hmmm.... sounds like a good cheap way to give your car a new look. You gonna do the door jams as well??? Why not just take it to earl Schieb or 1 day?

just make sure you spend the time to do the prep properly, i just painted my xj yellow from grey and it came out awesome but with some orange peel. the primers are horrible smelling and you should wear a respirator.

Black to white? Difficult for proper coverage, but doable. Here are a few tips...
1) Don't sand down to bare metal, unless the area needs to be repaired. Knock off the clearcoat and scuff the colour coat - you're looking at 180-240-grit paper for this. This saves you having to use a primer coat - since the scuffed up colour coat will act as a primer for you (and you'll have extra protection - primer is porous, while colour coat is not. Extra colour coats = extra rust barrier.)
2) It's up to you, but I strongly advise you to do the door jambs, and take up as much trim as possible and get the colour coat at least an inch past the trim lines. This will give your paint job a more "finished" look.
3) It is far easier to cover a lighter colour with a darker colour than the other way 'round. You're going to have to take your time with this - several light coats, as you probably know, are better than one heavy coat for finish - and you're going to need several light coats of white to cover the black properly. It can be done, but don't expect it to be an after-noon job (anywhere you can take it that can cover it in an afternoon is probably going to do a very shonky job of it. Not worth spending the money - better to do it yourself and do it properly.)
Are you using rattle cans or a sprayer? Just wondering...

Ah. Note where the trim line lies (for instance, when you take out the door sill plate.) Paint to about one full inch past that, so the new paint colour coat runs under the trim line.
Trim tends to wiggle about - if you paint right up to the edge of the trim, you're going to have the original colour show past the trim every now and again. An inch is overkill, but enough to work with.

allright, also is it better to take off the door handles or what? and do you know if the windshield wipers just pop off? i might start priming it this weekend if i get the chance. also maybe any tips on masking off windows or anything? this is going to be my 1st time doing any major painting

When i painted my xj i took everything off, but depending on how long you have to paint it will determine how much you take off. But door handles window trim, rear windows removed, fender flares, front grille, everything.
The only three things i taped off was the door locks.
This is my second XJ so i had the time to take to do it right, all in all it took about 4-5 full days of work in about a weeks time.
And i went from the grey to the yellow, for about $350 in supplies. Used 3/4 gallon of yellow.

Remove as much as possible, given time and tools.
Recall that probably 90% of a quality paint job is in the preparation - scuffing, stripping, priming, removing parts, masking - the more work you can do there, the less you'll have to do later.
