View Full Version : Wrenchin' party this weekend?

I'm gonna be doing a marathon engine swap starting Friday with some other minor projects thru the weekend. If you're bored - I could use an extra pair of hands movin' motors around and what not.......
The operating room:
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1011867.jpg
Picked up this sweet little '00 on the cheap today:
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1011855.jpg
It has a nasty/angry piston or something banging away in it. But otherwise, it's a nice little Classic with the off-road package (armor/hooks) towing package (hitch, trans cooler) new 3-row radiator, and 16" alloys. It came from Michigan so it's got a couple little rust spots (top of the a-pilars and pass. rear window), nothing bad - but they sure know how to undercoat..... holy crap.
I had 'Castle's old '00 still sitting at my yard - nice engine in it....... :dunno: figure I'd get to swapping things around! :D
Oh and if you need any parts, I'll be parting out that blue '00 and I have a '91 here too that needs picked over!

Must be over your sickness....................I didn't see a Quarantined on the door there in the pic.
I can come over and help.............although you would not get anything done, cause of course I would talk your ear off :D
...........nah...........I actually have to work Saturday. Beginning of the year is the worst cause the first three months we work Saturdays to make sure books and files are good as we get surveyed by Community Center Boards for Quality of services..........big ole pain in the butt!
Good luck wrenching and no breaking anything!

LOL! I wouldn't expect anything less....... :D
I'm gonna be wrenchin' on these rigs Saturday and Sunday. Stop by whenever.
I'm actually gonna time the transplant process. From the time I start to remove the donor to the time it's in the recipient and running.
Anyone wanna start a pool? :D

hardeeharr.. :) Been thinking of doing a swap in my 88, yours'll be good practice. You got air? I'll bring some stuff down and we'll burn through it quick-like.
This style fitting?

I would come up but I don't think I should be driving too far with a ripped up shackle box and 1 engine mout missing most of the rubber.:D
YELLAHEEP
January 22nd, 2009, 22:02
Yeah that fitting....... but I only have one hose and one hose outlet on the compressor. Better just limber up your wrists...... :D
BTW, dunno if you grasped it, but this is just a '00 to '00 swap, not the MJ update project......
This will be about as straight forward as it gets - just unplug, remove, plug in and play!
If we get to that point, you could tear down the bad engine just for fun to see what went south. It's really an odd noise - like there's a bad valve and a hole in the piston, but there's no air pressure building up in the crank case, nor is there any air or oil in the coolant. A dealership told the previous owner that there was a hole in the "thin side" of the #2 cylinder wall....... I'd think I could feel that by removing the oil cap and holding my hand over the filler hole.... but I get nothing.

I'll likely pop in on Sunday and drop off your tracbar brace, but not sure if the schedule will allow much wrenching...

So is this a fix and sell rig or are you going to keep it and swap over the lift from your current DD xj?
Nice find I love me those silver XJ's.

Fix and flip. I no longer have a DD XJ.
I'd definitely consider keeping this one, but it's got way too much undercoating and gooey stuff sprayed into the seams, panels and whatnot. There's plenty of clean Colorado rigs out there - I'll find me a keeper soon enough - that is IF I don't end up keeping the MJ once it's built up...... :D

What happend to that black XJ?
Went to it's new owner in Wheat Ridge back in November.
My wife had been unemployed since this past October, I sold it and my GTO to stay on top of our bills until she could find work. She just started her new job this week........ so yeah, we spent pretty much all of what I had invested in those two cars...... oh well, ya do what you gotta do right?

Or will you be around today?

I hear ya I sold one of my old muscel cars to stay afflote on bills when I got laid off from the wonderfull world of IT.
68 ElCameno Ya it wasn't the coolest car of my fleet but it was fast and fun and could haul parts in it.

Ok, so I'm not a huge fan of the changes under the hood that are found on '00 XJ's..........
Primarilly the AC system, fuel evap system and exhaust. I fought rusty nuts/bolts all afternoon on the donor rig's exhaust. The entire system is bolt-together. Lots of flanges! Stripped 2 nuts and one bolt.....
Then I went to test the AC system in the donor to see if it was still charged - briefly pressed on the schrader valve on the line near the compressor - pin fell straight in - nothing in the system. Obviously the schrader valve went bad...... ok, that can happen I suppose. Made it easy to tear everything apart anyway without the system needing evacuated.
Then went to the other '00. Pressed the schrader valve and yeah, there was plenty of R134a in the system...... and the damn schrader valve stuck down! I tried to bring it back up and closed with a needle nose pliers...... no dice, something came apart in the seal. So...... I now have TWO evacuated AC systems.......
And lastly..... the retarded fuel evap system. Jeep moved the canister from the engine bay to under the XJ just ahead of the fuel tank. Ok, whatever. But what the hell is it with running the vent tube all the way back up the frame rail on the driver's side, then up the firewall near the intake, then crossing DIRECTLY OVER THE BELLHOUSING TO THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE FIREWALL! That fawkin' 1" diameter breather tube covers what little access there is to those DAMN Torx head bolts on the top of the bellhousing! :smsoap: Who the fawk designed that evap system?!?!?!? Why does it have to cross over the bell housing!
Sheesh.
:D

Nope. These newer XJ's just don't cooperate like the older ones......
I still need to pull the engine out of the silver one - Keifer got a good start at getting it disconnected/parts pulled from it, we'll just need to finish disconnecting the harness, exhaust, bellhousing bolts, etc.
Hell, I'm out of garage space what with all the parts pulled and layin' around.... I'm probably gonna have to roll the blue one out of the garage and piss off the neighbors for a day or two just so I have some room to work.....
Realistically - this project will likely continue into next weekend. These cold temps really slow me down! :D

You're using the Torx head socket for those right?
The best way to get at those is from under the XJ. I usually remove the front drive shaft to allow more access, then use the longest extensions you can get your hands on and a universal joint at the end with the socket on it. Maneuver that long extension up along the bell housing and fit it onto the bolt head and bust it loose.

Troy, I come over here to check the progress of your MJ project and you're working on a different project??
What's up with the MJ?
YELLAHEEP
January 27th, 2009, 19:56
Well, I gotta flip this '00 rig in order to have some scratch to throw at the MJ brutha!
MJ is a driver now, but the exhaust was full of holes and wouldn't pass emissions visual inspection - and probably wouldn't pass the sniffer since it smells rich at idle anyway.
So, I'm sitting on it for now - and keeping my eye out for a '98+ hit hard in the rear as the donor for the project.

Sure! The weather looks like it'll be decent too.
I'll definitely be able to use a spare set of hands when it comes time to line up the engine/trans during install, then turning the crank while lining up the converter to the flex plate.
During the in-between time, you'd be more than welcome to remove that e-brake set up from the blue one that you wanted.....

This project will likely extend into Sunday - if the silver XJ isn't already running by then, I'll be finishing it up - and if it's done, I'll be pulling the last of the parts off the blue one or the '91 on the side of the house.
There's always something going on over here......... :looney:

IT'S ALIVE!
After about 20 hours of wrenchin'......... It's done! Wheew. I don't suppose the time it took is too bad considering I put two complete XJ's in the garage, removed the entire drivetrain and exhaust from one and installed it into the other. I'm almost convinced that it'd been quicker just to have left the engine/trans together and swapped 'em rather than keeping the trans in the silver one and all the fiddling it took to get it lined up. :dunno:
Took it for a drive - and it severely overheated. Top hose was cold so I guess I'll swap out the t-stat. I think the pass. front axle shaft has a bad/seized u-joint too. Nasty howl/vibration and a wobble feeling in the steering wheel on sharp turns.
Had to swap the entire exhaust system from the blue one too.
I'll get the BFG's mounted later this week and the front axle issue fixed, then an e-test and it's DONE!
Thanks Keifer for the help brutha!
