starter help needed ASAP

ok, I am a noob and this is my question:
I think my starter is kaput... key in - battery power
and nothing... no woooow wooooow woooow / clicking / nada / zip

is it gone dead?:doh:

try to jump the posts on the starter and see if it works. If that works then turn it back off and try to start in neutral.

You could also try jumping from another vehicle to your battery.

Give it a couple good wacks with a 2x4.. if it works after that you should probably start looking for a new one.

if you do end up having to get a new one dont forget about the core return. and damn $180 (<--USD?) is expensive

check to see if your reverse lights work. if not its probably the neutral safety switch

thats with a core return... $311 CDN from Jeep with no core return...
$180 CDN with the core return ($58) from NAPA

Are you sure it's not the starter solenoid? Easy enough to check, and A LOT cheaper than new starter. Best done w/2 people and a good length of cable(jumpers work). Jump straight from batt. to starter post FROM solenoid to starter (hit starter side).

could be... but the core is at NAPA and and it's -16 out... the started is changed and I'm warm now... and getting ready for the 35 mile commute... as per what the FSM both are supposed to be changed out as a "unit."

Could / should they be changed separately???



Ps. I was cold and cranky...

They sell just solenoids. Swapped only solenoid on mine. It's an '89 (RENIX) though, dunno if/how things changed from then to '96.
