As I am sitting here waiting for the heater in the shop to do it's job, I was making up my final "to do" list for Winterfest. It is as follows:

-Finish up rear disc brake conversion (should be done today)
-install rear shocks (should be done today as well)
-change fuilds in all cavities (hope to get to today)
-install my new TNT y-link kit (work on over the next week or two)
-run new ground cable (might try to get one off 5-90)
-knock off the surface rust and repaint rockers, bumpers, sliders.. basically everything that will cover w/ black spray paint :D
-build a multi place spare tire carrier for the trailer since I am bringing an azz pot full of spares for people.
-service tow rig and trailer
-stop at liquor store to pick up some cases of Fat Tire

Whats everyone else have left to do??

some of you guys in sleeping bags should consider splitting a room at the Attica Inn 765-762-3699. They have two beds to a room and it runs about $75.00. There will be plenty of other Naxja WF XJ's there. It is about a mile and a half from the Badlands and they welcome off-roaders and their trailers.

Find another electric fan from a Land Rover. Sure are hard to find.
Install new bushings in all control arms.
Find Badlands flag from Winterfest 06. Around somewhere.
Fix tranny seal leak. Probably not.

- Install CB
- Figure out where to mount spare when XJ&TJ4ME hooks me up
- Determine if my transfer case is boned (the other day it only wanted to move in 4LO)
- Fix rocker panels (pulled the molding and most of the rocker came with it... saw someone on here that made replacements... can't remember who though?)

- Buy a full size tow vehicle and trailer
^^ Probably not going to happen before WF, but if it does then I will know no fear on the trails.

The battery posts were all full of corrosion!

These are small maintenance issues you all should check before leaving home.

It'll can save you from freezing your azz off in the middle of the Badlands.

And to anyone with a stocker concerned about how it will do, the single biggest improvement you can make is to disconnect the swaybar. Ditch the rear if so equipped, and if nothing else, unbolt the front links.

great advice john, aside from making sure that a stocker meets the trail equipment guidelines (i e tow points) the very first thing that i would add is rock rails...

you hit the nail on the head man!

Make sure you have another set of end links because they are probably gonna break. I ditched my rear sway bar and got a ton of flex out of it. Its still just as stable. I'm not exactly sure why there was one in the first place! :dunno: My little jeep did way better than i thought at Redbird. here are some disconnects...and JKS is a Naxja sponsor.
this will give you much better articulation.
it keeps your wheels on the ground when
you are on uneven surfaces.
I would get this before sliders.
and take off the rear sway bar.
these disconnects are an easy install.

If you ever plan on doing bumpers, then your tow hooks will be unneeded, so just buy something cheap if that's the case. I've got JCR stage 2 sliders (the girl wanted a step, although I think she had more of a running board in mind, but...). Anyway, they work great.

And I've driven my jeep with 5.5" lift cross country multiple times without sway bars, never had any problems, just don't drive it like a sports car.

Whip antennas are no good on the trail. They like to get caught up on trees and whip loose. If you run one, don't let anyone near your rig while it is moving. But trust me, after the first couple of times it smacks the top of your rig, you will be taking it off.

I am surprised we even allow them.

-Finish up rear disc brake conversion (should be done today) DONE
-install rear shocks (should be done today as well) DONE
-change fuilds in all cavities (hope to get to today) DONE
-install my new TNT y-link kit In the process
-run new ground cable (might try to get one off 5-90) DONE (made my own)
-knock off the surface rust and repaint rockers, bumpers, sliders.. basically everything that will cover w/ black spray paint DONE
-build a multi place spare tire carrier for the trailer since I am bringing an azz pot full of spares for people. SOMEWHAT DONE..good enough for this trip
-service tow rig and trailer
-stop at liquor store to pick up some cases of Fat Tire

Getting closer to being ready. Going to service the tow rig tonight and going to try and pick up the Fat Tire while I am in town this weekend. Gonna have to get an extra case since it will be a 2 week hold over until WF :D

Hope to have the long arms finished up by mid next week due to being gone this weekend. Only time will tell, but they WILL be on by WF

2 weeks and counting:

Still need a spare tire and a front tow point, which I'm planning to buy at WF (hopefully those sellers don't bail and leave me hanging :)).
Need to buy a winch to attach to the front receiver once it's installed.
Need to replace my steering box again, since I put in one of the janky autozone ones and the steering feel is too "light" now.
Need to cut a new rear wooden bumper (yea that's right) due to a mishap at the Badlands a couple weeks ago.
Need to attach CB antenna and flag to said bumper.
Need to install the Dana 44 I just bought.
Need to buy a truck and car hauler so I don't have to worry about breaking anything (if I sell my car this could happen, not likely though).

The reality will be: a hastily thrown together Badlands trip where I bring a sleeping bag, a boatload of cash and forget my space heater, spare parts and half of my tools. I'll be much more prepared for my 2nd WF!

You guys that swap axles, fab cages, change suspensions, etc. in a matter of weeks: where do you get your free time and can I have some?

I am not gonna bail on ya, I am pretty trustworthy when it comes to parts dealing, ask around, I am an "OK" kinda guy, sometimes :D ) I have your spare and rim already mounted up and in the "going to WF stack". As far as spare time, it is the thing I dont have, but I do have a nice new shop that is 100' from my back door, so when I do find some spare time everything is right there and usually ready to go. But I do find myself side tracked quite often with the nacho cheese machine calling my name :D

Yea I'm not really worried about anyone bailing, especially you with how many parts you are bringing for other people.

I'm jealous of your shop! I have a 20' x 20' garage and it's usually the trail rig sitting in the middle of it while the other vehicles get to sit outside. I think the neighbors prefer not having to look at it, though. Decide if you're bringing the nacho machine? Nachos + beer = win, but I think that's been said before.

Now I know how to find you and get my spare tire. Everyone should have a unique feature so us noobies can track people down. I'll be the guy with wood 4x4s bolted to his Heep :)

Do you use your Tahoe to tow your Jeep then? I have been looking at selling my ZJ and Firebird to buy either a Tahoe/Yukon or a 1/2 ton pickup. Does it do pretty well towing that weight (guessing 5-6k lbs)? Do you have electric brakes on the trailer?

With my small garage a Tahoe is about the only full-size I can reasonably fit inside of it.

XJ&CHZ4ME
February 20th, 2009, 10:14
We use our Tahoe to haul all kinds of stuff. I have a 18' car trailer that I pull the Heep on and load it with spare tires and tools etc and it pulls it great. We have the 5.3 V8 in it and it has performed flawlessly (so far). I have had it 3 years and put over 130K on it. We have a 19" Baja boat and we have pulled it to Arkansas many times through the mini-mountains and hills w/o any problems and it has plenty of power as well. My car tailer has electric brake, which in my opinion is a must when towing with a short wheelbase tow vehicle. The boat trailer has surge brakes as well.

As far as a unique feature to find me, I would say that it is my glasses, they are plastic black frames that 9 out of 10 people would never buy. My Tahoe is white and the Heep is goldishtanishcrapish colored and I am ruinning some 35" Claws. Slim chance I might be driving one of my farm trucks and it is a white Ford F250 longbed (that looks like a farm truck :D)

Thanks for the info on your Tahoe. I can read reviews all day but there is something comforting about a person saying "I'm doing exactly what you want to do and it works fine." I think I have a buyer lined up for my Firebird and I have my eye on a trailer in town so I might be hooked up before WF!

I will look for you at WF, hopefully once I know a few people, they will know other people and eventually I'll find all the people I owe money!

I changed oil in the Rolling Ramada today.
Five Hours!
The batteries were dead, I had to jump start it.
The old oil filter was so tight that I had to jab a screw driver through it three times, to turn it off.
The oil plug in the genny was a strange 9/16" Allen socket, the local True Value didn't have one.
It was was sunk into the grass and frozen to the ground, Lar and I had to have a winching operation.
She is now a winch wench!
THe oil filter I bought at Farm and Fleet was not right, the parts store down the street ordered one, it will be here in the AM.
Started cleaning battery terminals, did you know there are 14 of them in a motor home?
three batteries, two heavy duty relays, the motor ends, and the genny ends.

I am tired!

Pretty much everything is done on the jeep. No tire carrier, spare will have to be on the roof.
Got the jeep strapped on the trailer and ready to go. The wife and I will be finishing up putting things away in the camper tonight. I feel like I am forgetting soo many things.
Probably will forget a few things. Isn't that how it always goes.:D

All I need to do is change the oil, and throw all my crap in the back. And I just hit 3,000 miles, so if I don't get it changed, I'm going any way.

Is it Thursday yet?

Steering brace modified and done. Nothing a little plasma couldn't fix :D

Everything else is going to have to wait. Finally picked up my fire extinguisher from being refilled. Should be pretty much good to go, just have to load up the trailer and gear.

well...JCR sent my bumper, but they sent it yesterday, so instead of being here today and having two days to work on it, I'll get it tomorrow, and have the rest of tomorrow to work on it. :( BUT...they did a great job getting it out on time. I called them not quite two weeks ago to order it, and they rushed it for me so I could have it for WF.

Props to JCR Offroad!!! Definitely going to buy from them again! :yelclap:

Any idea where to get one of them orange flags cheap?

boost_fr3@k
March 4th, 2009, 09:18
I bought a plastic window mounted flag for $15 at badlands last time I was there. They work great if you dont have a hole drilled for the walmartflags or whatever.

I'm gonna pick up one of those Badlands flags that screw in. My bumper has a tapped hole specifically for them, so why not use it? :)

Go to the Junk yard, get the leaves off of a Dodge Dakota, do a search for "Dodge Dakota Rear Leaves"
That is what I have.
If you want to splurge, get Brian Whoe's drop brackets, and a set of Rock Krawler 6" coils, then you too will be a BIG DOG!

Finally sold my Trans Am today! Was hoping to have a Tahoe by now and be trailering my XJ, but it looks like I'll be driving it out mid-day Friday (and if I don't break it, driving it back on Sunday!)

Putting the CB on tomorrow, and possibly putting the new winch on Friday after I get there. I'm promising myself I'll be better prepared next year. Mostly I'm just getting ready for an awesome weekend of wheeling and meeting some cool people!

Finish working this dang part time job (at least it pays for the Jeep habit)
Go to bank (get money for all the stuff I'm buying at WF)
Go to L store (to make sure I'm covered for the weekend)
Get single place trailer ready for Rosco to borrow. (he'll be doing some testing in the quarry on saturday)
Move XM sat radio and GPS from company car to Diesel (electronic gizmos)
Hook mobile driveway up to Diesel (at least trailer feels that big)
Load XJ and MJ on said moblie driveway (its big!)
Pack (Jeep is packed but my clothes aren't)
Go to grocery store (Lunchables, Lunchables, Lunchables)
Buy Ice and pack coolers (taking four coolers)
Figure out where to put stuff for four people (long bed conversion anyone?)
Go to bed at a reasonable hour (which isn't the norm for a wheelin trip)
Get the H E L L out of town (Attica Friday morning by 9amish arrival)

I've done the same thing! Never at crunch time, but I've stood at the front door waiting. It helps when you know the UPS guy.:D

BTW, I'm leaving early Friday morn. I don't recall when you're hitting the road. Give me a call, maybe we can convoy.

Our registration team should be able to take care of you. The guy in the safety yellow hoodie should be able to point you in the right direction. He should be waiting for you at the gate Sat. morning. We'll leave the parking lot (hopefully) no later than 10:15 so the earlier the better. Badlands gate opens at 9am.
Hope to see you there!

I'm about to call UPS...the UPS site says it left centralia for delivery today at 4:42am......and its still not here. I couldve picked it up myself and have gotten it back by now.

Hale, if you want to leave later on fri we can convoy. I'm planning on leaving at or shortly before 2:30. We could meet in Effingham at like 3:30 or something if you are taking 45.
