If it was over filled what would most likely happen?

overfilling will lead to the oil foaming most likely.
takes about 1.5 quarts to fill mine. Just fill it till it's even with the hole. That works unless you've repositioned it drastically.

My reasoning is I had a shop doing some work on it and they took it upon themselves to change the gear oil, well they cahrged me for 3 qaurts and after driving home and letting it sit over night about half a quart or so has leaked out the passengers side tube. It never leaked before, I'm afraid the seal is now blown.

it takes 2.5 pints. i dont think you can fit 3 quarts in it if you tried.
