Okay Yes or No...

Isn't it well known that pre 1997 XJs can be lifted higher without getting vibes unlike a 97+ XJ?

I don't know, I only have a pre 97 XJ!!!

Kinda hard to answer unless you have experience with both.

Are you establishing an appeal to authority?

:D

Regardless of the year. The short tailcone 231's present less vibe issues on lifts than the long tailcone 231's. It is possible to find a 97 with the short tailcone and a 96 with the long...

Does that answer your poll question?

:D

I voted yes, but it's purely based on what I've been told.

i got a 95 with 3" lift, and it's had slight vibes and bad growls since i installed the lift. so i'm installing a SYE this weekend.

I have a 97 with 6.5" of lift and no SYE. No vibes either. I had a 95 with 4.5" of lift and the driveshaft yokes were bound up just sitting there. Both were 4.0, automatic, 231. go figure.

I have a 96 with 4ish" and an 01 with a BB. Hard to compare b/c the lift was apples to oranges. The 96 got SYE and the 01 got TC drop. I was a bit surprised at how much the 01 vibed with that little of a lift though.

Couldn't tell ya. I bought the sye for my '99 at the same time I bought the lift, I didn't half ass it. Increasing the angle puts more stress on the whole setup. Even if you don't have vibes, it would still be in your interest to put on a sye..............:lecture:

See, I didn't bother with an SYE. I just did a 4" t-case drop. 3" to match my lift and another inch just because I like to overbuild everything...

I have 4inches of lift on a 1998, and a 4inch lift on a 1991 with no vibes on either, I may have just got lucky though

97 with BB and no vibes? friend has a 96 with a BB and got vibes? I think it just depends?

6.5" on a externaltail 231 is scary. output bearing on the tc must be feeling real nice. having had a 88 and now a late model 231 96, the older models are IMO more prone to vibes. even with 4" on my 96, no sye, my gear knob would shake all over the place taking off. parked it, hack and tap'd it, no problems since

From what I read, the output shaft and housing isnt as large on the NV cases as to the NP cases which means more angle on the drive line. But that just waht Ive read.

By the way it's 96-up that the design changed and yes they are more prone to vibs when lifting because the newer design eliminated the slip yoke support bearing/bushing.
