how to tell the difference between 27 or 29 in 8.25

is there any markings on the housing, or is the only difference in the axle shafts themselves?

open it up and count the splines on the shaft, no other way. what year do you have? 96.5+ is 29, earlier is 27.

If it is a 96, only way I know is to pull a shaft. 97+, pretty sure it will be a 29.

im looking to buy one, and the guy who is selling it had parted out 2 XJs one 98, and one 96... sold one of the axles, but couldnt remember which one (he doesnt have the jeeps)

Just gotta pull a shaft man. 1/2" socket for the cover bolts, 5/16" wrench for the cross pin bolt.
