It's pretty easy to find, you really can't miss it. You can Mapquest Boone Rd and Old Woman Springs Rd in Johnson Valley, plus there are directions on the King of the Hammers website in the spectator information section. Once you turn on Boone Rd (it only goes to the north) you can't miss it from there, just drive a few miles to the lakebed and the RV city that will be there. :)

The camping set up is still not finalized.
I'm not sure they will have enough room in the alloted space.
If not I'll find us a good location and let you all know where it is.

When you leaving? I've been to JV a bunch of times. But probably won't be leaving until Thur night or Fri morning so I can see race day, and then go play around Sat morning.
Thanks man, ill figure it one way or another.
I set this up for the 10th Annual SoCalXJ.com Jamboree at JV (that's happening two weeks after KOH):
http://www.tinyurl.com/jvdirections
That's the road out to the usual camping spot in JV. If you want custom directions, single click on the little green camp icon and then "get directions" to here from your place.
The camping set up is still not finalized.

That's a joke right? Or are they doing some official burning man/nascar style camping spots? I just figured it was going to be like any other thing out at JV. It's the desert, camp wherever.

Yep, burning man style main camp setup. There will be vendor areas and areas set aside for race admin stuff, plus main race camp is also one of the pit locations, so each team gets assigned an area for their main camp/main pit location. We don't know quite yet how it's going to be, we might not know exactly until we get there. We're anticipating that we can't have all of our group in the pit location, but we'll have to figure it out when we get better details or when we get out there. It also looks like they are going to set up general camping areas leaving isles for fire and emergency access.
There will likely need to be some cell phone communication with folks out there, so you folks coming out for race day know where to find us. We'll post up info as we get it.

No problemo. We can caravan. I was just planning on playing the camp site by ear. Especially since they are organizing camp spots this year. Not sure what to expect when we get there. We can try and find a spot within the group, or just go off and find a place close by the group but out of the mess. It's a pretty big place.

I think usually by 2 it's too late. You'll miss SD traffic, but you'll hit the traffic in the other counties most of the way there. Might as well wait out the traffic at home or work. Especially since I was planning on working a full day Thur, heading home, eating dinner, loading up the Jeep, then going. We'll get in real late at night, but there shouldn't be any traffic. I'm flexible too. I can see about doing a half day Thur. If you want to try and miss traffic. Be on the road by noon.

I'm leaving some time after 1:45 on Thursday, and will either drive up solo, or caravan. Not big on LA traffic, so leaving San Diego 6-ish might avoid all that. But I don't want to get up there too late, either, as (a) the race starts early Friday a.m., and (b) I think they have a "quiet time" in the pits after 10pm Thurs night.
I hear rumors that the "pit" areas might be 40x100 or so, so that would mean we'll be likely camping elsewhere. I'll either be stealing floor space or crashing in my Jeep, depending on when/where/whatever. I don't want to set up my 4-6 person tent for just me--too cold, and too much of a pain in the arse.
We'll figure it out, I'm sure. But count me in as a "maybe" on the Caravan. I pretty much know where I'm going, if anyone wants to tag along and if I don't caravan.

I just wanna make sure if I ride up with Carol I'm gonna have a way to get around the course...don't think her little stock rig is gonna get up and down the hammers....but I have yet to see her drive. =)
Of course, I've never been, and I'm not sure what the spectator arena will be like...but like I said, I'm pretty easy...I'll have a portable cooler full of adult sodas so all is right with the world as far as I'm concerned.

oh, well I don't have an aversion to driving. I just didn't see a need to have 4 people driving 4 jeeps all to go to the same place to watch a race. Unless you planned on hanging out and wheeling all weekend...but it doesn't sound like it. And I figure they probably won't let anyone actually on the hammers....I just don't know how rough the terrain will be getting to decent spots to catch that kodak moment.

Yeah, I'll be skipping the Hammers =). I may ride biyatch with someone, or I may be a test vehicle for the bunny trail (outer loop) or Bullfrog if they think it's feasible for my rig (what trails, exactly, can a stock rig with rock rails & skids do?). That's because the SoCal XJ Jambo is 2 weeks after KOH, at JV, and they're trying to make sure they have runs for any and all rigs that show, from stock to fully loaded.
So I'm taking my XJ, and if you want to tag along, Mike, you're welcome to. But no, you wouldn't then be in a rig that's set up to do Hammers.

Mike, were you there last year? Can a stock rig get to all the places one would want to get to in order to see the race? As I recall, it's an all day race. I imagine there will be some moving around and relocating....mainly since I'm primarily interested in Blue 52 again. =) But I've never been to JV so I don't know if there's roads and bypasses to get to the top, or if you have to take one of the trails up (obviously a trail not involved in the race). Anywho, maybe I should just keep my mouth shut and drive....just deal with crap as it comes. =)

Being there last year has nothing to do with it (I wasn't though). The course will probably not be the same. But I know JV. You can get around JV in a stock rig just fine. There's nothing a stocker can't do to GET to the trail heads. That's about all you want to do (or allowed to do I'm sure). According to the KOH website, they'll be 6 spots to watch. Although from the sounds of the spots, they sound lame.
"There will be six ‘viewing areas’ within one mile (on dirt roads) of main camp. Two of the areas will have a PA system to keep you apprised of all the action. Main camp will also have a live action map that shows the current location of all the racers. The same map will be available on line as well."

Bah, I hate surgery.....but with 31 motorcycle accidents under my belt, it's more a matter of been there, done that. =)
But did you go to the hospital all 31 times?

Hah, no! Just say, "NO INSURANCE!!!!", and paramedics are a lot less likely to drag your ass in. =) I've only been hauled in 3 times, twice for hypodensity of the brain, and once for multiple fractures of the right leg....most, I've been able to get up walk away, and stitch myself up....well I had this buddy that dated a nurse.....

I remember when the paramedics took me to the wrong hostipal, and i was stuck there for like 3 hours. I sure am glad i have insurance though.

What the hell you mean, "the wrong hospital".....I grew up in the country, and even them boys knew the difference between roadkill and an accident!

Scattered clouds according to http://www.wunderground.com . I should be loaded by oh, 1 or 2am tonight. Found some damage from pulling that tree stump last week that I should've checked earlier. Needless to say, when the winch is dragging you forward, and reverse just isn't cutting it, don't toss it into 4 low while sitting on the street in front of your house to hold you there, reverse, 4.56's dry pavement, 33's, throttle and a dana 30 don't mix. Good news is the stump is out. :)

Sounds about perfect to me! In fact, I was planning on leaving around noonish to hit Stone on the way out, but I could either get it early or just meet ya in Escondildo.
Stone works for me. I'm leaving straight from work just after lunch. And I work like a mile from Stone. Somewhere like 12:30-1 at Stone?

Johnson Valley is in the town of Landers, not Lucerne Valley. Landers is a bit closer then LV too. So you're probably better off with:
