rear hatch lock??

I fell stupid asking this but how do you lock the back hatch. Is there a trick to it. I turn the key and it doesn't lock.

If it doesn't lock, the mechanism is messed up, stuck, needs cleaning or whatnot. Access by removing inside panel. Teamcherokee.com is one source for replacements if it turns out you need one.

If you don't have a cargo dome light and want one, now is the time to replace the old latch with one with the integral switch.

Just a crazy question but you did try turning the key both directions right? One way unlocks and the other way locks. If you did try that then it might just be a small actuating bar inside that's come loose.
