I am thinking about installing a sub in the back of my 90 XJ and saw some posts here where an individual used the cubbyhole area. Since I do not want to practice on my original panel I went to the junkyard and found an old one. Problem is whoever owned it decided to paint the taupe interior gray! Even the liner!

A lot of the paint is peeling off but I was wondering what I could use to take off the paint to get to the original color.

I also have a similar problem with the dash/instrument cluster/radio/knob cover. Someone painted that a silver and I would like to get it to the original gray.

Thanks,

LTK

Unfortunately the original color is paint too. No expert, but I suspect any chemical to assist removing the topcoat will remove the OEM job too.

On the bright side, it only takes a little bit of care to cut the pocket out. Cut from the back side with a dremel with a plastic-cutting wheel. I held the dremel perpendicular to the panel, so that I was actually cutting the side of the outer indention. Makes it less likely to slip and cut something on the front side of the panel. It will slag up a little on the side you cut from, which is why cut from the back. Some 150 grit will nicely finish up any uneven edges and stringies.

It's Dye.

if your just practicing on it does it matter what color it is?
