I'm a Wheel Vehicle Mechanic in the Army Reserve, and ever since I graduated job training I have been trying to get my unit to send me to Vehicle Recovery Course. Finally, almost 2 years later, they sloted me to go in October. Here is some pics from the schools website, I'll deffinatly be taking my camera and will be taking some pics when I get there.

I grew up on a farm and the only thing fun about mud is watching someone else get stuck when you know you don't have to do anything about it.

Rule Number 1, he who drove it in does the hookup and any necessary diving.
Rule Number 2, rule number one will ALWAYS be obeyed no matter if the driver is enlisted or an officer....
Rule Number 3, rules 1 and 2 are NON negotiable... unless sufficient amounts of alcholoic beverages are arranged before hand...

That is good stuff. Brings back memories of Fort Lost In The Woods, Missery.
Have fun, it is a good time.

They have them all over the place, even Hawaii, didn't get that one though. :tear: The one I'm going to is a National Guard Training Center in Salina, KS. Might be driving my newly purchased XJ there, 960 mile round trip... :scared:

Wish I had had a camera handy when it happened. We were up at Ft Drum working with the 3/113 mech Inf batallion when they crossed a small 'stream' about 30ft wide between two fields, turned out it was only 2ft deep on foot but once the track got in there it sunk in the 2ft water and 5 more feet of mud. Didn't help that the motor pool did not issue the drain plugs and it sunk like rock with the squads duffles and equipment floating out thru the crew hatch, the only thing sticking up was the M2 browning, open hatches and the antenna. It took TWO M88's to drag it out hooked to ten steel tow cables each so they could spread out, they were also sinking in the field mud, 3 days of rain tends to do that. The squad leader that ordered them thru the water in the first place ended up doing the diving, that was one ticked off 2nd LT, maybe next time his TC says 'but sir, we dont have any drain plugs' he'll listen...
Then there was the M48 that was 'attacking' and crossing a field at high speed and drove into a empty foundation, got all the way in to what had been a small ranch house sometime in the past, took them close to 12 hours to extract it.

The "recovery rule" in the Cavalry was the crew of the stuck vehicle bought a case of 'good' beer for the crew of the recovering vehicle. This was also non-negotiable. Also see rule #1 above...

My boys watch that religiously. So do I :D I saw that one. It's become a contest, now, to see who can get Mike Rowe the dirtiest.
My favorite is when he was with them coona$$ cajuns making anduille and cracklin' . mmmm...anduille on the grill, a dark beer and some cracklin'. Can't beat that.
Hey! Don't listen to those nay-sayin' humps. Go have some fun, never forget rule #1, and always collect the beer "up front'.

Mmmmm NGTC Salina... what memories:
The Tony's Pizza factory 'right next door' = the most awesome aroma, all day long... They used to send big boxes of the fragments/seconds over there and we'd chow down on that stuff.
Also the B1B Lancers out of Dyess or McConnell AFBs doing touch & go's at the neighboring airfield was pretty frickin cool.
JP-8 and Pizza fumes... mmmmmm

JP-4 in the states, or has that been replaced with JP-8 since I've gotten out?
Used to be, JP-8 was only used in Europe.

Beats me OT... this was back in the late 80s... I know they fed JP4 to our Air Troop's AH 1 and OH 58 heliclippers. It all smells like burning kerosene to me though... During my brief stint as a POL driver, I always got stuck hauling diesel (or was it #2 fuel oil LOL) & MOGAS to the ground Troops. Another couple dedicated fuelers kept the whirlygigs topped off.

army uses all JP-8 now.
and in aviation we have somewhat of the same rule also. when starting our helicopters, you have to use the auxilary power unit on the aircraft.......the rule is "he who dumps it pumps it"
and it sucks ass to pump 3000 psi into a apu accumulator......especially when you have 2 on an aircraft because its been configured for cold weather operations.

I like genuine ACME brand Dehydrated Boulders... saves me the trip to Moab!
http://home.nc.rr.com/tuco/looney/acme/dehydrated.jpg
And to keep things from getting mundane, I just pop a few of these every once in awhile... it's easier than manually moving the boulders.

And I only use this for armoring my rig...

Now THAT is a doozie of a find! Unbelievable that it wasn't rusted at all and was still nearly operational.
I wonder if the peat has anti-corrosive properties...

Depends on the oxygen content over the years. Also, peat is chock full of tannic acid. Prospect are pretty good for some excellent preservation.
