I am buying the front and rear axles out of my buddie's 98 XJ. The Jeep has been sitting for a couple years. The rear axle was OK, the brakes were shot though. The front axle had a passenger's side axle shaft seal leaking. I checked the fluid and there was none. What was in there, stuck to the plug, was thicker than chassis lube. The pinion is tight though and everything turns smoothly, without any noise though. It must have been a slow leak while it was still being driven because of all the dirt that was caked on with the oil around the passenger's side knuckle.

My question is, how much should I pay for these axles? He wants $85 a piece, but I think it is kind of high due to the fact I had to remove them myself and replace them with my old axles so it will still roll.

TIA for any and all opinions.

That's what I was thinking. I told him that they usually go for $75 - $100 a piece on here and he came up with $85. Halfway through pulling the front axle it occured to me, that's for an axle that is sitting in someones garage ready to be picked up. That's a lot of extra work for me to do all by myself. Thanks for the speedy reply!

axles at a yard are usually $100 and can be returned withing 30 days if something is wrong with them. So $50 for one without warranty and providing a core is not a stretch.

My first inclanation would be to say that your being ripped off and he should give you the axles with the work your doing, the fact that there is work to be done on them and your giving him your axles. My only question is what kind of axles are you giving him that he expects that price for them?

He's your friend, he should be just giving them to you anyways. If you need em, he doesn't, why charge your buddy for something when the buddy is doing all the work to get them?

That is a good point. He's one of those friends who always wants to make out on a deal, no matter who it is.

To answer the other question, the axles I am giving him are junk. One junk D35 with a loose, leaking pinion and noisy gears. The front D30 gears locked up and broke an axle shaft. Both axles were wore right out.

I gave him 2 12" subs in a professionally built box with a cheapo 2000 watt amp that I was asking $300 - $400 for. In return, he was going to let me take parts off his wrecked 98 XJ until we were even on the stereo equipment. That is the reason I didn't bother trying to talk him down at the time. It was after I had already agreed to the $85 an axle that I started thinking about it. I plan to stick by my original deal that I agreed to, I just had to bring it up to him about the bad deal I made, just to ease my own mind. Oh, and I will probably just tell him $400 for the stereo stuff, instead of the $300 I had planned on giving it to him for. Thanks for the feed back guys.
