Hello,

As a few of you have prolly noticed, when you add some bigger tires, and get a few feet higher in the air the stock 4.0L starts to lose some of its grunt.

I am looking for ways to get that grunt back, so I can keep up to all the toyota's ripping around the back roads up here.. and more importantly to keep the mud out of my tread when I get into the sticky stuff.

So the question is, whats the best way to go about it? I have heard of engine swaps, v6-v8, those kind of things. But lets face it.. we're Jeep people. I wanna keep the stock i6.

I have heard of people stroking the 4.0L to 4.6-5.0L. This is really interesting to me since I am wanting to dive into my engine bay and do a complete rebuild anyways. It has a few miles on er, but we all know they are bombproof if you take care of them.

I have also heard of people throwing in superchargers? Are there any links to these? And links for kits to stroke out the i6? Any help would be awesome.. I want to be able to throw my head back again when I find an open field.

Don't you still have 3.55s? Here's an idea: regear to 4.88 or lower. That will get your power back.

Yeah, I still have the stock gears.. I plan on getting new gears and axles eventually. However, there is nothing wrong with having a hot motor? Am I wrong?

Are they any good resources for guys who are interested in modding the engine?

this place is a great resource, but you have to use it... by searching.
all of those topics will yield a few threads to read up on, many having sites linked in them to more and more info

You don't need to (and shouldn't) go fast off road. I'll gladly let the toyotas etc. pass me so I can watch them tear their trucks apart while I still have a nice, intact vehicle. But you will feel much better with lower gears.

I love going fast off road. I live in CNY and all we have is mud with the occasional rock or two. Anybody that likes to play in mud knows that you need HP & TQ to allow the tires to self-clean. Besides having 4 corners blowin rooster tails it's pretty fun. I've also had my XJ in 4LO as fast as 35-40mph with NO problems. Just make sure your motors mounts and tranny mount is in OK shape before romping on it as you WILL find the weakest link in the powertrain. BTW, what about these Yota's you speak of...what are these guys running that's got you left in their dust?

Well.. here in Alberta, there is a lot of washout roads people like to rip down in a hurry. Not many rocks to play on, that and mud.

My 4.6L didn't shine at all until I put the 4.56s in. Gears made a bigger difference than the motor thats for sure. It makes a pretty nasty combo together though :). I really wish I had gone 4.88s but I got my front gears for free so I couldn't bitch.
