Was out wheeling this weekend and came upon a loose, sandy hill, while attemping to climb the hill in both 4H and 4L I noticed that the engine would wind up but no power was being sent to the wheels. Could it be a problem w/ the torque converter? I'm definitely not a genius when it comes to transmissions so take it easy on me. thanks, Judd 91, 4.0, AW4, 231, D44-9", 4.88, 37's

Are you sure no power was going to the wheels? Or was power going to the wheels that were spinning, and the other wheels were just sitting there?
Basically, I guess I'm asking if you're locked or if you run open diffs.
If the tranny runs okay on the street, there's no reason to suspect that it suddenly doesn't like to work off-road. How about the transfer case? How's the chain? Is the linkage adjusted? Maybe you hit Neutral instead of 4WD?
Lastly, how did you determine that no power was going to the wheels? Did someone observe the wheels were not turning when the engine revved up, or was it just that you weren't moving? Loose, sandy stuff is tough to grab hold of, so maybe your tires were just spinning.
Last idea -- have you checked the level of the transmission fluid recently? If it's low, maybe being on an incline caused cavitation, resulting in no drive.
All guesses ... I wasn't there.

I have open diffs. I know the tires weren't moving because my buddy was watching for me. No tires moving, no d shafts moving. Guess it could be caused by cavitation? Tried it in both 4L and 4H. Same results. How hard is it to install a torque converter? thanks

The hard part in installing a torque converted is getting to it. You must disconnect the tranny from the engine to get to the converter. It is really a straight forward bolt off bolt on thing.

DON'T THINK ITS THE TORQ CONV. I THINK ITS IN THE T CASE. DOES IT STILL DRIVE WHEN NOT IN 4H OR 4L?

That post was in '03. His rig was probably turned in for cash for clunkers by now :D
