Nice place.. Since your going to be around the Quepos, Manuel Antonio area.. Go check out Playa Hermosa, nice black sandy beaches and decent surf.. You will have a great time.. I personally love Rica.. My wife and I are heading down there the 25th of this month for two weeks of bliss... Purda Vida...

The wife and I spent several weeks in Costa Rica a couple of years ago.
It was one of our better vacations.
The people were very friendly and we felt safe just wandering around by ourselves. San Jose was the only place I did not feel comfortable to be on the streets at night.
English is widely spoken by anyone under 30 since it is taught in the schools. The people are proud of their country and should be. It is unlike any other place in Central America.
I suggest using guides when exploring the jungles and rain forest. They will show you things you would never notice. Take a good pair of binoculars or a spotting scope.
A camera with a big telephoto lens would be nice too.
We found the food to be good with a lot of wonderful fruits and vegetables. I especially like eating at the small roadside places where we could meet the locals. The chicken and rice plates were cheap and tasty.

There are more places to visit than you could see in a year.
The most unique place we visited was the jungle camp in Tortuguero. It was hot, humid and loaded with a huge variety of birds and animals. We keep saying it was like the jungle ride at Disneyland except everything was real.

One evening, we were sitting on our patio, next to the Arenal volcano, and watched huge red-hot boulders being blown out of the volcano and rolling down the mountainside. Amazing.

We also liked the Monteverde rain forest preserve for the bird varieties and the cooler weather. Did I say it gets HOT in Costa Rica? We found the beaches to be too hot for comfort and the water is very warm, similar to Miami in the summer. The tropical sun can be brutal.

While in Manuel Antonio, be sure to visit the National Park and take a tour of the mangrove swamps. Get out early to avoid some of the heat.
I see you are staying at a place with A/C, good move.

In CR, I found the vehicle I want, a Toyota Hilux 4X4 diesel pickup. Too bad this small pickup is not imported here. It would make a good replacement for the XJ when it wears out.

Tabacor hot springs resort is very cool as is the cloud forest. If you head a little north, look up Vista Del Golfo for Zip lining, If you make it to the Tamarindo area you gotta go to Lola's in Avellanas, Playa Negro for surf and eat at Maria Bonitas in Langosta.

Arenal and Poaz volcanoes. EspeciallyArenal, it has vocanic hotsprings. Avoid the Atlantic coast, Nicoya peninsula. My family's from there, wish I had been raised there, frikin beutiful. Beutiful, old fasioned traditional girls. Also the typical tourists tours will show you alot.

I went to Costa Rica a couple years ago. Absolutely awesome place. I'd suggest doing a zip line tour through the rain forest. My most memorable experience was eating termites which are surprisingly good. As mentioned, hot springs are also very cool.
