The last time I talked to Jake at T&J he mentioned you had picked up an MJ
But I kept quiet :gag:
But there seems to be something wrong with it
I just can't put my finger on it though.....
Maybe the front clip doesn't look like an 86...no that's not it
seems like something else is out of place
just looks wrong for a Ryno vehicle
hmmmmmm ??????
Wait

If you're really gonna tow with it, better BEEF the hell outta the "frame". I would also skip the V6 and pick up a V8.
And if you intend to flat tow....add about 1000 lbs of gear to the bed....MINIMUM! Too light in the ass and you'll get pushed around a corner someday.

I'm still working out the details of the entire project. I'm gonna start with the engine and trans swap, then go from there. The initial plan is to make it the twin for ol' orange! Right now I'm just trying to collect parts and knowledge.
Thanks for all the input and comments, and Cory, couldn't tell you why it seems familiar. :shhh:

In my opinion, since you are doing a swap anyways? Why not a V8? Plenty of power and probably more reliable than a V6. Parts are cheap now, sure you could pick up an LS1, or a different LS motor for fairily cheap. Or even on of the newer 5.3L or 6.0L GM truck engines and swap a LS intake on it.

Hey Dean, I'm gonna have to agree on the engine deal. That V6 has got some power, but I think you'll be hating life when you try to tow.
One option for the V8 is the 4.7L Chrysler engine. Great motor, good power, even if you don't get the H.O. version. Just a thought.

Are you going to drive it a lot? With the price if diesel it just isn't too practical for a daily driver these days, whether it's going to become practical again I do not know.
If the price of fuel doesn't factor in I'm with John on suggesting a 4bt. The more expensive option would be a CRD out of a Liberty (not sure if the Dodge Sprinter CRD is the same or if it'll fit, but that might be an easier to obtain swap if so since the sell them in California).

I wouldn't tow the xj with a mj you really want something wider and longer that weighs more than what you are towing. As for engine it all depends what you want to do with the truck.
4.3 is a decent all around work hoarse of a motor and plenty of hoppup parts are out there

Honestly, the mileage is decent, especially, if you gear properly. One thing I have also wanted to do is a 4BT swap, you can get great mileage out of those. I would say a V8 that would take the least amount of work installing would be a 318 out of a ZJ or Dakota.

January 28th, 2009, 16:44
My issue with the 318 and the 360 is that they are a physically large motor. I saw an XJ not to long ago with a 360 in it and they had a lot of things to deal with to get it in there. Custom headers, custom intermediate steering shaft, etc. The 4.7L fits beautifully. Nick at Jeeptricks put one into one of his MJs with a NV3550 behind it and a 242, wicked set up.
Not to mention weight differences. The 4.7L is only 50lbs heavier than the 4.0L, partly bcuz of it's aluminum heads. The 318 or 360 are quite a bit heavier.
The 318 and 360 engines are great, don't get me wrong. But power to weight, you can't beat the 4.7L. I believe the low output 4.7 is 250hp and the H.O. version is 280hp. The 360 I had in my 98 Ram only had 245hp when it was new/in stock form.

An LSx or a LQ base with an LS intake is better than all of them, except for maybe a 4BT. As the LS1 has 320hp stock..

The biggest problem with the 8 is getting a big enough radiator to cool it.

Two things...4bt is WAY cheaper than a CRD motor. 4bt will get WAY better mileage than any V6 or V8. Unloaded mileage would be in the high 20's....well worth the extra $.25 at the pump. Towing mileage would still be in the mid to high teens.
The biggest problem with the 8 is getting a big enough radiator to cool it.
Another reason to go diesel. A diesel engine runs cooler than gas :D
If you do decide to go with a 4bt....do yourself one huge favor, make sure it is a inline injector pump(bosch), NOT rotary. Also, be sure to get one from a vehicle of some kind. For it to be a legal swap it CANNOT be from a generator, pump, or other stationary device.

Notice the inline pump...very important.
Comes with a Allison trans which would be cool, but won't work with the transfercase. You could probably get enough from the Allison to buy all the other needed parts...bellhousing and starter, etc. to go with a chevy, dodge, or ford trans.
Bellhousings on the 6bt's are changeable, I would have to assume the 4bts are the same way.
If you just search "4bt" on ebay you will find anything you need.
Just noticed the one I posted has the bellhousing removed....So yes, they are interchangeable.

I agree the inline P series pumps are FAR superior to the VE rotary pumps, the problem is intercooler plumbing under a stock hood that will clear the P series injection lines. I had a line on a P pumped conversion for my 4BTA powered '92 MJ, but passed on it due to space constraints. The VE pump can make ALOT of torque at very respectable MPG's, and are much cheaper to obtain. With around $60 in parts and about 1.5 hours of work my truck is making about 190hp/470ftlbs at the crank and averages 28mpg. If you are worried about the weight added from an engine swap, than a 4BT is not for you, it weighs over 750lbs. But, for towing, you can't beat and engine that makes nearly 500ft lbs at 1800rpm.

Very true - Though the Chrysler engine will be easier to get through California's smog system. For some reason they are a little more lenient on motor swaps from same brand. ie using a Grand Cherokee computer to run the motor. Not to say it can't be done, we have done it here at T and J many times.
Either way you go Dean....for a tow rig, that 4cyl has got to go! For a trail rig, It would be nice to have a bigger engine in there, but you don't need it...but want it. Hell, we all want it for you! haha

Might have a line on a complete diesel motor and trans, might even get a full width D60, If the price is right I might just drop it in the MJ and run full width axles. D44 up front and D60 rear. It'll be a lot of work , but it will also be fun.

How much did they want for it? Not that I can afford it, but I can dream!

Two things...4bt is WAY cheaper than a CRD motor. 4bt will get WAY better mileage than any V6 or V8. Unloaded mileage would be in the high 20's....well worth the extra $.25 at the pump. Towing mileage would still be in the mid to high teens.
Actually, I have seen high 20s from LS powered vehicles, all depends on the gearing/trans and how you drive it. But overall, for what it is, YES the 4bt will have better mileage.

Easily done when your drag coeffiecient is slightly less than an f16 (vette or camaro).
Show me a truck with an LS motor that gets over 20 around town :D and no, hybrids don't count.

Well it looks like for financial reasons the 4.3 is going to be closer to my budget (like I'm gonna stick to a budget.......don't tell my wife I said that! :eyes:) any way, for now that's what is going in. I am still considering the diesel for a future project though. Soooo who wants to turn some wrenches? :D

Well, I just found out recently that the MJ I have is a late body style change. That means that a 4.0 will fit in there after all, so now I'm thinking 4.2 stroker engine. Guess I'll start looking for a donor vehicle that has the parts I need.
Thanks for the info Bo.

I think he just meant he'd be using a 4.2 crank, probably go at least to a 4.6 anyway :D

BTW, I have a 88 4.0 and a 4.2 crank if you're intersted, don't think I'll ever find the time to put them together.

Hey Dean...
It looks like you're going to have fun with this project.... I'm waiting to see what motor you actually put in that puppy.. I would say to do a propane conversion, but the tanks are BIG.. I say propane for no particular reason... just because.. :D
Anywho, from the looks of your XJ, I'm sure your MJ will come out looking cool...

If you do a CNG conversion you can fill it up right from your garage.

Once I get everything together I will document the build and post updates.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, I'm looking forward to getting started.

There are 2 setbacks - 1) The general public can not buy CNG conversion kits..... legally.. Only certified installers are allowed to buy kits from the manufactures. 2) You would need a Phil Station in order to get the natural gas from your house to your car...
I looked into this for MANY years.. ;)
Th public can buy propane kits for "off-road" use.... :D

Well last night while I was not sleeping, I started to think of my project and came to an interesting Idea. As I was trying to figure out how I am going to get parts, and how much it was going to cost, I remembered that I have a '95 4 door that would be a perfect donor. Of course I have to ask the boss first, plus I need to figure out if I want to ravage the '95 for the '86 MJ.

Don't kill a good jeep when there's no reason that the 95 should be parted out
