thinking about getting some work (cruise controls broke) done on my 2000xj.
i usually take it to my mechanic who i trust and seems to have fair prices (don't know the rate though).
what would be a hourly difference between a dealership and a private owned shop?

You might have to call them up and ask...

Around here, 75.00 an hour is average for private. After spending some time at the dealership the last couple of days, I would have to say 90-105 the average, but that a guess looking at couple of fellow's bills.. But then I did work on a guys Saturn yesterday, I "nailed" him 185$ parts and labor, and he was quoted from the "shop" up the street $395+tax parts and labor for the same work...:dunno:

At one point in my life I worked at a dealership (though not a mechanic). I now work at a business that sells to many local repair shops every day. If you have a trusted mechanic, you have a valuable asset. Some dealerships do have good service departments but I was completely unimpressed with the techs at the (5 star) dealer where I worked (2002). See if your mechanic can refer you to someone else if he is not able to fix the problem.
