How hard is it to change the front stock to a 4-rail handguard? I know the Charles Daly I have has the regular stock and they say a tool (no, not Purple Cherokee...) made for it is best , but it's brand new and I want to keep it that way. I have the chance to buy this one but I hate the handguard.I want one like this:

You have to remove the flash hider...then the pins holding the gas block in...then remove the gas block...then with the right tool (spanner wrench), take the float tube off. You'll REALLY want to have an upper receiver vice block to hold it. Makes things easier and eliminates the risk of tweaking the upper receiver.

Then when you put your replacement rail on, you want to make sure you've got LOCTITE for all the screws...or it'll come apart on you when you don't want it to. :D If you get a two-piece rail, you'll need a delta ring (the standard spring loaded ring) to hold it together.

If you don't want to do all that work, you should be able to take the upper to a gun smith who would probably do it for a relatively small fee.

What build is that rifle? I can't tell from the small pics.

I did just get a Charles Daly Defense AR for Christmas this morning, but want another with the detachable handle. I like optics. :cheers: I know I can put some on the handle of my CD, but I really don't want it that high.

If you haven't worked on them before, the AR is a great place to learn how to mess with guns.

Hang out on www.ar15.com, especially in the Build it yourself forum, do a lot of reading and you will learn everything you need to know.

Don't panic because it is Pirate, the Outdoor Sports and Recreation forum is relatively flame-free and has some serious gun-nuts (I mean that in a good way) that post - USMCDoc14 and AlohaRover being two of the best. Do a lot of searching there and then ask any additional questions you have. There are several part-time gunsmiths as well that do some amazing work.

Really, the AR platform is like tinkertoys for grownups. A few basic tools and some searching, and you'll be good to go. I've built two (so far) from boxes of parts and haven't shot my eye out yet.

Yeah, gas tube comes off too. :D

And shipping it off to one of the builders is pretty foolish right now if you want to plan on using the thing within the next 6 months.

UPDATE!!!

I have been buying some "goodies" for the AR. I have so far got a front handguard with 4 rails ( also with rubber covers to keep them comfy) and a handle quick-mount picatinny rail sight for my holographic sight. Have not tried the sight out yet, as the battery was DOA so he's sending me another one.

Also have a green dot laser, foregrip, flashlight and bipod ordered. I know it will be heavy, but I may not keep the parts on it. I have a new DPMS complete lower already with a Bushmaster upper on order (16 week wait ...) so I will make one a long range rifle and the other the "up close and personal version ;) . I have a collasable stock on that lower now, I may switch them, dunno yet.

Anyway, it's about a $2000.00 lego system right now, and I'm lovin' it! :party:
