View Full Version : What's in the back of your Jeep?

First off, I know this isn't really tech but I dunno where to put it.

So what tools and accessories do you have in your Jeep? So far I only have...
Jumper cables
Rope
Mechanix Gloves
Tire Tool
Factory Jack and Spare tire
And a tool box with wrenches, screwdrivers, ect.

I plan to get more tools, a spot light, good tow strap, come alongs, maybe a hand saw and some other things.

What do you have?

Day-to-day driving, I don't have anything; don't want to carry the weight.

When I'm going on a longer road-trip, or a wheeling-trip, I bring a toolbox and a socket set. In the toolbox, I've got a full set of basic screwdrivers and wrenches as well as stuff like a gear puller and brake tools. I also have a big box of spare fluids; I've got bottles of every fluid in the Jeep, as well as RTV and a grease gun. I usually toss a tow strap in the back as well, especially in the winter. A spare tire, obviously. Some ratchet straps, and a jack (usually the stock bottle jack, unless there's a good reason to bring the nice floor jack). I don't bring the spare parts like a steering linkage and axleshafts unless I'm going wheeling.

I keep some tools under the rear seat, including a little shovel and a folding saw, but I usually have too many tools in back too. Organization, such as it is: Fire extinguisher attached to panel on right side, below it, in the little recess, is first aid kit. A tool box is usually somewhere rolling around, strap is tucked inside the spare tire, and a few other necessities in some sort of purse/messenger bag with lots of pockets, which hangs on the spare tire.

An assortment of fluids in a milk crate (engine oil, atf, brake, ps, 90w PBblaster, brake cleaner, ether, a small plastic tub of wheel bearing grease, and a small tube of antiseize) a four way lugwrench sort of fits in one side of the crate.
a canvas duffle with a recovery strap, a few shackles, a tree saver I made outo a recovery strap i found with a cut in it, about 100 ft of 5/16 spectra with my spare fid, some other rigging type odds and ends, and a set of jumper cables. in the bag's small compartment i have a tyvek marshmallow man suit and pair of carhaart pants and a matching hoodie. i keep a pair of dry socks in a ziploc bag in the glove box. (causing my children to claim that we have no glovebox just a sockbox)

hi lift laying down crossways.

two 2ton jackstands nested and ziptied so they don't rattle.... much

a tackle box with a dmm, an assortment of crimp style elec fittings with matching crimper, a handful of scotchloks in a few sizes. a handful of these elec splice things that look like a sta-lok fitting but whose brand name i can't remember, a couple spools of fine stranded, tinned wire in 14 and 10 ga., a small nyon bag with cotter pins and hitch pins, a vaccum pump in a HEAVY ziploc thing designed for hiking maps, with brake bleed kit in separate ziploc thingie, the electrical parts go in the section for lures and the rest in the bottom.

a spare axle assy for front 30 each side w/one spare hub.

with these things strapped in to place I still have room for about three bags of groceries.

under the rear seat on the driver side i keep a carefully picked through and supplemented set of ratchets and wrenches(should really write down what is in there it took years of sorting and adding to get it just right.) in a riggers bag. under the passenger side i keep a small hydraulic bottle jack, a three lb drilling hammer, some punches and chisels. each side has a square of pressure treated plywood for under the jacks or jack stands.

I don't always carry the axles/hub but they are there now because i am too lazy to put them back in the garage.

Unless I go out wheeling I keep little to nothing in the back of my jeep. Most of the time I don't even have a spare tire and jack back there. Right now I have a pair of gloves a jacket and a hammer with zip ties that's it. I don't live far from work so if I do get a flat I can call a few friends or the GF to bring me the tire and jack. It only takes 20 min to get home so if I get a flat like I said no big deal.

Now if I'm out wheeling thats a whole different game right there and I pack alot of tools spare parts recovery items and the works.

Well, like I said... I don't wheel... and I have another (newer, high MPG) car that does all the long road trips. So the Jeep's always on-road, and almost never outside of the AAA-plus 100-mile radius from the tools!

Between under the seat, behind the spare, and in the odd shaped compartment on the right (I built an elastic net so it is now usefull) I have of course the bottle jack and tire iron, cross style lug wrench, cigaret lighter aircompressor, few rags, bungie cords, 2 wratcheting tie downs, tow strap, ball adapter with 2in and 1 7/8in balls, fluids, small tool kit (probably more extensive than it should be), set of work clothes, pair of sandals, 13 LED flash light, can of fix-a-flat, jumper cables, blanket, and a jacket. I will probably never have a chance to use half this stuff. But Be Prepared from Boy Scouts kind of stuck with me.

I learned shortly into this XJ foray never to leave your tools at home. It's a recipe for disaster! So far, in the 6 months I've had this XJ, I've changed an alternator, u-joint, 3 tires, upper radiator hose, and 3 starter buttons, on the side of the road. I tend to drive a lot so it would be stupid not to take some tools with me. I also work on friends' cars and bikes on the side for some extra cash, so this way i don't have to load them up every time.

About a thousand pounds of Cisco and IBM gear is what finally did my stock leaf springs in... I bottomed out on every pothole from Worcester to Boston. I had no bumpstops left when I got there.

Right now... hmm. Junkyard bag (full toolset, weighs 57lbs), 2.5L 4cyl engine, exhaust tubing, AX-4 or AX-5, chainsaw, 3 gallons of 2 stroke gas, 20 feet of poop pipe, 100 feet of rope, a set of WJ LCAs, 3 hockey sticks, an angle grinder, two 8.25 drum brake backing plates fully loaded, a few driveshafts, a few axle shafts, 3 quarts of diff lube, 5 quarts ATF, 3 quarts 10w30, a set of wheelbarrow wheels, ~20 feet of assorted 1/8" steel stock, a couple quarts of brake fluid, a spare tire, ten pounds of fluxcore wire, about 60 4.5" cutoff wheels, and a 3 foot crowbar.

And it's not even fully loaded... I love daily driving an MJ.
