air shocks

I have a 2000 XJ and am lookin at building my own b-pack for the rear leafs, my buddy, who is an auto mech. suggested installing air ride shocks which can be "pumped up" to lift the rear end, will this work? pros and cons please. Thanks for your time.

Pro: Real simple.

Con: All the weight you take off the springs gets transferred to the shock mounting points on the chassis. Sooner(probably) or later, you're going to punch a shock through the floor.
