Figured I'd start a thread on my latest project.

I took this '89 Comanche in trade for the trailer I built for Chris (xj-grin). Thought about just fixing it and selling it.... but I'm kinda diggin' the little truck!

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1011796.jpg

It's just a 2wd, 4 banger 5 speed with leaky freeze plugs and noisy valvetrain, but the plan is to source a wrecked '98+ XJ and do a total swap of the drivetrain, electrical, interior, and body (front clip and doors).

So, over a period of time, I hope to turn it into something more like this:

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/Truck264.jpg

First order of business: Fix the freeze plugs and valvetrain and start driving it as is for a while.

Yeah, I'd say the freeze plugs were toast......

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1011812.jpg

Mmmmmmmm, shiny!

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1011813.jpg

Looks like the center one got replaced a while back with a "universal plug" - left it there since it seemed to be doing the job just fine, just gave it a couple turns to snug it up.

Now...... I gotta figure out how to calm down the angry midget with a pair of hammers under the valve cover....... :D

Kinda amazing what a $20 set of Craigslist bling covers will do 'eh?

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1011816.jpg

The engine truely sounds like a 4 cylinder diesel with a noisy injection pump. The valvetrain around cylinder #1 seems to be the loudest, there might be more. :dunno: I pulled the valve cover and removed the #1 cylinder rockers and lifters....... They "seem" fine, no unusual wear, the valve stems looked good too - the engine is actually REALLY clean inside. (Used a telescoping magnet to get 'em out, now I gotta find one of those lifter removal/installation tools.... I can't get 'em back in! :D)

You're building almost exactly what I've been thinking about for some time now. Once I have the garage space restoring and building up an MJ is on my to-do list.

I'm in Lakewood so you're just down the street from me, if you ever need an extra set of hands let me know. Seeing how you attack this one would probably help me later down the line if I ever get my project past the dreaming stage!

yella -- Frank and I were of the opinion that the rattle, while sounding like valve noise, isn't (old big screwdriver to ear trick), but instead is a loose timing chain. I threw the spare (new) timing chain I have in there when you picked it up, though you might need some new "snubbers" too...

I KNEW you'd end up keeping it, you truly have a disease!

YELLAHEEP
December 11th, 2008, 12:14
Yeah, the timing chain is starting to sound more like the issue. Found a couple more posts over on Comanchee Club that suggest it as well.

I removed the distributor cap and turned the crank with a wrench to see if the slack was obvious - not so much, but it's hard to gauge. I guess in my mind I was expecting to see true "slop", but maybe it really doesn't take that much to be "slop".

I've got a new set of gears and chain here as well so I suppose I'll tear that apart and swap the timing set in while I'm at it.

Thats going to be kick A$$ looking. I would be so down for something like that. Have you thought about an extended cab or is that more than you would want to deal with. Just thinking in terms of more space to push that seat back just a bit more. I guess that gets into moving the bed back and frame issues I would guess.

YELLAHEEP
December 11th, 2008, 14:34
Yeah, DJ and I had done quite a bit of discussing what would be involved in extending the cab, but we were looking at just adding the length of a set of 2 door doors. Got to thinking that if one were to take a hard hit '98+ 2 door and cut it at the windshield pilars, then across the floor pan just at the notch where the "B" pillar/door sil meets the floor and pull the rear away.

Then cut the Comanche in the same locations, but leave the unibody frame rails intact up to the lower control arms. Remove the MJ floor pan.

Remove the frame rails under the 2dr section, but leave the floor pan in place.

Roll the two sections together until the doors close on the back of the MJ cab and then take measurements to extend the roof, and the frame rails. Then you'd have to make some box steel sleeves to go into and between the frame rail sections.

Then the hard stuff would be to get all the sections made and welded in place to support everything - the roof being the hardest I imagine.

The reason I won't be doing this kind of project is that I don't have enough experience in unibody work or sheet metal (roof).

But it sure would be cool. DJ has a pic of what the completed project would look like..... he's posted it before in other threads.

Looking like a killer idea there Yella!

I think taking on that extensive of body work to make it sit four should be left to "Body & Paint" experts. ;)

Can not wait to see you get it done just the idea of upgrading the front clip to late model XJ sounds sweat. So are you going to paint it Yellow and call it your permanent replacement ?

Yeah, that's the one. I know the bed has been shortened in the pic, but the cab is basically what I was describing - seems the "easiest" to do outta the bunch that DJ created.

But..... I'm not THAT ambitious with this project. Hell, it'll be amazing if I even get to do the update swap, much less paint and body..... Someone might offer me too much for it and I'll move on to another project.... :D

Ordered the spring-loaded chain tensioner from NAPA to go with my chain kit. They want $38 for the goofy little thing.

Gonna pull it apart tomorrow afternoon....... keeping my fingers crossed.

And I guess I'll have to make something to grab hold of the two lifters I removed in order to get them put back in..... I can't find a tool anywhere.

Just have a budget boost. ZJ coils and spacers in the front. Added an XJ main leaf to the MJ packs. Good for 2 inches of lift. 245/75/16 tires.

Got word a couple of minutes ago that my 97+ fenders are ready. They were red, so a friend had them sandblasted and primered for me. So maybe I'll put the front clip on this weekend.

I was planning on making it a trail rig. But I'll probably keep it a street truck until something "happens" to the XJ.

Well, the angry hammer weilding midget has been evicted! The diesel noise was the timing chain. Got it swapped out today and it runs nice and quiet now.

Ya think this looks a little loose? :D

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1011818.jpg

It's dug in deep into the tensioner and - unfortunately you can't see it in this pic, the link rollers were really worn out - several had cracks in them. I looked at the old and new chains side-by-side and the old one was about 1/8" longer than the new one.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1011819.jpg

Next: See if I can figure out the low rpm mis-fire sputter. I'm hoping that'll also cure the running rich at idle problem. After that, I'm gonna try my luck at an emissions test.........

Gunk. This engine is....... very well insulated with gunk! :D

Shoulda taken it for a power washing before starting these projects..........

Yeah, it does have the dreaded "Penzoil" varnish and a very light crud buildup but overall, it's pretty clean inside considering. I took a valve cover and oil pan off another 4banger I had a while back for a guy needing 'em for his YJ.... the valve cover had a "goo mold" of the rockers and weighed several pounds more than it should...... I'm happy with the varnish. :smile3:

it is a gunk magnet. Everytime I'd hit it with shiny engine bright and powerwash it, it would devlop a new oil/coolant/mystery leak and re-coat itself... I think it likes it, and honestly, I became fearful that the gunk was all that was holding it together!!:repair:

I ran Valvoline 10-30 in it, like I have every car I've ever had (except the current XJ due to stroker/Crane flattappet cam/zinc issues)... I rolled the dice when I bought it and ran some seafoam through it (vac line) -- incredibly nasty smokage, but the bulk of the seals appear to have survived the cleaning (honestly, it leaked so much fluid, it likely would have been hard to tell if it got any worse) :anon:

Did some front end work on it Sunday. After driving it around a bit with the cooling system fixed, I noticed a pretty nasty case of death wobble and an odd knocking/thudding noise in the front end that radiated into the steering wheel when going over speed bumps/pot holes.

All steering components were surprisingly in great shape as were the ball joints and front axle shafts.

The track bar was fubar, so that got swapped with a better used one - no more DW.

The front end thudding actually seems to be a bad steering column. The end of the column where the shaft comes out of the firewall is loose as hell. Like it's got a bad/non-existent bearing. I suppose not having P/S puts more stress on the steering shaft/column. Just gonna leave that like it is for now.

Gave the grimey 2.5L and undercarriage a bath too before the weather rolled in. Kinda purdy now.....

It's just a '97+ dash, with '94- seats, a single DIN radio bezel, and '96- climate controls.

For the most part, I suppose that's accurate. Did Jeep make two different radio bezels? I figured all the '97+ XJ bezels were considered "double din"..... :dunno: I'm also thinking that those door panel arm rests are different - the switch panel is flat, not on the up angle grab handle area.

A person probably could buy that stainless steel trim paint and re-create much of that same look. I wouldn't mind snatching up a rear seat with that fold down arm rest too.....

I think I'm heading the same route you are DJ....... I think my next XJ will need to be a clean Limited.

They are all din and a half. Leave it up to DC to make a size that NO ONE makes an aftermarket piece for. That 2500 Bezel is exclusive to it. But it mounts the same. I remember the door panels now too that you mention it. Another 2500 exclusive part. DC sent Beijing Jeep all of the old '97+ molds, but they still had the older molds as well. So they basically took a little of both, and then made some of their own pieces to finish it all off.

As far as the Limited, you better buy now. They are starting to not exist anymore. And the ones that do pull a premium.

I'm currently on the hunt for a '98 - '01 XJ that's been hard-hit in the rear so that I have a complete donor for the swap. Keeping an eye on Klode's auctions for now.

Once I sell this '00 flipper I have, I'll have the funds to snatch up the donor when I find it.

Parts/accessories I've got for it at this point:
-NP231 with SYE
-ProtoFab Rock Solid front winch bumper
-HP D30 w/4:56's, Rock Crusher diff cover and a locker
-8.25 w/4:56's 29 spline, Crane diff cover
-One-off BIGoffroad MJ leaf packs (on order). Basically an SOA set up with our Military wrap, but no substantial lift over stock leafs.
-Set of orig. alloy wheels from a '99 Classic (can't remember what they're called, charcoal with machined lip, ribbed 5-spoke) might or might not use these....
-Heims, bungs, tube for OTK steering

Looking for:
-RE drop brackets, UCA's, LCA's, coils for 3-4" lift

:twak: ..........thats why the truggy is so dang noisy now, your use of HEIMS everywhere! (Even though you are listing the Rod Ends for steering use I would use normal TRE for steering. I hated my steering with rod ends and wished at the time I could have gone backwards but I drilled out the knuckles, then sold the CJ so I don't care anymore.:D)

USE THESE (http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/Forged-Chromolly-263quot-Ballistic-Joint_p_1636.html) for your control arms; (quote from their website) 100% made in the USA, this joint was manufactured and designed for military use and quality, and meets all MIL-SPEC standards. Forged from solid 4140 steel, the forging is then quenched, tempered and then normalized in a dedicated heat treating facility, providing a yield strength of 208,000 psi and a tensile strength of 238,000 psi! DAMN! ( I think my 5/8 ball 3/4 shank rods ends I used for suspension links were only rated at 35,000psi.)

$40 a pop and they are rebuildable like the RE Flex joint.......and less noisy :wierd:

I have some 1.5 1/4 (.250) tub laying around from my old CJ coilover setup Get them in 7/8 shank and some 7/8 tube ends for 1.5 OD 1 ID (.250 or 1/4 wall) and build some adjustable arms yourself, CHEAP & STRONG!

Heck.......buy the joints and give them to me and I can build them for you! (That way I do not have to wear earmuffs if I am wheeling with you and that thing. :moon:)

.......if you insist on using heims what size you looking for? I have a bunch of 3/4 ball 3/4 shank laying around collecting dust you could just have. I even have an unwelded tube end 3/4 for 1.5 OD 1 ID (.250 or 1/4 wall)

-RE drop brackets, UCA's, LCA's, coils for 3-4" lift
-Shocks front and rear

....NO your so funny. Just because my replies are multi layer with different subjects mixed into it you have trouble translating now? ......you use to get me before?:D

Your quote above saying you needed UCA & LCA. I will translate my previous reply and simplify;

1.) You should use some of those beefy Flex joints from Ballistic Fab to make some killer LCA for your Comanche. Easy as pie!

2.) I have old links taking up space in my garage. Like to clear some of that stuff out but do not want to throw it away. I have a set already with the sleeve on one end to accept stock XJ/TJ bushings. All you need is to buy 7/8 tube ends along with those Flex joints.

3.) Hell it would take me an hour tops to fab up those arms just bring the joints over I will slap them up for you and you can have those links.

4.) Since you use Heims for everything on the Truggy I got these rod ends just hanging in the bin in the garage. Like to clear it out but don't want to toss them either. You got a use for them, do you want them?

5.) BTW the truggy is incredibly noisy, :listenmus I am giving you grief in jest, ha ha lets all laugh together, ha ha.

6.) Hey thanks for helping and giving me advice when you were busy those times.

Simplified? :gag:  :D

BTW This will be a nice COMANCHE project once completed!

I thought you had a powered antenna, but not fixed? .....fixed is fine. My powered went possessed so I cut the power to it, but it won't stay up now.

Made some more progress with this project today.

Mike (in4aride) hooked me up with my favorite brand of off road tires in the 32" variety on the cheap! (They had to be 'cause I hauled my arse all the way up to Woody Park to get the damn things..... :D)

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1011944.jpg

Then later I got a call back from the owner of these accepting my offer so I brought 'em home as well.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1011945.jpg

This weekend, I tore into the "seized" RE adjustable upper/lower CA's I got from one of FrankZ's buddies and they're no longer seized - just need to order replacement bushings for the ends.

Took a pair of JKS Quicker Disconnects in trade for some parts.

2 weeks ago, I picked up a set of RE drop brackets and some RE 9000's from a CO4x4 guy for a rediculous deal too.

Confirmed with my leaf spring manufacturer that they'll make me a prototype set of MJ rear leafs with the anti-wrap leaf so I can do some R&D on 'em with my rig........

Now I gotta get rid of a couple more parts rigs and a couple "flipper" XJ's and I can get busy putting this thing together.

Hoping to find some 4.5" front coils and an RE HD track bar and bracket in the near future.

Gawd........ I can't seem to stay with one preference here. Part of me wants to build this thing as a "new generation" XJ with the '97+ body/engine/interior updates and keep the '97+ stock bumpers with a Detours Backbone front bumper winch set up....... keep things clean, somewhat stock looking.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/Truck264.jpg

Part of me wants to simply get a '96 Classic parts donor, swap in the Classic interior/dash, HO drivetrain and keep the front clip '96. Then add Bushwackers and my ProtoFab Rocksolid bumper/winch........

I guess I'm struggling with what to do about flares. That beautiful silver MJ has a combo of new/old and I hate that. I also don't really care for the stock older flares in the first place..... For what I'm building this MJ for, Bushwackers seem to be the better choice in my book - and I've always liked the way they look - had 'em on my '91 S-10 years ago too.

A set of 4 TJ rear flares would be another option, but I don't think they'll come down far enough on the rears to make 'em look right and I'm not putting on flares that get trimmed at the upper trim line..... not on this truck anyway.....

I'm going to be putting a lot of detail into this build..... not gonna order it with extra cheeze if you dig what I'm saying.

Pics on ComancheClub.com haven't revealed any other clean/creative flare solution either...... Kinda stuck where these are concerned.

Lots of work into that rig. Not what I'd want to do, but he definitely put tons of labor into it's execution.

I really don't care for the rear...... The tail gate should have been left original - it looks like a Subaru Baja having the hatch graft done to it.

In my head, I thought I'd like the rear bumper ends made to fit - now I know I do not.

Funny how DJ and I were talking about doing the unibody chop and splice just the other day - like this guy did to his. Right down to the cut locations.

I'm leaning toward black wall out because they're muds. I liked the MTR's I put on my white '96 better black out, but I liked the BFG AT's on the black '96 and the silver '00 white out. But don't ask me why tread makes the difference.... I dunno. Maybe because most aggressive treads are seen black out so that you don't white-stripe the sidewalls on the rocks...... :dunno:

If you are going mainly street ride, I'll say white letters out. If it sees much rocks, black walls out.

That's generally been my philosophy too..... The intention of this build is for it to be a cheaper DD alternative to my Dually, but function as a light/moderate trail truck when the Truggy is just overkill (like the organized runs of Spring Creek, Slaughter House, Bill Moore, Left Hand and the like. Something to drive to and from the trail rather than trailering the Truggy around to those runs.

I'm just having a hard time envisioning the white letters WITH the wheels. If I were running black 'crawler wheels, I'd do the white letters without hesitation, but for some reason, part of me thinks the white letters will "clutter" the tire/wheel combination........ Although, IIRC, DJ ran white letters out with his custom wheels and Maxxis muds and I liked the way they looked.

Here's a nice "new gen" MJ. He bought the MJ bed I had for sale - his was fawked up and the previous owner cut the rear fenders WAY goofy. Looks real nice! He came out from South Dakota to get the bed.

He'd done the '99 swap - full interior, dash, console, the works. Turned out awesome! Agate gray too just like I will be doing. He even transferred over the center hand brake, seat floor brackets for the new seats to bolt to, all the HVAC and electrics. Looked totally factory.

Those are 35" tires btw.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1012061.jpg

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1012060.jpg

You can see how the prev. owner made his own custom flares by riveting longer pieces onto the ends. The bottom body of this bed was trimmed off about 3" up on all sides. The cross rails under the bed were all rotten.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1012063.jpg

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1012062.jpg

He had the XJ gas tank temporarilly mounted in the bed, so we had to do some hole cutting and fab work to re-fit the tank in the new bed. While we were working on that, he got a brilliant idea that the gas tank could be recessed in the bed floor using a factory gas tank skid - just like we've seen XJ guys do in the rear of their rigs. This would allow easy access to the fuel pump, and still allow a truck tool box mounted over it. I'll be stealing that idea for mine when it comes time.

But a couple months back, I bought DJ's red '91 2wd 4-banger to tinker with. Thinking I'd hang onto it until I found a low mileage, hard rear hit XJ to transfer the drivetrain and 4wd parts over to it.

The driver's door, driver's fender, cowl panel, header panel, bumper, pass. fender were all mashed up. Had to fix the driver's door striker bolt as it'd cracked and was booger-welded in place. The tires/wheels were assorted sizes and styles, and the interior was just plain gross.

Look familiar Putzer?

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1012237.jpg

Gross interior:

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/P1012229.jpg

I started the "fix up" by changing out the hammered front sheet metal. As luck would have it, I found a guy selling a Colorado Red '91 with a blown engine but a perfect front clip and nice interior..... All parts got swapped. I also spent some time with some suction cups pulling dents. Put a set of nice 235's and matching wheels too.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/100_0108.jpg

Bucket seats, center console...... and carpet in place of the nasty rubber floor.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/100_0110.jpg

That's pretty much how it sits now. It was about to go back to the storage lot to await it's powertrain donor when I got an interesting e-mail last Friday.......

8 months ago, I tried to buy a different MJ but the guy and I couldn't agree on a price..... I figured it'd sold a long time ago. He and I bought/sold parts to each other on and off since then - pretty neat 'ol guy. Well, he'd just had his 70th birthday Friday and decided he needed to give up on all his MJ projects and get serious about retiring. He offered me the MJ I'd tried to buy, another wrecked '88 long bed and a '91 XJ for one helluva package deal. He said I wouldn't be able to refuse it - he was correct...... :D

So, I now have a super straight, rust-free '91 short bed MJ with a 4.0 HO, auto, 4x4 that has the factory bucket seat interior. It's even got factory front/t-case/gas skids! He said the motor had a bad rod knock. To me it didn't sound like a rod - I did some investigating today and found all 4 torque converter bolts were very loose. I tightened them down - it quieted the noise down a lot, but I think the flexplate may also be cracked and possibly the trans oil pump is grinding away. But the engine runs like a champ..... even with 200K on the odometer...... Laying under it, I could only find two places where something had hit the t-case skid and one of the rear leaf spring mounts. I don't think this MJ saw anything but street use for the most part.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/100_0060.jpg

I really wish the previous owner hadn't spray-bombed it with flat black, but at least it was black originally. It'll look REAL good with minor body work and fresh black paint........ :D

The interior is actually pretty decent considering - and it's all there, nothing busted or missing.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/100_0077.jpg

So, I guess I'll look for a good transmission/converter/flexplate to swap in and then start from there.......

In the meantime....... gotta sell the red '91.......

Just posting this so I can keep track of my "ideas" for the new MJ.....

Hoping to keep the MJ build simple. Pre-runner bumpers, 4" lift max, 32's, clean painted body - possibly some checkered flag graphic along the bottom with hints of yellow...... Dunno if I'll drop the coin on pre-runner fenders..... the body is too clean for that..... I've already got the 32" tires, front lift, drop brackets, D44 rear, replacement transmission, rear leaf packs, exhaust, might put the Currie Correct Link steering from the '97 on it, minor replacement bits/pieces.....

I just need some killer wheels (15x8 Outlaw II's or???), RE rubber bushings for the CA's, shocks, windshield, dash (severely cracked), '97+ front clip (maybe.....) and we'll see where it goes from there..... :D

I know, I know........

I went to go look at a '99 S-10 Extreme a guy had advertised for $1800 and "It just quit running, I'm no mechanic and I just want it gone". At first sounded like it could have been a crapped out alternator or other sensor anomaly, but putting a wrench on the crank yielded no turn....... and the radiator was packed with stop-leak goo...... no bueno. There were LOTS of other issues including an out of state title NOT in his name....

He had moved a few cars from his driveway to get to the Extreme truck and parked 'em around the corner from his house. When I went to leave with what I thought would be yet another empty trailer drive home........ I see that MJ parked with the other cars. I call him back and ask him if he knows who owns it...... "Yeah, that's my dad's".

Dad turns out to be the original owner. Good maintenance history, and he wasn't real sure he wanted to part with it...... but he did. 230K miles on that MJ....... but it seems to run/drive real nice considering. Super clean engine compartment and an incredibly straight body.

I just couldn't say no to another MJ........

I'm not attached to it yet............ anyone wanna buy it?

But yeah, I was thinking of just a new gen front clip with the spoiler/fog light bumper, new gen mirrors and maybe some 18's then see about a 2" drop or so...... or that could be someone else's project..... :dunno:

I still wanna get a certain Sonoma..... but the fawker won't sell it until he's researched what kind of car to get and then go buy it...... in a few weeks....... gawd.

You know what I paid for it....... sweeten the deal with a couple Benjamins for my time and tow......

My wife looked at it and walked away shaking her head........ I said "Whassa matter?" She just laughed, called me a retard and reminded me that I bought a DD fixer that has no A/C....... Ugh, she's right. Driving to/from work in the summer wearing 18 ply Kevlar and tight-knit polyester and wool makes me pretty damn cranky when there's no A/C..... She also reminded me that I traded in my last Dodge truck partly because the A/C wasn't working........

Someone save me from myself and buy this gem of an MJ.......

Seriously, you guys should see the door jambs and under the hood....... Crazy. When's the last time you saw an '88 XJ/MJ that was still running the OEM radiator with an undamaged fan shroud and aux. fan? The heat riser tubing is still intact on this old girl........ The weight distribution brake control valve and arm are still in good working order....... All with 230K on the clock...... Bonkers, just bonkers.

I saw and 88 MJ 1 ton, auto, 8' bed for sale in Moab at the Easter Safari. New rad, alternator, water pump, injectors, plus more (list). DANA 35 front (I check it out twice) DANA 60 rear. 183K rod knock and head off. The only rust was on the bed runners. Good clean seats and interior. Asking $800.

Bagged suspension = ability to change ride height and quality.

I don't wanna hear any crying about having a bagged suspension...... :moon:

Besides, this is fawkin' rediculous. Who WOULD wanna ride around like this.......

http://www.s10forum.com/classifieds/data/29/tiny_s10.jpg

I drove the Sonoma I really want and that was around a few blocks in an Englewood neighborhood complete with drainage dips, potholes, cracks and raised asphalt patchwork. It rode surprisingly smooth and absorbed all of it amazingly. Suspension done right will work appropriately. This one had dropped spindles up front, not bagged or cut coils. I believe it was a 3.5" front drop and a 2.5" drop rear. If I were to go that route, I'd keep the drop to 2" front and rear and obtain the rake using larger balonies on the rear.

The issue with dropping an MJ is the axle tube clearance to the oil pan and the upper control arms. To get REAL low like an S-10 can, you'd need to lower the UCA mounts and the LCA mounts on the axle tube, and notch the top half of the tube to get enough clearance and reasonably correct geometry to make it streetable.

Kiefer had mentioned doing something like factory Mopar 18's (ala Charger) and a 2" drop. Clean.

ok, red, and chrome, come on now, again, you found the worst example ever. im talkin single cab, all black, flat black 18's. mine sat a tiny bit lower than that, literally millimeters above laying frame. i drove it cuz i was in vegas where 4wd was stupid, roads were great, was easy to pick up girls in, and was 19 and needed to blow money on something.... LOL

ya, you can change ride height, but when you drop it that low, depending on the size bags you are running, you cant lift if very high. mine fully aired up was lower than stock. i had about the clearance of one of those stupid "xtreme" edition s-10's. would still suck out here

My 98 S-10 had a BellTech drop on it. 2" spindles up front and 3" springs out back. This allowed it to sit level and it actually rode very well. After that I dropped it another 2" front and rear using springs and blocks. It didn't ride as nice after that.

Agreed on the 2.8.

Red interior is nasty, but you can switch that out and paint the MJ specific panels to match.

I actually prefer the longbed, but thats me.

But, you do have to admit it is a very nice clean rig for the age and price, if it was an 87 it would be 4L/AW4, and would be a very nice jeep for the price.

Looks like a guy on the MJ forum got it, said he got it for a steal, which probably means less than $1000. Not bad if you ask me, and a good solid truck to start with.

My 98 S-10 had the 2.2L 4cyl and a 5spd manual. It also got 25mpg but was gutless on the pass and had a stupid speed limiter set at 93mph. I liked the interior and body lines a lot, but the engine was crap.

Don't recall it was along time ago. single cab long bed loved that truck It got ok milage but it also had over 300k miles on it. It was good hwy ok city milage wise. in the mts when not hauling much it was fine, but toss in the quad and camping gear and it chugged a bit but always did the job. had to put her down after she lost compression on #5 and took a quart of oil every time i filled her up and the fire in the dash and and and and. BUT I've never had another truck car or SUV get 300k on it like she did.

DutchVDub
May 11th, 2011, 06:12
Yeah, mine had well over 200,000 miles on it as well. I never did hit the 300,000 mark though.

Well, so far, unless I'm willing to spend $4K for a "quality" S-10/Sonoma all I'm finding in my price range is either absolute junk with LONG lists of "needs work", "nice trucks" with owners who have been smoking whacky weed and could look at one sitting at a salvage yard and consider it nice, or owners that apparently don't really want to sell even when you have cash in hand......

So, I'm beginning to think I should just keep this MJ and drive it. I posted a thread over in OEM with questions about converting non-A/C to A/C.......

As it looks as though I'll be keeping this MJ...... I'd been toying with the idea of lowering the suspension.......

I don't think this is the way I'll go about doing it though......... :nono:

Would you believe that set up is going on an MJ doing land speed record racing on the Bonneville salt flats at over 150 mph? No thanks.

So, are you driving it now?

YELLAHEEP

So, are you driving it now?

Not yet. Bought it from the orig. owner who couldn't find the title. He had to get a duplicate and mailed it Saturday so I should have the title today or tomorrow....... then I gotta see if that 230K mile Renix will pass emissions...... it's been an El Paso County registered vehicle all it's life....... hell, I haven't even checked to see if it's got a cat.......

Then I gotta bolt on the Icons and tires I had on the 5.9 - the "Comanche" tires on it now are old and dry rotted.

Gotta fix an oil hemorrage at the oil filter adaptor..... it drips like a leaky faucett.

The expansion tank needs replaced as it's cracked and leaking.

Might need new rear brake pads too - heard some grinding the other day when I drove it around the block a couple times.

When all that's done, I can drive it....... I think....... :D

Hmmmmm....... Ya learn something new every day.......

Icon wheels don't fit on an early 2wd MJ....... The spindle style front knuckle puts the bearing dust cap too far out for the wheel to bolt on..... unless you remove the little center cap from the wheel....... :laugh3:

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/100_0974.jpg

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h164/TBetka/100_0973.jpg

I suppose if I were to get some new dust caps and paint them a similar color as the wheels, it wouldn't be real noticible, but the dust caps do stick out a little farther than the regular center caps.

I have a feeling I'd have this problem with pretty much any of the late model XJ wheels..... I'm still kicking around the idea of putting some 18" Charger wheels on it....

As the week progresses, I will be installing new door speakers, '96 Sport door panels and handles/cranks, new door lock cylinders (hoping to find new ones at the parts store), and deal with this ....... :puke: ......... mess.

It's an illness I have....... I can't bear to see the thing NOT get fixed up. The longer I have it, the more will get done to it....... but the price will reflect that to some degree.

I may keep it for a while...... but it'll definitely be for sale the entire time. Plus, the jack-hole that has the Sonoma I want keeps dicking around about when he can sell it..... so for now..... I just keep on the stupid path I'm on..... throwing money at something I'll end up selling..... :looney:

So..... if someone wants it, buy it NOW before I end up restoring the damn thing completely and ask $10K for it.......

I'd love to buy it, but with the plane ticket and 1000 mile drive, I think it makes more sense to keep looking locally. Doubt I could find one that clean though.

Save the plane ticket and the drive...... have it shipped. The other MJ I sold was bought by a guy from a little town in southern Arizona. Cost just under $500. Said it would have been a little cheaper if the guy lived along a common route.

But...... I DO have the opportunity to actually do a new-gen cosmetic update to this one.

I'll be using this '98 XJ as the donor since it's got the right color parts in good useable shape. Found a better black header panel (Thanks Trent!) to use for the swap and I believe I have a pair of manual window assemblies to put into the doors..... At this point, I'm not gonna get into a full late model interior swap.
