As some of you know, I own four Cherokees.
My krawler rig, my son's prerunner and two other project rigs.
I promised my son I'd get to his build as soon as I finished up some
detail work on my rig.
Well, I got that done today...
Here is the starting point.

I have a few goals to reach with this one.
First, I need to get this done without spending a bundle of cash. The budget will be less than 1k.
Since I already have the vast majority of the parts I need, and I won't have to pay others to do the fab work, I think is it very realistic sum.

There are a few basic repairs that need to be done too.
A stud on the exhaust manifold broke, so there is a substantial leak there, and of course it is the stud located nearest the driving compartment (is that #1 or #6?) The entire exhaust system will be either rebuilt or replaced. It's kinda' thrashed.
The seats are out of a four door and will need to be replaced.
The doors will need some help also.
His air bag deployed while he was parked drinking an ice tea (that is his story ;) ) so that will need to be replaced.
The rear hatch needs some attention, either it is loose or the frame is flexing badly.
I have four months to complete it.
Lets see how far I can get in that time frame.
Oh yeah, it will also get a new coat of paint.

Aside from repairs what else do you plan to do?
Cage?
Armour?
Gears?
Lockers?
Looks like a good platform to start from!

Maybe a rear locker, but I don't think so.
A cage? Most definitely. My son said he didn't need one. My logic is, that if we build a rig capable of flat out gettin' it, we better have a cage.
Although it will have rock rails, they will be there more as a mounting point for the cage than for protection....

Rick i was looking at the wifes saturn vue today, i see that the front seat passanger side fold's flat.. I know there are few that do this, so you could have him look around the J/Y for some he likes.. HTH

Had the same stud break on me. I had to pull the head, drill it out and tap it for a new stud. It was a big PITA.

I'm thinking about pulling the engine to do it.....

Rick, I'm looking forward to seeing this build. And a cage is definitely a good idea, especially being a 2 door, they're known for flexing more.

hmm I thought 2 doors were stiffer. something about having body instead of a non-structural door makes sense to me

Everything I've heard says the 4 door is more structurally sound, and the two doors fold like tacos. I may be wrong... but probably not... it doesn't happen very often ;) :D

Funny you should say that.
My Son was telling me about how he was flying through an old test track of mine, I asked him to show me how fast he was going. After a lap I told him to switch seats with me.
He just about shit his pants with how much faster I could get his Jeep to move. I am an old desert racer....
Once I get back from the KOH the rig starts getting torn down.
I am sooooo looking forward to building a street Jeepspeed rig.

I have been able to drill and tap this bolt with the engine and head in place, so it can be done but it is a PITA.....SANTA

Okay, some updates, but nothing has been done to make it Jeepspeed worthy yet. I'm thinkin' it might be best to get it running and drivable first!
Although no pictures yet.
Got the engine done. Pulled the head and did the work. I know Ken has done it without pulling the damn thing, but I didn't have anything that would work on it. Cal was over and we torqued it down while some work was being done on some other rigs.
Took the seats entirely apart and rewelded the frames. Although they turned out fine, running a two door while using four door seats sucks. Nobody can get into the back seat!
We took it up to Big Bear for the SoCal Fest over the weekend. I found a few other problems that need to be addressed before getting too far into any build.
First, the front 30 is worn out. I'm hoping its just the ball joints, but it wondered pretty badly while driving on pavement.
Second there is some serious drive line vibration.
I have a couple of extra HP 30's sitting around that will get drug onto the rebuild rack tonight. When I tear into it I'll take pictures and show what gets done to it. Although the desire is to build a go fast rig, I want to keep ground clearance in mind, so the truss will be located on top of the axle.
I put the rig up on the rack today to find the vibration(s)....
It looks like the right rear wheel is bent enough to notice, but that wasn't the bigger problem, a bent output shaft on the transfer case was far worse!
Soooo......I put a WTB thread in the SoCal chapter for seats and an output shaft. If I can't find a spare shaft (its a '96 BTW) I'll get a SYE kit from AA and go that route.
Let me get it a bit tighter, then I'll get into the project of making it a go fast rig.
