paint markers on filler plugs

Just got done changing the fluid in both diffs and the transfer case. All three filler plugs had a smear of paint marker over them onto the face of the covers. Did they do this at the factory or what? All three looked nasty, but the front diff was heinosity personified! I'm embarrased I put it off so long, it was really easy.

I just changed my dif fluids for first time in 2 years since I bought it. Noticed swamp water like fluid on axles while I was changing u-joints. What I had in the oil pan from both difs was ugly ugly ugly, and not even as much as was needed in one dif. Simple simple maintenance that will never be skipped again (5gallon tank of synth free from work makes it easy too)
thankful I didn't have any problems till this point.
