Not for Slick Rick, but then it is all relative. I am willing to do H2H this time I am not sure why I chickened out last time. Any how, I am game for anything, I just not familiar enough with the area. I can lead a trail if you get me to the trail head.

If my rig is still alive and fully operational on day 3, I fittin to run H2H too.

Hey Crash, Jump This is Rick the Sand Lizard from California :looser:. He actually knows the trails and from what I was told he even dragged ass through H2H in something very slightly resembling an XJ. Don't pay him no mind. If you want to meet him in person, stop by the :flame: around midnight, he'll be liquored up talking about hemorhoids :moon:

Im definately in for H2H again. It was super fun last year & my junk works even better now.
So what else around there is the level of H2H, or slightly harder??

I haven't done Elvis, Id like to run that with the group if its run. Not hard enough to break everyone but should have enough challenge to be fun.
Martinez cabin I havent done the whole loop only the rock garden, also not too difficult.
Box canyon is a must for the group that does the cabin. Really nice AZ scenery.
Lower and Upper Ajax would be good for the group. the lower part is easier, Those that dont want to continue can take the road pull out. those willing can do the extension third part as well.
The cokeovens "road" could be done by a group of the stockers, I even found it too boring and bumpy for one of my first trips out there.
H2H, woodies, X would be good for the less body damage concerned group.
Others trails would require raised gas tank and rear stretch to have enough departure angle to hit the steep falls. Or winch and drag technique.

Elvis (easier the H2H as Ive heard)
Upper Ajax Shorter but similar to H2H
X Much more body contact intensive then H2H very short.
WW First gate keeper is gnarly deeper then the H2H notch. The rest has some optional stuff overall easier then H2H (IF?) you make it through the first 10 feet.
Four other trails much Harder would require body damage and winch lines for most. Probably not a good option for this group, but it depends on what you bring.

I think we ran upper and lower Ajax last year, but cant be certain. I know there was a group that did the coke ovens. I think we also did woodpecker and a few of us did H2H.
Im definately interested in running some different stuff from last year. The scenery is amazing, so im sure wherever we are lead to will be great!

I have a winch & im definately not concerned about body damage. Most of the trails at JV have already left their mark. :D
i like challenging stuff but i have enough sence to know when something is over my rigs capabilities. Guess we'll see how things pan out when i get there.
Man, i cant wait!!

X2
X = guaranteed body damage in a full bodied rig. Ask me how I know :D But it's a fun short trail. I haven't seen it recently, but I couldn't see a way to avoid tagging the right rear.
Axle Alley is a good more difficult trail. Not much body damage potential, but it got it's name for a reason. Good falls to climb so 35's and ground clearance are pretty much necessary. The big fall is doable with an XJ wheelbase on the right line.

I believe that's Willow Springs. It's east of Phx. The trail is gated and requires a permit from the National Forest District. Which is cool becasue it keeps the stackers and trash out. That trail is very scenic and fun to run. Here's some pic's I found:

Elvis is much easier than h2h. I've ran it several times. There are a couple optional lines that makes it more interesting overall is pretty easy. I would really like to do h2h again and have never done x but it sounds like a lot of fun. I don't have a winch, but I'm also not full bodied so it should be fine. Looking forward to running with you guys.

Not planning April, be at EJS in Moab. Nothing fun in May, wife wants Hawaii.Trying to put it together for SoCal Jambo 3/13 though, but may just stay on Phoenix & see if I can get those AZ guys to show me some of their wheelin. And hay, I was a great hard working dentist for 40 years to be able to wheel around now.

What you called "The Woodys" you mean the woodpeckers lower and upper.
If X is out for you so is WW, I saw it bend and dent cages last time a guy got stuck in it. Usually the body will need a high lift on it to get it unwedged then a winch to drag it out.

cdhowell and I ran X with a buddy not long ago with no damage. It is a narrow, steep, short trail.
Axle Alley- couple of stretched TJs just recently rolled nose over trying to do the last fall. Fortunately they were full caged. They had not pulled line.
Does anyone know OD or BM? I don't know where they are. I've seen a few pics.

Yes, OD has a very tight squeez and one AA size fall. I really like that trail, real short too.
BM is chill till the end, uphill sideways notch. I broke an alloy 35spline stub going up it last time. Its a real PITA for built rigs, I have tube dents from it, not fun just a PITA. Going down it is fun, that eliminates the bound up broke factor.

I'm going to guess that those trails would be rated 4.5+? You interested in leading folks through there? I don't know if anyone else knows them.
I'm going to try and have a friend (built buggy) show me the trailheads but I'm not built for them.

I can lead a run on OD.
BM Im not interested in leading, but well see.
Some suggestions
Hard trail list 1:
WW, AA, X, OD
Hard trail list 2:
LW, UW, H2H, UA
list 1 is harder then list 2.
Id recommend no more then 8 rigs for list 2 and no more then 6 for list 1.
If we have more we would need to be choosie on which trails to skip.

BM can get ugly,
This was a busted Atlas output shaft, took three winches and a high lift to get it un stuck. Its not something you can just winch up if you get stuck.

A comp buggy broke a 9in ring and pinnion.
A toyota buggie severly bent a main leaf.
I think only three of us got up it then we went back down to drag out the carnage.
Last Time I ran it my buddie broke his d300 output yoke. I riped a brake line and a 35 spline alloy d60 shaft.

With the camp sight location specified those trail orders I had in mind would not be ideal.
The AA exit road to WW then back to camp at Box canyon is a LONG drive, Might need to drop WW off the list.
Hard trail list 1:
OD, X, AA
Hard trail list 2: (LW is a long ASS drive from camp at BOX canyon the trails continue North east further from camp. UA ends very far from camp, Most of the day would be on the dirt roads getting to and from camp. Might be only able to do two of the 4 due to Time)
UW, H2H

February 10th, 2009, 11:57
You're right, the trails are a long ways from camp, and that is something the BOD agonized about prior to selecting the current site. The alternative was to camp on ASTL in violation of the ASTL rules and regs and that was not an acceptable alternative.

Not a problem. All trails can be reached through Box Canyon you do not need to be on the highway. It's just a little further than if we camped where we were camped last year

Hey guys, howdy!
Noob here, just joined this forum and thinking of joining in the fun, however I would like to understand whether or not most everyone who is going will be doing the harder stuff, or if there is a group of guys who will be doing some of the easy stuff as well.
My XJ is my daily driver, wanna have some fun without breaking anything and denting it up.
Also, I have a buddy with a new Wrangler, is this outing limited to XJs only?
Thanks in advance!

Well the majority will be XJ's, but as longest he is a cool guy anybody is welcomed. We are going to offer many trails from scenic to extreme. You honestly dont have to worry, about banging up your Heep. Also Our good runs will have bypasses, and we have done them with stock rigs too.

Hey man - thanks for that info -
Quick question regarding the trails for me and my rig - the previous owner put on 30" tires with no lift, and as they are slightly oversized, will I have issues with rub and scraping if I try to do some of the fun stuff, the more difficult trails?
