As of right now, the Jeep is about to go down for some serious surgery. I've reached the point of no return, and I have no real weekend projects for it anymore. Anything and everything I need to do from here on out is going to take some time. Therefore things will slow down a bit, but the plans on the waiting list are as follows:
Full DOM 1.5" roll cage
Custom built upper and lower control arms with heims, possibly long arm
2.5" bypass shocks in the rear, through the floor, 16" travel
Deaver Spring under conversion
2.5" bypass coilovers up front w/ engine cage
Trussed front and rear axles
DOM heim steering
Anyway! That's her so far! Stay tuned for more!!!

I would go 1.75 on the cage. My buddy did the math at the steal yard and it was like a 14 pound difference when he did his cage. It is the wall thickness that really adds the weight on.

I've considered it, but 1.5 from what I've seen will hold up well... and my main reason is weight, but also the ability to tuck. I dunno, I've thought about doing the main section out of 1.75 and all support bars and braces at 1.5".

Most of mine is 1.75 but I did do a few cross bars in 1.5. I am 6' tall and bout 200 pounds and have plenty of room everywhere.

Handles the landings GREAT! Air bumps are FTW. And the glassworks have been good to me, have held up great. The fitment was horrible though at first, and still isn't great... but I suppose that's just life with glass.

Thanks, looking forward to seeing your next build here as well :lickout:

Hahaha it's definitely not hard. Mine actually isn't that bad, it's my C's that are effed.
Keep up the work Jim! Your jeep is schweeeeet!
Thanks! Feel free to hang around the jeepspeed section more :D
hows the 3.55s & the 33s ??
Not bad at all for me, but my motor also only has 90k on it, vs. the 200+ most guys have. Eventually I'll regear, but the 3.55's keep me moving just fine, and in low for crawling I have absolutely NO complaints... not the sheepish dog some would have you believe.
Very nice!
Thanks... it'd be way nicer with a certain leduc built HP D30 so I can just run my coilovers finally :tears:

Nope, still got the busted ass head on it hahaha. On a side note though the valve cover went to the powder coaters today. This'll give me an opportunity to make SURE I design my engine cage with a removable brace.

October 16th, 2009, 17:24
Well, I'm running the T&J cage, it sleeves together in the middle, which is super strong. That way I can completely remove the cage before welding it in. You can see here the entire cage is out of the Jeep. Just remove ALL interior first so you don't fight with it to get it in and out. Once you get the top welded up, put everything back in and finish the bottom.

wish i was closer... ive taken out 6 of em now, all pre 96. i would love to rip into a new one :D
I can get a 96- dash out in about 20 mins now. not sure on the 97+ but dont forget to check for small bolts/screws holding the defroster vent on, there may also be a couple back there going into the firewall. also ive found it handy to pull any switch or anything like that, feed the wire back out the bottom, then plug the switch back in and let it sit on the floor. helps cut the confusion when you go to put something back in ;)

Mine were a bit different than most would be, since Joel and Shane over at bilstein hooked it up with some prototype stuff, so it was a while, but as for normal orders they build and ship out pretty damn fast from what I understand.
Shock mounts aren't ready, I was waiting on the shocks for mock up, now I need to find a 1.75" pro tools die... it's always something.

Dash- GRIMM
Insulation- Which insulation? The stuff glued to the floor under carpet?
Remove/Relocate Battery- Do you have power wire and battery box as well as location where it is going yet?
Remove Airbox- Easy enough
Relocate Airbox- Wouldn't this have to wait until you get engine cage in?
Relocate wire harness for engine cage- Do you plan on just moving it as much as you can or what?
Remove Alcans/ Install Deavers- You are going to need to break the deavers down to main leaf and get a block the size of others so you can fab your mounting points and check your suspension first, don't forget.

Not really sure actually, they were a custom pack for buggy that I bought from Cal a few months back. I sent them in to Deaver and had them re-worked for a heavier Jeepspeed type setup and had them do a full race prep.
Put them on the manche!
Won't work, and nobody makes a GOOD spring for the MJ. They're either all AAL's or SOA swaps which leaves you with stock gay springs.

The lights in the back window? From what I understand if it has an amber light in the rear window its a faster class and one with a blue and an Amber light is a slower class.

December 24th, 2009, 21:53
yea, its so other cars can see you from behind, the amber light penetrates the dust better. and yes the slower class vehicles have to have a blue light as well

ahhh.... how much did that run ya jim? maybe ill try and sell these ones i got and do the same!
If I remember right it was around $450 for the set.
why is it with the lights mounted on the inside of the "pre runner" style jeeps? ive seen it acouple of times on here now
Yea the amber light in the rear is to cut through dust, so other vehicles behind you see you. The red just won't go as far in dust.

Close, but not quite. Amber is just a safety light, everybody is required to run them in a sanctioning body. Us guys who chase do it for the same safety reasons, so people see us if we end up on the course. The blue light does indicate slow traffic, but slower classes aren't REQUIRED to run them if I recall correctly, but some choose to. For instance when you're running the Baja like Filar did, he chose to run a blue to avoid a trophy truck from running him over haha. If you see an amber light in front of you, you know there's a vehicle up there. If you see a blue light, you know it's a slower vehicle, and it gets you ready to have to dodge something.

Cool, thanks for clearing that up Jim! I like the thought of having a blue light because I don't think being hit by a trophy truck sounds too fun! :D

The blue light is required for the slower classes in Best In The Desert series. They show up on the Jeepspeeds because two(I think) of the BITD races are Jeepspeed events. SCORE and MORE don't require them.

UPDATE!!!!!
Well, spent all day yesterday working on the XJ. It was nice getting back under the thing. It's a bit upsetting to see what condition it is in, rust has seemed to overtake my axles, frame stiffeners etc. It's all just surface rust, and nothing bad, but it definitely needs some TLC. She's also going to need a GOOD wetsand / buff if not a new paintjob once she's done as well. The sun hasn't treated her well.
Anyway, yesterday's plan was to get her back to ride height, and back on some 33's. I went over to install my
Deaver rear springs
Throw the coil spacers on the front (which I will not be using now)
T&J front shock mounts bolted up (will weld later)
Install Track bar drop bracket / Track Bar / Track Bar brace
As always nothing went smoothly, my leaf spring bolts are destroyed! My front bushing on the passenger side must have been done for quite some time, see the picture of it below. All 4 bolts were marred, the front two being the worst. I spent a couple hours trying to source a bolt somewhere but was unable to find the funky ass bolt for it. I'll call the dealer on Tuesday. The threw bolt on the passenger side broke as well, and the bottom leaf fell off when I took it off the axle. I also need new U-Bolts, however those can go on when I drop the new axle in. We loosely installed the leafs to get her moving around. On to the front, again nothing lined up well there, but eventually we got it. All in all it was definitely a day working on the Jeep, she reminded me how much of a bitch she can be and why I shouldn't neglect her for so long.... payback it seems. Anyway, here are some pictures, pay no mind to how dirty she is, she'll be getting a bath soon.
This is how she's looked for the past year

She's sitting a little low in the front end, granted I have no weight over the rear of my fresh Deavers either. But it's looking like I'm going to go with a Deaver 5.5 spring and ditch the coil spacer. I had planned on running the 3.5" full traction coils since they seemed to work so well for me, but won't be able to get the spacer over my bump cans, it's just too big and I can't grind the inside of the spacer enough without losing the lip.

I know, I've talked to Tony multiple times about having dave come out, I've got a few chips etc though that can't be "buffed" out. And yes, it was nice to drive it under it's own power into the garage haha. I need to get those breathers from you for the top of the valve cover too, don't let me forget that.
As for the wheels, I'm not looking for black wheels, but the fact they're 15x7 instead of 15x8 is tempting ;)

They're a boomerang shackle, a but hard to see in the picture, and the shot you see of them is at droop, the angle is WAY better at ride height. Probably a good 45 degrees or so. I'm sure I'll have interference at bump with the rear cross member, but I intend on removing what's not necessary and plating the rest.

Worked on her a bit more today, didn't get a whole lot done, only got a few hours in since I worked til 7:00am. Pulled the dash out, and started planning out changing my a-pillar bars. Now that the Jeep is going to be street friendly again, I want my door panels back, which means I'll have to run my a-pillar bars down through the dash. Originally I turned the pillars out a bit from the T&J kit to give me more foot room, but I wasn't able to shut my doors with the original panels on.
The dash in this thing was a BITCH to remove. Every 4" was another wire attached by a stupid plastic clip. It's definitely not going back together the same way it was from the factory.

You can see in these shots that without the dash, the a-pillar bars have a lot of room to move. We'll be starting on that tomorrow.
