Quick Question-

If I have an '01 XJ with an 231 T Case, (now broke) - can I replace it with a 242 from an 87 cherokee? Will it require any sort of adapter or anything?

The only reason I want to do this is because, like i said, mine broke and this one already has an SYE on it.

Please let me know - Thanks!

The Input shaft spline count changed from 21 to 23 spline (I am not 100% sure of hte date, So use search to verify) in 1996, so the 87 TC will not directly work, But you may be able to swap the Shaft from your 231 into it if the shaft is still in good condition.
