Broken XJ Seat

Anyone have the back of their seat fail. I leaned back the other day to reach for my wallet, hear a pop, and now it feels like the one side is always leaning farther back then the other. Is there an easy fix to something like this or is a new needed?

I had mine self destruct last summer. It really isnt a bad fix if you have any welding experiance. You do need to pull the seat out, and take off the backrest. I believe theres 3 bolts holding that on. THe fabric and cushion come off by unclipping the plastic clips on the bottom of the frame. Once you get it down to just steel you can locate and weld whatever came apart. Mine lost the back support bar and broke the welds at almost every corner. I thought I had pics of my repair, but I cant find any. It really isnt too bad to fix. Oh the other possibility is that the mount where it bolts tothe floor pulled through. THats what happened to mine first, which im sure contributed to the total failure later on. All I did to fix that was weld on a fairly thick washer to brace up the hole that ripped out.

Exact same thing happenned to me in my Escort. Sitting at McDonalds drive thru, lean back to reach for wallet, POP, seat goes back. My seat frame had broken (fatigue from fat ass at too many drive thru's) at the floor. I took out the bolts, fabricated a little reinforcement (no welder), put it back in, and it's been good for 3 years now.

I've had my drivers seat fixed twice, first about 8 years ago and then this last summer. The custom hot rod interior shop that did it charged me $50 the first time and $80 the second. They removed and stripped the seat, re-welded it and added gussets then put new padding on it and put the covers back on.
The interesting thing was the original fixes did not break, this was a new one.
He said if it breaks again there will be no charge... They did it while I went and had breakfast, what more could you ask.
