I spoke to my local hardware store here in PA. They made it sound as though the metal "Blitz" cans were Iffy with today's restrictions etc...
They found one they would order for me but it was around $45. So...
I have priced around for a little while to see about something along the same lines. The jerry cans were looking pricey even for used ones. Did a search online and came across the POLY Moeller Scepter ECO jerry can. True Value hardware stores can order these.
Their number is SKU: 579513
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41f5ENSsaqL._SL500_AA280_.jpg
Cost for me was $22 which is about half what the Blitz cans were.
Just thought I'd post this up. :rof: The plan is to make a mount for my swing out.

I hate to tell you, but Federal DOT prohibits motor fuel from being transported in any plastic can. They all must be metal "safety" cans. Now you probably do not fall under the Fed CMV code, but it is a good guide line to follow.

Good to know. Honestly, my local hardware / supply store was making it sound like they were "not supposed" to get metal Blitz cans in due to newer PA laws restricting them... I will have to check with local law enforcement.
Thanks

I'm not a real fan of the blitz cans, I have a few, they seal like crap and the donkey dicks leak like a sieve, they always have, I used to use them alot to top off our quarter tons on convoys where the onboard gas tank was a bit shy of getting to the next fueling and rest area for the tanker trucks. We would carry 5 or 6 in the trailer when we left home station and drove to one of the ranges/bases where we provided observer support and had no fuel support or tanker stops. They tend to leak less if you only fill them to the top of the belt line or seam at the top of the can. Last year when I worked in Manhattan I'd take 5 or 6 of them to NJ with me on sunday night and fill them up on friday when I was headed home, took advantage of the .75 to 1.00 price difference between there and the poconos then I would fill up the other jeeps at the house. One of the parts stores mismarked them a few years ago and I picked them up for $11 each :D :D :D

The NATO (metal) cans work well, much better than the old screw cap type. But there is a new model out (kid proof cap) that I've never tried.
I have a bunch of plastic 20 liter cans that I use for fuel, my guess is they were originally for industrial solvents. Double thick plastic, almost thick enough to stand on and not crush.
I've since picked up battery acid. bulk containers. Best guess is they are 40 liters and also really sturdy. Washed them out with a steam Jenny and am using them for old oil now. They seem built to really take a beating and retain integrity. The size is about right, full, one man can marginally handle one without some assistance. You'd need a transfer pump to fill your tank, if you used one for fuel transport.
As far as I can figure out, approved for hazardous liquid transport, red and a child poof cap are the only stipulations for the new regulations.

ok now youre showing your age... heh. I would rather not make a round can mount. Dont think I've ever seen anyone with one of them mounted on their jeep. Like I said, I'm getting one of these poly cans. I'll show / ask the state police & let ya know what they say.
I think it'll be fine, this is what got me looking to begin with. Its a Police trailer. Its the same Scepter brand Poly Jerry cans. (By the way this sold for $530 bucks on ebay yesterday)

Nice Police trailer! I'd like one!
Great deal when you consider just the two cans would set you back just under $200 :wow:
Good luck on getting the Scepter cans, very hard to get stateside...
There is one guy who is selling them on e-bay and some of the other forums. He wants big$$$ for them, $79 +$14 shipping.
Kinda hard to swallow when just across the border in Canada they can be had for $28.35 per can...

Hammered, those Sceptor cans are no longer being imported to the US thanks to CARB compliancy issues. They are the current Military issued cans as well. You'll need to buy stock already here in the states, although they have almost doubled in price.
I'm looking for a few OD fuel and water cans myself.

Those are the ones mentioned above, same seller.
Search out Wedco as well.
From what i have read elsewhere you may be able to get a few pre CARB cans here. He had a few left.

The scepter type water cans are fairly common here (the fuel type less so) and can be used for fuel. Beware of cheap copies. The only real problem with the plastic containers is rub throughs. I've had mine get fairly thin in spots and have learned to pad certain areas, especially when using the metal type military mounts.
The new Carb regulations are likely for newly fabricated containers and not applicable to the older ones (hopefully).

The biggest problems with the screw type metal cans (Jerry cans or blitz cans?) is heat. Especially inside a vehicle, things are going to expand and they will vent if they get hot enough. Fuel can also melt your carpet and make a heck of a mess (and smell), the voice of experience speaking.
If you overtighten the screw cap, the gasket can migrate and the gasket is prone to cracking when very old.
The only time I ever carry extra fuel is internally (rarely), never externally and preferably in my trailer.
I have a mental picture of a rear end collision and a 15 foot circle of fuel spew.

well it wont carry fuel on a day to day basis, just when i go on trail trips. hopefully i can buy new gaskets for the cap to keep things from leaking or smelling up my cherokee in the future... maybe i'll lube it up with a thin coat of oil to keep it in good condition.

If the gasket gets wet with fuel and the cap is overtightened, the gasket can squeeze out from underneath the cap, I imagine oil may cause the same thing.

The only thing I hate about jerry cans is having them piss all over my shoes no matter what type of filler i use. If anyone is interested my brother is making a filler that threads into the can and uses an o-ring to seal at the can. It is leak proof.

Over here they keep trying to sell the Carb type containers and then end up doing another production run of the NATO fuel cans. Everybody seems to want the NATO metal fuel cans.

I have some of the 5 gal metal "german" fuel cans that I picked up at my local army surplus store. I like them a lot better than the american ones with the HUGE hole in the top. It uses a metal tube that you connect to it, but the opening is skinny enough that you can actually pour fuel out of it without it, unlike the american ones.

ok, update, i got to use my blitz can for the first time today just to empty it cuz i only had a half tank in my honda... anyway i screwed the cap on to which i thought was really tight... and whats the first thing it did... leaked all over my hand, so i got something plastic to hammer on it and turned it some more, that fized the problem for the most part as long as i didnt tilt it to much... i used that little funny thing for on road vehicles... yeah dont use that, it spills gas all over the side of your car, im kinda pissed at how well it performed, but once i can get a jerry can holder for the back of my cherokee with the spare tire carrier bumper setup i dont think i'll be so angry... i emptyed the can cuz i wasnt sure how long i wanted to leave the gas in that can cuz i know it would break down and not work as well, also, upon opening the can it aired out like a soda can spilling a little down the side, so if i had to do this all over again i think i'd go with the plastic square ones like i often used for my quads back when i used to ride, oh well trial and error i guess, so much for thinking these were good cans =/

I like the NATO fuel cans. Get a shaker siphon to do the fuel transfer. The can rests nicely on the left taillight.

Another vote for the shaker siphon. Let your Jeep fill itself up and don't spill a drop.
BTW, I carry those NATO cans inside my Cherokee and have never smelled gas, ever. Even in 100+ degree heat, even at altitudes of up to 12,000 feet.

i like that idea =) i used to do it to my dad's welding machine whenever i needed gas for my dirt bike haha, now my only problem will be mounting it on the roof all nice and secure during a trail run OR to the rear end... idk, i do like the hose idea... its a good thing to have a clear hose... it would be bad to suck on it too long and choke on gas =/

My local Harbor Freight had some jerry cans, but the wife and kids were waiting in the car so I didn't see the brand. They were ~$40. I can't find them on their website, though, so maybe it's just my local store.

No need to be suckin' on anything. Stuff the hose down into the gas can till it's filled with gas, seal off the end going into the gas tank with your thumb, lower the hose and let gravity do the rest.

 hmm sounds easy enough, now i just need a hose that will fit in the nozzle hole and long enough to go from my roof to my tank

Easy way, use a funnel to stuff in the gas tank and get that pesky plug out of the way.
On the blitz cans pictured, it's a good idea to pick up some small chain and use the holes provided in the cap and on the handle to attach the cap.

Thats a CARB compliant can, most hate this can and the leaks associated with it.
In the ad he mentions the old flip style lid leakage... the NATO style rarely leaked. Heres one i gave a bud.

I just got a can from my dad. some one gave it to him. I will snap a pic of it today. maybe some of you guys can tell me what it is. It says something about "government property" and Gas Oil holding on it.
but it looks a lot like the one in overland's picture just plastic and with a screw in lid.

It's probably the ones the military use today. I don't have any pics we took our cans off when they started getting shot.
Like this with the funky knobby top?

Never had a leaking issue with them. As long as you have a good donkey dick and you don't put it in jacked up they work great :)

muduck, check the seal on the cap. If it's rubber dont use it for gasoline. It'll swell and break the caps inner ring... if it's not already. The rubber is for Diesel.
You need a Viton seal, they go $4.50 per shipped. I can give you the contact info to order if you like.
