View Full Version : I got a XJ for free.

So my mom is buying me an XJ and i went to see it last night.

Its 94 , 4.0 , 5 speed, 2 door, teal color.

The good: Nice interior, carpet is good, no rust underneath or on the body which is amazing considering its 12 years old and has spent its life in Rhode Island through the winters, paint is beautiful, everything works great on it. ICE cold A/C . 4 New tires. Its a 5 speed, damn they are hard to find around here. Low low miles considering its age

The bad: Dummy guages that i plan to swap out and put in the better guages with a tach. Carpet needs a cleaning. Needs a new exsust, but i just put one on my 93 xj and its only 5 days old so ill just swap them. Headliner is sagging bad and that will drive me nuts. And finally, the passenger side door was bumped into at at like 3 mph, and there is a tiny dent at the bottem of the door. Not noticable at all, but the door opens rough. I was told its very fixable. Rear Bumper as a tiny tiny bit of surface rust that can be easily sanded off and painted.

Since its free for me, i guess thats a great friggen' deal, considering my current XJ is a rust bucket, no floors, no interior, its a peice.

I plan on putting a 4.5" lift with 33's on it.

must be nice to have mom buy you cars. how about doing the "adult" thing and get a job so you can start paying her back???

anyways........sounds nice...manuals are hard to find. i haven't seen one yet. wish i had one myself. for rust, you might want to crawl all the way under the jeep and check directly underneat the passenger and driver floorboard and front seats. you might also want to try and carefully pull the section of carpet right in front or below the front seats. 90% of the time that's where they start rotting.

got any pics???

I did crawl under. I had a bad experience with my last jeep being competly rotted, so this time i crawled under the jeep and did a complete inspection. No rust, and it had been undercoated with a rubbeized material. I also did pull up the carpet and check for rust and there was none.

Being 17, i guess you could sorta call me an adult, and I do have a job, but she said i dont have to pay her back. She saw how bad my XJ was with no floors and whatnot and she felt bad. Also, her and her boyfriend recently won a 20,000 dollar motorcycle and sold it for its value, so she decided she wanted to buy me a jeep. And for the record, i have bought 2 vehicles already on my own.

Ill have pics friday.

Dupont makes the paint for that Teal color, DC no longer stocks it, I got the last two spray cans in the system last summer for one of our TJ's. :D I flat out LOVE that color despite my daughter calling it our Barbie jeep.... It came with a white soft top and unfortunately I could not get a replacement in that color.

The good : Mommy bought me a rig, and it costed me nothing.

The Bad : It needs some attention, and I will have to pay money to get it fixed. "Oh MOM!"

You can hear it now can't you?

Sounds great! Make sure you check under the cargo carpet and the rear seat wells also for rust. Don't neglect changing all yer fluids right away as well, since winter is coming soon!

Make sure you do something nice for your mom. Like not going all petulent when she asks you to do chores!

(I've got my own 17 year-old!)

show me a kid that had his parents buy them a car, that actually got treated WELL.

Out of 100 I bet you find 5. The other 95 I bought and put in a junkyard, because they got the SH*T beat outta of them.

Mommy taught me to be responsible for myself... a lesson many kids today should learn, and sadly don't.

I'll buy my kid a car if I can afford when he's that age, but when he's being an asshat I will take that car quicker than anything and if he doesn't pay his ALL OF HIS OWN insurance it'll be parked.

Letting him earn the car and when he's stupid or messes up and the car is gone will teach another good lesson too.

But I agree w/ you to a point.

GIVE YOUR MOTHER A HUG AND DON'T BE AN ASSHAT!! She did NOT have to do that.

A few of you sound like a bunch of jealous gossipy bitches - give the kid a break, let him enjoy his new XJ and good fortune - go wrench on yer junk or sumpthin...... :D

I see your point, and your correct...most vehicles given to kids will probably be abused.

IF...

Said parent doesnt stay on top of the kid and make sure he/she keeps up on maintenance etc. It's my belief that if you give a child a vehicle....your partly responsible for it...you cant just wipe your hands clean and forget about it. Guess it all starts with cleaning up their toys...putting their bike in the garage etc.

My son's YJ keeps improving. And i make sure it gets the attention it needs.

Somewhat off topic but...
The wife and I actually had this very conversation a while back. The plan for us is to go the same route both of our parents did. Finical assisatance was given for the initial purchase of the ride. A job will be had by the kids, gotta make a car (I mean Jeep:D) payment. Loan will be taken out in thier name. General maintaince, oil changes and such will be taken care of by the child as well as fuel. Now Insurance will be on mom and pop. Good student discount is a must. If grades drop enough the discount is lost, keys go bye bye except to and from work. That's the way I had it and I feel I learned alot of different things from it.
Too many kids get every thing handed to them on a silver platter. Most, ....I said most are ungratefull little bieatches, that don't realize how good they have it. Responsibility needs to be taught and silver platters melted down. I know a few that are now, no longer of school age (out of collage 2-3+ years) that still rely on mommy and daddy for pretty much everything.

93_xj, I'm with Lou.
Hug your mom and tell her you love her. Treat that XJ like your mom would want you too. Take good care of it to show her your apperciation.

Ok, I'm done now.

It takes a village. There are alot of different ways to teach kids. Giving a kid a car as noted above can be an opportunity to learn responsibility or it can turn into a disaster. There were several accidents a couple of years ago here. I remember one where a high school girl who had been given a BMW by her single parent mother, was out joy-riding with her friends and wrapped it around a tree killing two of the kids and permanenetly injuring herself and one of her passengers. The ignoramous mother who bought the girl the car was quoted in the local newspaper that she had bought the BMW for her daughter because she understood it was a safe car. As far as I'm concerned that mother should have been charged with manslaughter. Being a responsible parent means giving kids opportunities to stretch and learn without letting go of the rope until they are ready. Buying a responsible kid a Jeep under the right circumstances with the appropriate supervision and rules does not equate to a spoiled brat. A parent that buys a kid a vehicle without any oversight however is nothing more than negligent.

I bought each of my daughters cars when they got their license. That was dependant on them getting all A's in school and having a job. I spent $1000. If they wanted nicer, they had to add money they made on their jobs. I did paint a few and do some body work to make them nicer, but they paid their own insurance and gas.

All I can say to the young man is take care of your vehicle. Just saying thanks is cheap, show it by taking care of it. Also, welcome to NAXJA. Don't let the riff raff around here give you too much grief.

I remember that my folks lent me the money for my first car, but I had to pay it back in regular installments from my paycheck (the car was too good a deal to pass up and I did not have the $$$ built up yet)

I was on their insurance, but had to pay my part of the cost.

Maintenance was my problem, but dad was always there to teach and lend a hand.

And they provided 1 tank of gas a month to cover whatvere errands I ran for them (taking my brother places, etc)

Years later, my father came into some $$$ and gave my brother and I each jeeps. We had learned our responsibility by this time in his eyes. He did not HAVE to do it, but he wanted to...

That sounds like the situation here. So, enjoy your jeep...and continue to prove tour respect and responsibility to your mother. She did not have to do it......

My mom hooked me up when i was 17. My parents are divorced and my dad and I got into it and he ended up taking my Jeep. My mom showed up at school a week later and picked me up in my new (to me) 95 xj. Coolest thing anybodys ever done for me. She doesnt have alot of money and I know that....it made me appreciate it that much more. After I graduated and got my avalanche, I sold the jeep for $250 more than she paid for it and handed her an envelope of cash. Tell your mom you love her, kid. You cant say it enough.
