View Full Version : Another newbie transmission question

I have a 96 sport with the aw4 trans. I had a plastic part pop off of the side of the trans, and lost almost all of the fluid. We put the plastic piece back in, along with the plunger and spring underneath it. Plus, put in a new snap ring. We refilled the trans with fluid, and I drove it home. Now, I have no reverse. I have all the forward gears, just no reverse. The fluid was dark, and burnt. I just changed the fluid, and still no reverse. Before we put in the spare trans from the parts rig, is there anything I should check or try out? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I take it that I'm dead in the water, and need to pull the trans?

correct ajustment. did you drive it with no fluid?

No. We had just finished working on the rear diff, and I took it through the "test track" on my friend's property. I completed the loop, and was headed out when they noticed I had a nasty leak. I turned the jeep off, and we discovered the missing pieces. I drove home with a full trans. I'm just looking for stuff to check before we pull it. I'm sure I just killed an otherwise sturdy trans. I had reverse when I left his garage, I had no reverse in my driveway. I take it I have a rebuildable core trans at this point.

Btw, I have all my forward gears. In "d", "3", and "2-1". Nothing happens in "r".

Yes. The snap ring let go.

Maybe you missed a part or two. Here's the exploded view.

Hey, thanks. I'll check that before we pull the trans. With any luck, we can salvage it. If not, oh well, the parts rig gets chopped up. I can't believe that I destroyed an Aw4 due to not properly seating a snap ring. Thanks for the schematic:worship:

Just an update. We got the trans to shift into reverse again. It would go into gear, but it would slip. We installed the servo piston improperly the first time. We fried reverse. Ooops. Live and learn, I guess. The spare trans went in, and it functions properly. Thanks for the info.
