They forgot to redo the front suspension.

So now there will be boxy XJ-esque faux Jeeps available in incremental doses... the Patriot, Liberty and Commander. All they need to do is bring back the Wagoneer name in something the size of a Suburban. Excellent job keeping the Jeep brand unique, way to go. :soapbox:

Maybe they'll put a good axle with disc brakes and 4.10's on the rear so I can get one after Barbie rolls it on the first snow of the winter!

You're kidding, right? That's camouflage while the vehicle's being tested.

I'll just quote the comment I left there. IXNAY, I assume you left the comment before mine with "They don’t even have the good ole 4.0.."?
It’s like Jeep is realizing that killing the XJ was a disastrous mistake, and is trying to rectify that with vehicles like the Commander, the 4-door JK Wrangler, and now this boxy Liberty. None of them will ever come close to filling the hole left by the Cherokee though.
And Matt, you’re right. A Jeep needs a torquey 4.0 inline six, not some gutless minivan V6.

They're just trying to shrink the Commander. Cry knows they messed up with the Liberty. Now they're trying to take the Commander down to it.
But this thing is just ugly.

I'm not trying to start a massive war here, but how did chrysler mess up with the KJ? I know its not SFA, and no 4.0, and I'll agree with you there. But for being a IFS, heavier than the XJ, and a slightly smaller engine, I think it does a pretty damn good job holding its own.

If you've ever driven one, the handling is just awful. They tried to give me one to drive at work, it was disasterous. Scary at speed when the wind is blowing, and I got it high centered on a two way cow path in the middle of the Sacramento Valley.
I traded it back for my old 95 XJ when it came back from rear axle replacement.

My mom's got one that I used to drive on a daily basis untill I got my XJ, and I still usually drive it once or twice on the weekends when im back home, as well as do all the work on it. I prefer the handling of my XJ over the KJ, but still, the KJ is pretty damn tough given what it's got. It's also very affordable....she got alot of Jeep for not alot of money compared to other vehicles.
That being said I still like the 02-04 body style KJ's...the 05-06 are growing on me, but I don't care too much for the new design.

I'd like to know who the brainiacs are who come up with this stuff. They stop producing the XJ only to gradually start rebuilding another vehicle to look the same. By the time they are done redesigning the liberty it will be just like the xj without a solid front axle or the 4.0. So what is the point? Just a long drawn out way to get rid of that engine suspension package?

Friends have one... I was not impressed with the ride, seems jouncy. The back doors are an improvement over the XJ however, making for easier ingress and egress.

I don't care for the KJ in any great manner, but I don't think DC messed up with it. They're everywhere. Perhaps it's not what a Jeep should be, but sales wise, it's a pretty good success. DC looks at the bottom line, and small SUVs make money.

That's about the only good thing in my opinion.
