View Full Version : Whats up with Black Rockcrawlers?

Now I've been Jeeping for a day or two, but I just don't understand.

What is the allure of having Black "rock-krawlers". Hell, phony beadlocks for that matter too...

It seems like anyone that wants to look like a hardcore wheeler has a set.....along with a brushguard....

Run what ya brung....

Cheap black steelies... $36 each. Custom polished bling... $100+ each. In the case of me and my wallet it was all about simple mathematics. Just my .02

I bought them because they were cheap...

Granted that was three years ago and I've JUST put one of my five new tires on one of them :D

Aluminum wheels crack and can get very damaged if you wheel on the rocks, steelies will just bend around the lip usually if you hit them HARD. You can always hammer that bent spot back down, can't say the same for a cracked aluminum wheel.

Plus cost is also something to consider. You can get a set of 15x8 Black Steelies for around $200 usually, even less if you buy used. Other wheels can go for $100+ and up.

Aluminum wheels do have a major upside - they're a lot lighter. If it wasn't for the shoestring budget I'd march out and buy a set of aluminum wheels rihgt now.

actually the fake beadlocks are awesome. i used to hate e'm but i bought a set that came with some tires i needed and they are good for one thing, they have protected the bead as well as the bead lip of the rim, i rub them on the rocks often and the fake rings have saved me many many times. from tearing up the rim to tire surface

If I am willing to spend close to $3000 on my suspension, $800 for my wheels doesn't seem like to big a deal. It just meant that I got them later instead of RIGHT NOW. It's amazing the things you can afford when you save for a bit..................:dunno:

If money was the reason, why not use stock steelies, or for that matter, white wagon wheels?

Methinks it is to look cool to the unknowing.

Waiting for the "Chrome won't get you home" crowd to pipe in.

why not just look around and try and find a used pair of better rims. I went on craigslist and picked me up a set og Mickey Thompson Classic IIs, those look real nice with my gray XJ.

Ding Ding Ding .........we have a winner Bob, tell him what he's won.

This is the real reason why I run them, and they are getting the winter AT tires put on after the month's end trail ride. Gonna build a set of DIY bead locks over the winter.

My friend bought Rock Crawlers against my advice 2 years ago. After two summers of deep rocks, 3 of 4 are bent, two with bent centers. He just bought a set of nice aluminum wheels.

The myth of aluminum wheels cracking and failing cracks me up. We're not talking about 30 year old porous castings. Modern aluminum wheels are lighter, stronger and mroe durable than their steel counterparts. Yes, the initial cost is higher, but having to buy 2 or 3 sets of steelies to keep straight wheels on your rig pays for the alloys in about 6 years.

I have CenterLine Tel-Stars on mine. Its unreal how much lighter a billet aluminum wheel is compared to a steel wheel. The only upside to the wieght of the steel wheels is that the wieght is in the right spot...the bottom.

The myth of aluminum wheels cracking and failing cracks me up.

I've seen 3 factory 15x8 canyon TJ wheels crack and break beads. On the same trails as I run my street lock with no problems. But that migh have something to do with the tire he runs, 35x10.5 SSR's........I still don't understand that pizza cutter thing.

Why can't I have crappy black steelies for my crappy white junk?
I have literally abused mine and they are completely bent to fu*k, but they still hold air and they still work great at .25mph.
Why can't I swap out a $50, two year old peice of mangled booger with a $50 replacement?
Maybe when I give a sh*t about appearances, I'll start buying Al.
Until then, You'll see my junk with beaten, bent, and rusted dubs.

Blingy chrome/aluminum crap on cars is teh ghey, IMHO. I hate it and can't wait to get rid of all of it on my junk. Mirrors, bumpers, grill, windshield trim, alloy wheels all have to go :puke:

The only exception of course is cars *made* of aluminum, they look pretty neat brushed out.

x2 on the strength as well. Even high pressure cast Al alloy is pretty brittle. And of course putting $1200 worth of forged wheels on an $1100 jeep would be retarded ... :looney:

Be glad you didn't get them.
As an installer, we had to be more careful with those Teflon coated wheels, than with any other.
If we weren't mindful, there was even the chance of scratching off that micro-thin coating, just taking them out of the box.
I don't even want to think of what a rock or tree branch would do.

I spent $60 each on chrome soft 8's. I did it because that is what I like ... and what I wanted to put on my Jeep.

It's my Jeep, my money, and my preference. I got over worrying about what others think a long time ago. I have found I'm much more satisfied that way.

I run Mickey Thompson hot forged "Challenger" Aluminum rims...

I have the same rims in 2 different widths and bolt patterns...

I like the way they look...

I love the way they've held up for me...

I obviously don't give a fawk what my rig looks like to anyone else...

and unless you're running 20" spinners...

it shouldn't make any difference around these parts.

I don't much care for the teflon stuff, stuipd gimick that means nothing...

I wouldn't run those in the rocks anyway, too pretty!

One of these days I will need to get aluminum wheels though. 35's on steel rims are much heavier than 31's on steel rims! Good thing I don't dig on roof top tire placement!

Actually, Blkxjkrawler, I think GI John was talking about you.

It actually started with a fellow soldier that came up to me a few days after he bought a new TJ.

He wanted to go with a 6" longarm and 35's....no wheeling experience whatsoever.

I finally talked him into reality and he settled on a BB, 31's, and......drum roll please...Black rock crawlers.

Paid 1200.00 for it too, and thought he got a great deal.

I figure that the aluminum wheels will hold up to more abuse than the cheap steelies. I have taken two cheap steelies to the dump for being hammered out of round. Plus they like to shed the tire bead too easy for my liking. FWIW I only have $265 into five AR alloys... not that much more than steel.

Rock rash? Bah... if one is worried about rock rash on their Jeep, they need to stick to 4wheeling the speed-bumps at their local high school.

I do use cheap steel wagon wheels (painted a wicked shade of dark charcoal metallic and flying the blingin chrome hub covers) with my street tires, but for off-highway use, gotta be alloys for me.

YMMV
