? or should i fill up, drive till im empty and figure it out? :P
thanks again

Yes. Fill your tank, reset your trip odometer. Drive till empty or close to empty. Refill tank (I go till the pump stops). Divide miles by fuel used, that will give you MPG.
If you did not replace your speedo gear with the larger tires your odometer will be off by a percentage.
From a stock tire to a 31" tire it's about 10%. So to get your actual miles traveled multiply the odometer reading times 1.1. then divide by fuel used.

Yep. I'm on 31's and through a tank I can go 250 miles on GPS. That amounts to 224 on my odometer. I lose a mile every 10.

My odometer reads 250-275 from every fillup with 16 gallons of fuel. I have stock gearing and stock speedo gear 33" tires as well. I figure that my speedo is about 18% off so on mileage of 250 on the odometer I am actually driving 295/16 gallons of fuel = 18.5 MPG This is on the low side as far a mileage goes and sometimes I can go 275 on the same fillup.
Hope this helps.

You should fill up on 87 then calculate MPGs then 89 and 91 and do the same. Just to see the difference. =)
My last Jeep ran crappy on 91.

Odometer mileage is 15.9
Actual mileage is 17.2
17.2/15.9=1.082
Current MPG (250miles/17gllns=14.7mpg) X 1.082 = 15.91 actual mpg
City/Highway in a Jeep, that's probably not too bad.
A way that may be a bit more accurate to check the actual vs Jeep odometer is to get on a long stretch of interstate. Just as you pass a mile marker reset the Trip Meter. Drive 25 miles (or even more) based on the actual mile markers, then check the difference. Use the same formula as above.

Nobody gets decent mpg out of a Cherokee.
If you are getting 14, you are about average....

haha, guess i was pissed cause i figure i could get at least 300 miles to a full tank. i usually dont drive till its completely emptay cause i just dont think its a good idea. usually, like i mentioned before... ill fill up as soon as the light comes on or is constantly on. i notice that the gas reading fluxuates on accularationg and decelaration. how do i change the gear in the speedso? is it mechanical or electric?

It is mechanical and located on the transfer case.

Oversized tires, especially 33s on stock gearing, throw off your odometer & speedometer. You are going further and faster than what you might think.

Yeah, it's been said towards the top of this thread and in other threads. But, I joined this forum to be helpful where I could since that encourages people. So BlueJeepKid's post got a response that may help.

holy shit.... 2 pages... cool beans! i ran some 91 octane in it from about 1/4 of a tank so with 12 dollars i got about 5 gallons. It runs smooth b ut i dont want to fill her up just yet. I have done so in the past and avaraged 17-18 gallons when i fill up. Depending on wether or not i drive like a crazy person. You guys run 87 octane or higher?

How am I doubling your mileage ? You sed you are getting 14 MPG. I am getting 18 but my rig is maintained regularly and I dont drive with a led foot either.
I guess there are no mileage enhancement addatives in AZ like in CA. I guess that .12 per gallon tax that we have to pay migh just be a benefit.
