That's nothing. There was a judge who took a javelin in the shoulder, just behind the collar bone.

Crap! Now I'm going to have to try to find a link to the video.

Haven't found the one I was looking for, but NCU has documented (http://www.unc.edu/depts/nccsi/AllSport.htm) a number of incidents.

There have also been 22 accidents in high school track involving participants being struck by a thrown discus, shot put or javelin. In 1992, a female athlete was struck by a thrown discus in practice and died. In 1993, a track manager was struck in the neck by a javelin, but he was lucky and completely recovered from the accident. In 1994, a female track athlete was struck in the face by a javelin and will recover. In 1995, a male athlete was struck in the head by a shot put during warm-ups and had a fractured skull. In 1997, a male athlete was struck by a discus and died. In 1998 a female athlete was struck by a discus and died, and a male athlete was struck in the head by a shot-put and recovered. In 1999 a male athlete was struck by a javelin and a female athlete was struck by a discus. In 2000 a junior high school athlete was struck in the head by a discus and has permanent disability. In 2001 a high school athlete was struck in the cheek with a javelin during practice. In 2002 there were three athletes struck by a shot putt and one by a discus. In 2002 there was also a coach that was struck by a shot putt. In 2004 a male track athlete was hit in the head with a shot putt and was in critical condition. Actually, Norse sagas are full of death by javelin. A very popular weapon throughout the world: it is, after all, just a fancy name for spear. An atlatl and dart are way more effective, though.

I've been present two different times when somebody sprained their ankle - one in a pick-up game of basketball and the other just throwing the frisbee around. Not a pleasent sound. Kind of a cross between a 'crack' and a 'pop'.

Good luck with yours. Got AFLAC?

It was on the Job, so I got Workmans Comp instead!
I was stepping off the curb to get in my '98 Limited to move it from where I'd emptied stuff I ran between stores to where I normally park when it happened, the base of curb was just high enough off the parking lot to get things in motion, I heard that pop (dead on with unpleasnt sound by the way) and next thing I know I was laying on the drivers seat of my Jeep wondering if that pop was bad and how I didn't hit my head on the roof portion of the door jab on the way in. I even worked for a couple hours till the boss told me to get it looked at (I was limping pretty bad by then)!

As long as it's not federal workers comp. That takes forever to process. I stabbed myself in the finger once, at work. It wasn't bad but I figured get it documented in case I get tetnis or something. You should have seen the eyes roll in the emergency room when I told them it was federal comp. At least five people who were within ear shot looked to the ceiling at the same time :laugh2:

serious note: Make sure the ankle gets fixed. You'll need it later.

Damn. I wish I could find a clip of the guy I saw get hit. It was a televised competition. He was wearing a sport jacket, I remember he was gray haired. He was looking off to his left when the javelin came down. If you look at the angle of the one in the ladies foot, that's the same tragectory that hit him, except in the shoulder. It took him just behind the left collar bone. It didn't come out his back so I assume it lodged in his scapula. The force drove him down and back slightly but did not knock him over. Then, with this great honkin' javelin sticking up out of his shoulder, it pulled him over forward 'till he went down on his knees. The coverage broke away there with him on his hands and knees, the business end of the javelin in his shoulder and the other end resting on the ground out in front of him.

Has anybody else ever seen that? I'm beginning to think it was a dream. I can't find a clip on-line.
